Infection is a serious complication of catheter use and is associated with high complication and mortality rates. Gram-positive cocci (in particular Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci) are the leading cause of bloodstream infections. Due to the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria the management of these infections can be difficult. Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia is a frequent occurrence in patients with indwelling catheters. Endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and septic arthritis are common metastatic complications. We report the successful desensitization to cefotaxime in a patient with severe lumbar osteomyelitis of unknown bacteriology and hypersensitivity to the drug. Desensitization was carried out because of the unknown bacteriology, the favorable response to cefotaxime at that time, and hypersensitivity to other antibiotics. Hip ultrasound was performed on 44 children (114 exams) presenting with a painful hip or a limp thought to be due to hip disease. Effusions were found in 20 patients (21 hips).
