We report on monitoring oxygen saturation with a jugular bulb fiber-optical catheter in an 18-month-old girl after fresh water near-drowning followed by acute respiratory failure. The first measured cerebral oxygen saturation was 22% despite normal values for arterial and central venous oxygen saturation. After conventional therapy had failed to improve cerebral oxygen saturation, we started veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pertinence of pH studies for persistent ear, nose, and throat (ENT) symptoms and their eventual relationship to gastroesophageal reflux (GER).
METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed of age, reason for referral, pH study, treatment, and follow-up of patients with ENT symptoms suspected to have GER.

We serially measured the proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the urine of intraoperative patients over time to assess their potential use for rapid multicomponent analysis of cellular metabolites. Although atypical chest pain has been well described in the Western population, its frequency in Chinese is unknown. Over a period of 42 months, we studied 521 Chinese patients with chest pain and identified 108 patients (20.7%) whose pain was not related to cardiac causes, as determined by exercise ECG or cardiac catheterization.
