Abuse and Neglect of Children With Specific Learning Disorders in Türkiye: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Although it is often stated that children with special needs are at risk of being abused and neglected, research conducted on the abuse of children with specific learning disorders (SLDs) is limited. METHODS: This case-control study aims to compare exposure to neglect and abuse among children diagnosed with SLDs (case group) and children with typical development (control group). The study included children aged 6 to 12 years who were referred to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic and Pediatric Clinic of a hospital in Türkiye. The data collection process included

Validation of a screening test based on symbols visual search to detect visuo-attentionnal reading difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: Visuo-attentional dyslexia has been associated with impaired simultaneous visual processing of multiple items made of separable features (i.e. symbols). We designed a visual search screening test, consisting to find the (unique) black circle among circles of various colours versus among circles combined with a bar of various length and location. We evaluated its reliability and its validity to detect visuo-attentional deficit prone to affect reading. RESULTS OF STUDY 1: Assessment of 2015 children between 3 and 11 years old established that the screening test was feasible from kinde

Navigating the complexity of pain in psoriatic arthritis and axial spondyloarthritis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pain is the most common and often most troublesome feature of chronic autoimmune diseases such as psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA). A predominant concept is that the main source of pain is from disease-induced tissue inflammation and structural damage, activating peripheral nerve fibers which relay to the central nervous system. This mechanism is nociceptive pain and the presumption has been that controlling inflammation will be sufficient to reduce this form of pain. However, despite control of inflammation, patients may still have significant r

User-centred design, validation and clinical testing of an anti-choking mug for people with Parkinson's disease.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia, or difficulty initiating swallowing, is a frequent problem in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and can lead to aspiration pneumonia. The efficacy of pharmacological options is limited. Postural strategies, such as a chin-down manoeuvre when drinking, have had some degree of success but may be difficult for people who have other limitations such as dementia or neck rigidity, to reproduce consistently. Using a user-centred design approach and a multidisciplinary team, we developed and tested an anti-choking mug for people with PD that helps angle the head in the opti

Sexual Self in Disquiet - Gender Incongruence in ICD-11 The ICD-11 represents a shift in the clinical conceptualization and diagnostic assessment of variant gender identity developments. The revised approach to describing individuals whose gender identity does not align with their natal sex is reflected in the departure from the previous pathogenetic understanding and is demonstrated by the introduction of the diagnosis of "gender incongruence" as a "condition related to sexual health". In this article, the diagnostic and theoretical revisions in the ICD-11 are discussed in the context of prev

Fluid resuscitation in patients with cirrhosis and sepsis: A multidisciplinary perspective.

Fluid resuscitation is typically needed in patients with cirrhosis, sepsis and hypotension. However, the complex circulatory changes associated with cirrhosis and the hyperdynamic state, characterised by increased splanchnic blood volume and relative central hypovolemia, complicate fluid administration and monitoring of fluid status. Patients with advanced cirrhosis require larger volumes of fluids to expand central blood volume and improve sepsis-induced organ hypoperfusion than patients without cirrhosis, which comes at the cost of a further increase in non-central blood volume. Monitoring t

How Do We Keep our Heads above Water? An Embedded Mixed-Methods Study Exploring Implementation of a Workplace Reintegration Program for Nurses Affected by Operational Stress Injury.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events which can lead to operational stress injuries (OSI). Workplace reintegration after an OSI can be challenging, especially with repeated exposure to potentially traumatic scenarios and workplace demands. A workplace reintegration program (RP) originally developed for police officers may be of benefit for nurses returning to work after an OSI. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceived need for an RP for nurses, and its potential contextualization and implementation in the nursing context using an implem

A systematic literature review of economic evaluations and cost-of-illness studies of inherited cardiomyopathies.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are commonly inherited heart conditions associated with a high risk of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. To understand the economic and societal disease burden, this study systematically identified and reviewed cost-of-illness (COI) studies and economic evaluations (EEs) of various interventions for HCM and DCM. A literature search was performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, NHS EED, EconLit and Web of Science to identify COI studies and EEs published between 1 January 2010 and 28 April 2021. The selection of studies and their crit

Treatable traits models of care.

Treatable traits is a personalized approach to the management of respiratory disease. The approach involves a multidimensional assessment to understand the traits present in individual patients. Traits are phenotypic and endotypic characteristics that can be identified, are clinically relevant and can be successfully treated by therapy to improve clinical outcomes. Identification of traits is followed by individualized and targeted treatment to those traits. First proposed for the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) the approach is recommended in many other ar

Tobacco treatment specialists' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about lung cancer screening: Potential piece of the puzzle for increasing lung cancer screening awareness.

OBJECTIVES: Less than 5% of eligible U.S. individuals undergo lung cancer screening (LCS). A significant barrier is lack of awareness; more effective outreach and education strategies are needed to achieve greater population LCS uptake. Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTSs) are an untapped resource to assist and understanding TTS knowledge and perspectives about LCS and readiness and capacity to assist is a critical first step. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study design was conducted to understand LCS knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices of TTSs. A cross-sectional sur

Caring for people in prison with palliative and end-of-life care needs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prison population is growing and ageing, and many people will die from natural causes while incarcerated. This article provides a contemporary review of key issues related to palliative and end-of-life care in prisons. RECENT FINDINGS: Few countries have integrated prison hospices. Palliative care needs may go unrecognised in prison. Older offenders may not trust the prison to care for them and may benefit from segregation. Cancer remains a major cause of death. Training staff remains a priority, and technology can help facilitate this. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COV

Pain in People Experiencing Homelessness: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Prior work suggests that people experiencing homelessness (PEH) are at heightened risk for developing pain and have a uniquely burdensome pain experience. PURPOSE: The aim of this scoping review was to map the current peer-reviewed, published literature on the pain experience of PEH. METHODS: In accordance with the US Annual Homeless Assessment Report, we defined homelessness as lacking shelter or a fixed address within the last year. We conceptualized the pain experience via a modified version of the Social Communication Model of Pain, which considers patient, provider, and cont
