Face recognition is a highly developed and efficient human function that involves multiple neural networks. A main pathway links the occipital cortex, where an occipital face area (OFA) has been identified, to a fusiform face area (FFA) in the fusiform gyrus, which plays a critical role in face recognition. This core pathway deals with invariant aspects of the face. Another pathway, including the superior temporal sulcus, is involved in the perception of more changeable aspects of the face such as gaze orientation, face expression and lip movements. It has been defined by some authors as a "th

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway disruption causes craniofacial malformations including orofacial clefts (OFCs) of the lip and palate. In normal craniofacial morphogenesis, Shh signals to multipotent cranial neural crest cells (cNCCs) and was recently discovered to regulate the angiogenic transcriptome, including expression markers of perivascular cells and pericytes. The mural cells of microvasculature, pericytes in the brain and face differentiate from cNCCs, but their role in facial development is not known. Here, we examined microvascular morphogenesis in a mouse model of Shh pathway antagonis

Persistent cough following catheter ablation for atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) is not a recognized complication. We report the case of an 81-year-old man who developed a persistent, speech-triggered dry cough beginning the day after successful slow pathway ablation. The cough was reproducibly provoked by phonation, absent during sleep, and persisted despite an unrevealing cardiopulmonary and inflammatory evaluation. To our knowledge, this phenotype has not been previously described following slow pathway ablation for AVNRT. Unlike post-ablation cough reported in left atr

The spleen's complex structure and limited regenerative ability hinder its regrowth at the site of injure, affecting patient quality of life and risk severe complications. The spleen's stroma primarily consists of reticular and fibrillar collagen, supporting its microvascular network. Inspired by such biophysical environment, this work develops an inducible scaffold featuring an interpenetrating network structure of fibrous and reticular collagen, which is loaded with vascular endothelial cell membranes to facilitate in situ regeneration. The regenerated parenchyma includes red pulp, white pul

The subiculum (SUB) is a major hippocampal output hub that routes information to cortical and subcortical targets, and its long-range projections are considered excitatory. Using enhancer-driven adeno-associated viral vectors to selectively label γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-releasing neurons across species, here we show that the dorsal SUB also sends an inhibitory projection to the dorsal part of the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) in mice and rats. Anterograde tracing in mice revealed that the dorsal SUB contains GABAergic neurons that project sparsely to all layers of the dorsal MEC with enric

INTRODUCTION: Excessive online gaming (EOG) is a transitional stage between recreational gaming and internet gaming disorder (IGD), characterized by impaired self-control and escalating engagement. Early identification of neural and behavioral vulnerabilities is crucial for understanding IGD development.
METHODS: Fifty-nine young adults (30 EOG, 29 controls) completed structural MRI and behavioral assessments, including the IGD Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF) and the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). Source-based morphometry (SBM) identified independent gray matter networks, while behavioral

Gene essentiality, the requirement of a gene for survival or proliferation, is central to understanding cellular processes and identifying drug targets. Experimental determination requires large growth screens that are time-consuming and expensive, motivating in silico approaches. Existing methods predominantly use flux balance analysis (FBA), a constraint-based optimisation framework that requires a predefined cellular objective function. This can introduce observer bias, because the objective often reflects the researcher's assumptions rather than the cell's biological goals. Here, we presen

BACKGROUND: White matter (WM) tract involvement represents a critical determinant of functional outcome in neuro-oncology. Although substantial advances in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and intraoperative mapping have improved characterization of WM organization, the relationship between microstructural integrity and morphometric alterations of associative fasciculi in different tumor histotypes remains incompletely understood. We investigated the association between fractional anisotropy (FA), volumetric and length parameters of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) and arcuate fas

OBJECTIVE: Theory of mind (ToM) is a central pillar of social cognition and crucial for effective social interactions. Impairment in ToM is a major predictor of global functioning in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD). Based on the hypothesis that subcortical and reward circuit functional connectivity is distinct in SCZ and BPD and can be better revealed using ToM task-based approaches, we tested whether functional connectivity patterns of cortico-subcortical networks are a discriminative feature of these disorders.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study (n = 60) to investi

INTRODUCTION: Emerging evidence positions post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a disease fundamentally involving disturbances in whole-brain network coordination. Nonetheless, comprehensive studies systematically integrating time-invariant connectivity metrics with time-resolved dynamic assessments remain limited.
METHOD: This case-control investigation enrolled 33 PTSD patients and 33 healthy controls who completed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and cognitive assessment using the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III. We evaluated static connectivity via functional

Although prior research has demonstrated enhanced striatal response when sharing rewards with close social connections, less is known about how individual differences affect ventral striatal (VS) activation and connectivity when experiencing rewards within social contexts. Given that self-reported reward sensitivity and level of substance use have been associated with differences in VS activation, we set out to investigate whether these factors would be independently associated with enhancements to neural reward responses within social contexts. In this pre-registered study, participants (N =

BACKGROUND: Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is a spinocerebellar neurodegenerative disorder. The dentato-thalamo-cortical (DTC) pathway, an important cerebellar output involved in motor control, plays a crucial role in the neural mechanisms underlying ataxia symptoms in FRDA.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to quantify regional alterations in structure, connectivity, function, and neurometabolism along the DTC pathway in FRDA patients using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: Twenty-two individuals with FRDA and 22 healthy controls underwent a brain MRI. Volumetry, amplitude of low-frequ

Most people experience acute pain as a temporary condition, while a small subset develops chronic pain. The role of pain-related circuits driving this transition remains unclear. Using UK Biobank data and an independent dataset (OpenPain), we analyzed MRI scans of participants with acute musculoskeletal pain (n=160), categorizing them based on those who recovered (AMPR) and those who developed chronic pain (CMPO) later. A machine learning model was applied to predict follow-up outcomes in two independent validation cohorts. AMPR participants showed increased functional connectivity (FC) betwee

Chronic pain and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) frequently co-occur. However, how they interact in the brain to influence cognition and emotion is not well understood. In this study, we examined how PTSS affects working memory-related networks during an N-back task. In addition, we examined how these networks interact with subcortical threat regions and influence working memory and pain symptoms. Fifty-three chronic low back pain participants completed the N-back task during fMRI. Brain activation was analyzed in relation to PTSS as both a continuous measure and a high-versus-low group,

OBJECTIVE: The thalamus is a key hub in seizure propagation, and its nuclei are emerging targets for neuromodulation. However, the contributions of individual nuclei to epileptic networks remain unclear, particularly in children, who are less studied than adults. We investigated structural and functional thalamic alterations across different pediatric focal epilepsies and their associations with clinical features and postsurgical outcomes.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied children with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), and posterior quadrant epilepsy (PQE) and heal

We aim to investigate the progression of aging-related white matter (WM) degeneration, measured by fractional anisotropy (FA), in cognitively normal, healthy individuals over a long-term follow-up of 8.68 years. The study population consisted of 177 right-handed, healthy participants aged 21–89 years. Participants underwent cognitive assessments and MRI scans at three time points (Wave 1 = baseline; Wave 2 = approximately 4 years after Wave 1; Wave 3 = approximately 8 years after Wave 1). Three distinct Differential Tractography Analyses (DTA) were performed using the “Wave – previous Wave” sc

INTRODUCTION: The amygdala is critical for social cognition and undergoes profound damage in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). While its atrophy is well documented, changes in its structural connectivity and their behavioral relevance remain unclear.
METHODS: Using fixel-based analysis and tractography, we examined amygdala connectivity in patients with behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD; n = 21), semantic dementia (SD; n = 19), progressive non-fluent aphasia (PNFA; n = 18), and 28 controls. Associations with empathy and emotion recognition were explored using partial correlations.
RESULTS: BvFTD an

AIMS: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration. This study aimed to map alterations in structural and functional connectivity (SC and FC) in SCA3 using network-based statistics (NBS) and to explore the potential of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for modulating these aberrant networks and identifying novel therapeutic targets.
METHODS: NBS was used to compare SC and FC between a large cohort of 117 SCA3 patients and 163 healthy controls (HCs). Partial correlation analysis examined the associations between altered connectivity and clinical

Predicting chronological age from functional properties of the brain may be informative of children's neurodevelopmental trajectories. Specifically, neurodevelopmental or learning disorders may be associated with atypical maturation of brain networks. In this study, we examine the relationship between reading disorder (RD) and maturation of functional connectivity (FC) in the brain using a cross-sectional sample of N = 742 participants aged 6-21 years. A support vector regression model was trained to predict chronological age from FC data derived from a whole-brain model as well as multiple 'r
