The electrical current exclusion (ECE) principle provides an alternative to common methods of cell diameter measurement and especially in atrophy and cancer associated cachexia research. C2C12 myoblasts were differentiated into myotubes and treated with 100 μM dexamethasone to induce atrophy in vitro. Subsequently, they were incubated for 24 h with media containing different concentrations of curcumin and/or branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in order to counteract atrophy. After treatment with curcumin, an increase in cell diameter was detectable; the highest increase with 13.9 ± 0.4% was see

CONCLUSION: Bortezomib was effective in attenuating atrophy of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle, but not the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle. This was probably due to differences in the fiber composition of the two muscles. The PCA muscle is composed of a combination of fast- and slow-twitch fibers, and therefore is more resistant to atrophy than the TA muscle, which is composed solely of fast-twitch fibers.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the preventive effects of bortezomib on denervation-induced atrophy of the TA and PCA muscles in the rat.
METHODS: Following transection of the left recurr

INTRODUCTION: The assumption that multiple sclerosis (MS) is purely a white matter disease has been challenged in recent years by observations of axonal damage and neuronal loss in gray matter of the cortex, subcortex, and spinal cord.
METHODS: We report the case of a 71-year-old man with primary progressive MS and longstanding right arm weakness who presented with intermittent right arm pain.
RESULTS: Neurological examination showed atrophy, weakness, and hyporeflexia, and electromyography (EMG) showed acute and chronic partial denervation in multiple segments of the right arm. Magnetic res

In patients with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis, deterioration of body composition (changes in bone, fat and muscle mass) is associated with increased risk for diseases such as coronary artery heart disease, non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, lipid metabolism abnormalities, and osteoporotic fractures in these patients. Immobility leads to a changing pattern of loading in the paralyzed areas, and secondary alteration in structure. However, bone and soft tissue changes in these patients are usually neglected. The purpose of this article is to update on the pathophysiological mec

There is currently no direct, facile method to determine total-body skeletal muscle mass for the diagnosis and treatment of skeletal muscle wasting conditions such as sarcopenia, cachexia, and disuse. We tested in rats the hypothesis that the enrichment of creatinine-(methyl-d(3)) (D(3)-creatinine) in urine after a defined oral tracer dose of D(3)-creatine can be used to determine creatine pool size and skeletal muscle mass. We determined 1) an oral tracer dose of D(3)-creatine that was completely bioavailable with minimal urinary spillage and sufficient enrichment in the body creatine pool fo

BACKGROUND: Hirayama disease is a rare disease characterized by juvenile-onset of asymmetric amyotrophy, of which etiology has not been clarified. The aim of our study was to investigate the clinical and neurophysiologic characteristics of Hirayama disease.
METHODS: Neurophysiological tests, including nerve conduction studies (NCS), F-wave and routine electromyography (EMG), were performed in seventy-three patients with Hirayama disease. EMG was selectively performed on upper and lower extremities, sternocleidomast and thoracic paravertebral muscles according to the clinical features of the p

Pure trigeminal motor neuropathy is a very unusual disease that is characterized by trigeminal motor paralysis without trigeminal sensory disturbances and without the involvement of the other cranial nerves. We report a case of pure trigeminal motor neuropathy in a 70-year-old woman. The diagnosis was based on the results of clinical, electromyographic, and radiologic examinations. Only the motor branch of the left trigeminal nerve was damaged. Atrophy of the left-side masticatory muscles and jaw resulted in facial asymmetry. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head and face did not detect

Conditions affecting the brachial plexus and its branches can cause lameness and/or neurological deficits. There are few reports of schwannomas in cats. In reported cases, the tumours arose from the dermis or subcutis of the limbs, head and neck and thorax, but there are no reports of primary tumours that arose from the brachial plexus itself. The purpose of this study is to present the clinical, radiological, ultrasonographical and pathological findings of primary brachial plexus tumour in three cats.

INTRODUCTION: Distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN), also known as spinal muscular atrophy, represents a group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous diseases caused by degenerations of spinal motor neurons and leading to distal muscle weakness and wasting. Nerve conduction studies reveal a pure motor axonopathy and needle examination shows chronic denervation.
STATE OF ART: dHMN were initially subdivided into seven subtypes according to mode of inheritance, age at onset, and clinical evolution. Recent studies have shown that these subtypes are still heterogeneous at the molecular ge…

Hirayama disease is a myelopathy related to flexion movements of the neck that produce ischemic damage in the anterior horn of the cervical cord. The disease affects young people and is characterized by a distal upper extremity deficit that develops gradually. The diagnosis is confirmed by cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in flexion demonstrating a forward shift of the posterior dural sac and spinal cord compression. On radiology, there should be suggestive signs in neutral position such as cord atrophy, intramedullary bilateral high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, straighteni

Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE), in most cases, presents with cardiac and dermatological manifestation due to transferred IgG auto antibodies (anti Ro/SSA and anti La/SSB) from the mother. Some unusual associations with myelopathy, vasculopathy, transient myasthenia gravis, congenital nephrotic syndrome, chondrodysplasia punctata etc. are also reported. Here, the authors present a case of NLE with isolated left sided pectoralis major muscle atrophy, which has not been reported earlier.

The authors report on 2 young patients who developed drug-resistant idiopathic dystonic camptocormia (bent spine) and were treated successfully by deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus (GPi). The first patient, a 26-year-old woman, suffered for 3 years from such severe camptocormia that she became unable to walk and was confined to bed or a wheelchair. The second patient, a 21-year-old man, suffered for 6 months from less severe camptocormia; he was able to walk but only for short distances with a very bent spine, the arms in a parallel position to the legs, and the hand

Hourglass-like constriction has been previously associated with the main trunk of the radial nerve, with its branch of the posterior interosseous nerve, as well as the anterior interosseous nerve, a branch of the median and axillary nerve. Here, we report a case of hourglass-like constriction of the musculocutaneous nerve lesion that showed no recognizable compressive structure.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by a polyglutamine stretch in the huntingtin protein. Today, more than 15 years after the genetic defect underlying HD was discovered, the pathogenesis is still not well understood and there is no adequate treatment. Research into this disorder has conventionally focused on neurological symptoms and brain pathology, particularly neurodegeneration in the basal ganglia and cerebral cortex. Mutant huntingtin is, however, ubiquitously expressed throughout the body. Indeed, contrary to earlier thinking, HD is associated wit
