Mapping Emotion Regulation Patterns Within the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders Personality Traits.

Personality pathology is associated with emotional problems that are potentially attributable to problematic emotion regulation strategy patterns. We evaluated the emotion regulation strategies associated with the pathological personality traits in the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). A total of 504 participants completed measures of AMPD traits and strategy usage, which were analyzed using hierarchical regressions and latent profile analysis (LPA). Regression results demonstrated that each trait was associated with a unique strategy pattern: negative affect with emotional ov

Advancing understanding of the relation between criterion a of the alternative model for personality disorders and hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology: Insights from an external validity analysis.

Increasing interest surrounds the relation between Level of Personality Functioning (LPF), as defined by Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, and the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) model. However, the integration of LPF within HiTOP remains unclear. Using bivariate correlation and linear regression analyses, this study assessed the associations between LPF and HiTOP spectra (externalizing antisocial, externalizing drug use, internalizing, antagonism, detachment, and psychoticism). A sample of 1,183 participants (46.2% female, Mage = 31.3 ± 14.8 year

Glioma induces atypical depression-like behaviors in mice through the 5-HT and glutamatergic synapse pathways.

Glioma patients often undertake psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. There are several clinical epidemiological studies on glioma-associated depression, but basic research and corresponding animal experiments are still lacking. Here, we observed that glioma-bearing mice exhibited atypical depression-like behaviors in orthotopic glioma mouse models. The concentrations of monoamine neurotransmitters were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), revealing a decrease in 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) levels in para-glioma tissues. The related gene expression levels also

Kefir recovered depressive-like behaviour in CantonS lineage of Drosophila melanogaster exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress protocol.

Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) is a widely accepted method for inducing depressive-like states in animal models. We decided to explore the effects of CUMS on the CantonS lineage of Drosophila melanogaster, which differs from the OregonR lineage in various ways. Additionally, we wanted to investigate the potential benefits of kefir in treating these chronically stressed flies, as previous research has shown promising results in using kefir components for depression treatment. To begin, we exposed male CantonS flies to a 10-day CUMS protocol and compared them to non-stressed flies. Wit

Emotions in social anxiety disorder: A review.

Extant cognitive behavioral models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) have primarily focused on cognitions and behaviors that maintain the disorder. Emotional aspects of SAD have been investigated but have not been sufficiently integrated into current models. To facilitate such integration, we reviewed the literature on emotional constructs (emotional intelligence, emotional knowledge, emotional clarity, emotion differentiation, and emotion regulation), and discrete emotions (anger, shame, embarrassment, loneliness, guilt, pride, and envy) in SAD and social anxiety. We present the studies conduc

Altered Fear Behavior in Aeroallergen House Dust Mite Exposed C57Bl/6 Mice: A Model of Th2-skewed Airway Inflammation.

There is a growing interest for studying the impact of chronic inflammation, particularly lung inflammation, on the brain and behavior. This includes asthma, a chronic inflammatory condition, that has been associated with psychiatric conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although asthma is driven by elevated production of Th2 cytokines (IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13), which drive asthma symptomology, recent work demonstrates that concomitant Th1 or Th17 cytokine production can worsen asthma severity. We previously demonstrated a detrimental link between PTSD-relevant fear behavior an

Preclinical evidence evaluation of Xiaoyao san in treating chronic unpredictable mild stress model of depression based on meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In view of the current challenges in the treatment of depression, in order to improve the efficacy and avoid adverse reactions, people pay attention to the treatment of traditional Chinese medicine. Xiaoyao san is a classic prescription commonly used in the treatment of depression, with the role of harmonizing liver and spleen, and shows great potential in the treatment of depression. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and specific mechanism of Xiaoyao san in the treatment of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model of depression t

Children of Mentally Ill Parents - A High Risk Population.

The scientific and clinical interest in children with mentally ill parents increased in the last years. Those children belong to a high risk population so that prevention is urgently indicated. Due to genetic influences and partly to an impairment of the parent-child interaction because of the parent's illness there exists a higher risk for child abuse. They show a three to five time increased risk to develop mental problems which require treatment over the course of their lives. They show abnormalities in social, cognitive and emotional areas. Untreated mental disorders and associated behavio

Subtly encouraging more deliberate decisions: using a forcing technique and population stereotype to investigate free will.

Magicians' forcing techniques allow them to covertly influence spectators' choices. We used a type of force (Position Force) to investigate whether explicitly informing people that they are making a decision results in more deliberate decisions. The magician placed four face-down cards on the table in a horizontal row, after which the spectator was asked to select a card by pushing it forward. According to magicians and position effects literature, people should be more likely to choose a card in the third position from their left, because it can be easily reached. We manipulated whether parti

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound ameliorates depression-like behaviors in a rat model of chronic unpredictable stress.

INTRODUCTION: There is an unmet need for better nonpharmaceutical treatments for depression. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a novel type of neuromodulation that could be helpful for depressed patients. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to investigate the feasibility and potential mechanisms of LIPUS in the treatment of depression. METHODS: Chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) was used to generate rats with depression-like features that were treated with four weeks of LIPUS stimulation of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Depression-like behaviors were assessed with the sucros

Illness perceptions in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder; A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a serious mental health problem that causes significant impairment and reduced quality of life. Though some substantially benefit from psychological therapies, a substantial proportion of people with OCD disengage from treatment or fail to benefit. Theoretical models such as the Common-Sense Model posit that our management of physical illness depends on our perceptions about the condition. Identifying how people with OCD perceive their condition could lead to important insight that would improve treatment of OCD. OBJECTIVES: To identify and c

Profiles of primary and secondary callous-unemotional features in youth: The role of emotion regulation.

There is increasing evidence for multiple pathways in the development of callous-unemotional (CU) features, including primary and secondary profiles. Understanding affect regulation strategies among variants may provide further insight to the development and treatment of CU features. This study evaluated whether profiles of CU features could be identified within a clinical sample of youth using measures of affect dysregulation, affect suppression, anxiety, and maltreatment. We also examined whether these profiles were consistent across gender. Participants (N = 418; 56.7% female) ranged in age

The behavioral phenotype of early life adversity: A 3-level meta-analysis of rodent studies.

Altered cognitive performance is considered an intermediate phenotype mediating early life adversity (ELA) effects on later-life development of mental disorders, e.g. depression. Whereas most human studies are limited to correlational conclusions, rodent studies can prospectively investigate how ELA alters cognitive performance in several domains. Despite the volume of reports, there is no consensus on i) the behavioral domains being affected by ELA and ii) the extent of these effects. To test how ELA (here: aberrant maternal care) affects specific behavioral domains, we used a 3-level mixed-e

An integrative memory model of recollection and familiarity to understand memory deficits.

Humans can recollect past events in details (recollection) and/or know that an object, person, or place has been encountered before (familiarity). During the last two decades, there has been intense debate about how recollection and familiarity are organized in the brain. Here, we propose an integrative memory model which describes the distributed and interactive neurocognitive architecture of representations and operations underlying recollection and familiarity. In this architecture, the subjective experience of recollection and familiarity arises from the interaction between core systems (s

An emotional modulation model as signature for the identification of children developmental disorders.

In recent years, applications like Apple's Siri or Microsoft's Cortana have created the illusion that one can actually "chat" with a machine. However, a perfectly natural human-machine interaction is far from real as none of these tools can empathize. This issue has raised an increasing interest in speech emotion recognition systems, as the possibility to detect the emotional state of the speaker. This possibility seems relevant to a broad number of domains, ranging from man-machine interfaces to those of diagnostics. With this in mind, in the present work, we explored the possibility of apply

Let's Open the Decision-Making Umbrella: A Framework for Conceptualizing and Assessing Features of Impaired Decision Making in Addiction.

Decision-making impairments play a pivotal role in the emergence and maintenance of addictive disorders. However, a sound conceptualization of decision making as an umbrella construct, encompassing its cognitive, affective, motivational, and physiological subcomponents, is still lacking. This prevents an efficient evaluation of the heterogeneity of decision-making impairments and the development of tailored treatment. This paper thus unfolds the various processes involved in decision making by adopting a critical approach of prominent dual- or triadic-process models, which postulate that decis

Processes and pathways mediating the experience of social anxiety and negative rumination.

Negative rumination in social anxiety disorder (SAD) occurs in anticipation of a social event (pre-event rumination) and in its aftermath (post-event rumination). Both are proposed to be key maintaining factors of the vicious cycle of social anxiety. Despite this, there is a dearth of research investigating the processes that mediate the relationship between social anxiety and pre-event rumination and uncertainty regarding the cognitive and attentional processes that mediate the relationship between social anxiety and post-event rumination. To investigate this further, the current study utilis

Dispositional free riders do not free ride on punishment.

Strong reciprocity explains prosocial cooperation by the presence of individuals who incur costs to help those who helped them ('strong positive reciprocity') and to punish those who wronged them ('strong negative reciprocity'). Theories of social preferences predict that in contrast to 'strong reciprocators', self-regarding people cooperate and punish only if there are sufficient future benefits. Here, we test this prediction in a two-stage design. First, participants are classified according to their disposition towards strong positive reciprocity as either dispositional conditional cooperat

Factor structure and clinical correlates of the 61-item Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS).

The objective of this study was to assess the factor structure and clinical correlates of a 61-item version of the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS), a self-report retrospective measure of childhood problems, experiences, and behavior used in ADHD assessment. Given the currently mostly widely used form of the WURS was derived via a criterion-keyed approach, the study aimed to use latent variable modeling of the 61-item WURS to potentially identify more and more homogeneous set of items reflecting current conceptualizations of ADHD symptoms. Exploratory structural equation modeling was used to ge

Integrating self-determination theory and the theory of planned behaviour to predict intention to donate blood.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this research was to test a model integrating self-determination theory (SDT) and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to predict intention to donate blood. BACKGROUND: Social science research suggests that motivational orientations outlined by SDT can be usefully integrated with constructs from the TPB to collectively predict intention and behaviour. Such analysis has not yet been undertaken in the context of blood donation. METHODS: A total of 458 currently eligible donors completed measures of blood donor motivations, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behaviou
