OBJECTIVE: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are a public health challenge in developing countries such as Colombia, causing anaemia and delayed growth and development in children. We aimed to estimate the geographical and prevalence trend of IPIs in the last 30 years in school and preschool children in Colombia.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. We identified potential manuscripts through PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS, Scielo and Google Scholar on the IPIs prevalence in school and preschool children in Colombia. Articles included in the qualitative an

AIMS: A novel Eimeria sp. is described from the endangered South Island takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri).
METHODS: Faeces were collected from South Island takahē in managed populations across two geographic locations within New Zealand, linked by extensive bird translocation. Faecal flotations were performed and oocysts collected were sporulated in sterile water at 25°C for 5 days. Morphometric measurements including length:width (L:W) ratios of oocysts and sporocysts were made of 65 oocysts using light microscopy under oil immersion. A retrospective histological review of archived post-mortem

Phosphoinositide lipids play key roles in a variety of processes in eukaryotic cells, but our understanding of their functions in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum is still very much limited. To gain a deeper comprehension of the roles of phosphoinositides in this important pathogen, we attempted gene inactivation for 24 putative effectors of phosphoinositide metabolism. Our results reveal that 79% of the candidates are refractory to genetic deletion and are therefore potentially essential for parasite growth. Inactivation of the gene coding for a Plasmodium-specific putative phosphoi

Successful infectious disease interventions can result in large reductions in parasite prevalence. Such demographic change has fitness implications for individual parasites and may shift the parasite's optimal life history strategy. Here, we explore whether declining infection rates can alter Plasmodium falciparum's investment in sexual versus asexual growth. Using a multiscale mathematical model, we demonstrate how the proportion of polyclonal infections, which decreases as parasite prevalence declines, affects the optimal sexual development strategy: Within-host competition in multiclone inf

Lymphatic filariasis caused by filarial nematode is an important disease leading to considerable morbidity throughout tropical countries. Even after specific elimination programs, the disease continue to spread in endemic countries. Thus newer therapeutic interventions are urgently needed to control the spread. In the present study, we have seen the effect of andrographolide (andro), a diterpenoid lactone from the leaves of Andrographis paniculata on filarial parasite Setaria cervi. There was time and concentration dependent decrease in motility and viability leading to death of parasite after

BACKGROUND: To identify any universal impact of strongyle parasite burden on the growth rate of young cattle.
METHODS: A meta-analysis and meta-regression of the relationship between differences in strongyle parasite burden between cohorts and average daily weight gain was conducted. Publications were identified from a search of databases applying PRISMA 2020 principles. Eligible studies had at least two groups of growing cattle on the same farm that were identical in composition, management and diet except for parasite exposure and were subject to body weight gain or average daily gain and f

The enigmatic larvae of the Old World genus Passeromyia Rodhain & Villeneuve, 1915 (Diptera: Muscidae) inhabit the nests of birds as saprophages or as haematophagous agents of myiasis among nestlings. Using light microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, we provide the first morphological descriptions of the first, second and third instar of P. longicornis (Macquart, 1851) (Diptera: Muscidae), the first and third instar of P. indecora (Walker, 1858) (Diptera: Muscidae), and we revise the larval morphology of P. heterochaeta (Villenueve, 1915) (Diptera: Mu

BACKGROUND: Human ascariasis is one of the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases worldwide. The immune response during human ascariasis is characterized by Th2 polarization and a mixed Th2/Th17 response during the pathogenesis of experimental larval ascariasis. Cytokines and other pro-inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO), are involved in helminthic infections. However, the role of NO in ascariasis remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: Given the importance of NO in inflammation, we aimed to determine the immunological and histopathological alterations in the livers of C57BL/6 iNOS-/-

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a widespread zoonosis and a significant economic concern and cause of morbidity in humans. A scarcity of education on the sources of CE infection and containment measures is considered to be a key factor responsible for persistent transmission within communities. Recently, edutainment approaches have captured the attention of health education (HE) professionals due to the benefits of integrating cognitive and emotional learning processes.
METHODS: A study was carried out in Sardinia, Italy, between 2020 and 2022, amid the SARS-Covid-19 pandemic. The p

Plasmodium falciparum, a protozoan parasite and causative agent of human malaria, has one of the most A/T-biased genomes sequenced to date. This may give the genome and the transcriptome unusual structural features. Recent progress in sequencing techniques has made it possible to study the secondary structures of RNA molecules at the transcriptomic level. Thus, in this study we produced the in vivo RNA structurome of a protozoan parasite with a highly A/U-biased transcriptome. We showed that it is possible to probe the secondary structures of P. falciparum RNA molecules in vivo using two diffe

This educational review article aims to provide information on the central nervous system (CNS) infectious and parasitic diseases that frequently cause seizures and acquired epilepsy in the developing world. We explain the difficulties in defining acute symptomatic seizures, which are common in patients with meningitis, viral encephalitis, malaria, and neurocysticercosis, most of which are associated with increased mortality and morbidity, including subsequent epilepsy. Geographic location determines the common causes of infectious and parasitic diseases in a particular region. Management issu

Trichomonas vaginalis is the most common non-viral cause of sexually transmitted infections globally. Infection by this protozoan parasite results in the clinical syndrome trichomoniasis, which manifests as an inflammatory disease with acute and chronic consequences. Half or more isolates of this parasite are themselves infected with one or more dsRNA viruses that can exacerbate the inflammatory syndrome. At least four distinct viruses have been identified in T. vaginalis to date, constituting species Trichomonas vaginalis virus 1 through Trichomonas vaginalis virus 4 in genus Trichomonasvirus

A wide range of protozoan pathogens either transmitted by vectors (Plasmodium, Babesia, Leishmania and Trypanosoma), by contaminated food or water (Entamoeba and Giardia), or by sexual contact (Trichomonas) invade various organs in the body and cause prominent human diseases, such as malaria, babesiosis, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, diarrhea, and trichomoniasis. Humans are frequently exposed to multiple pathogens simultaneously, or sequentially in the high-incidence regions to result in co-infections. Consequently, synergistic or antagonistic pathogenic effects could occur between microbes

E. histolytica is the etiological agent of intestinal amebiasis and liver abscesses, which still poses public health threat globally. Metronidazole is the drug of choice against amebiasis. However, metronidazole-resistant amoebic clinical isolates and strains have been reported recently, challenging the efforts for amebiasis eradication. In search of alternative treatments, E. histolytica transcriptomes have shown the association of genes involved in RNA metabolism with the virulence of the parasite. Among the upregulated genes in amoebic liver abscesses are the splicing factors EhU2AF2 and a

Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder in which abdominal pain is associated with a change in bowel habits. Gut inflammation might be one of the mechanisms of pathogenesis. However, the cause of IBS is not clearly understood. Post-infectious IBS (PI-IBS) is the onset of IBS after an episode of infectious gastroenteritis. While the exact pathophysiology of PI-IBS is not established, the mechanism might be an altered serotonin signaling activity, inflammation, malabsorption, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Various parasites such as Bla

A positive relationship between the hematophagous parasite-medicinal leech and the host (animals and humans) has been partially shown by many authors. But only direct influence was shown, and how they can influence indirectly has not been studied by anyone. Therefore, it became relevant to analyse the immunological parameters of blood and histological analysis of the central lymphoid organ of female rats on the 30th day after the birth of their offspring, as well as the same indicators in their offspring on the 30th and 60th days of ontogenesis under the indirect influence of saliva substances

Although species of the genus Ceratomyxa Thélohan, 1892 mostly parasitize marine fish around the world, a surprising diversity of the genus has recently been reported from Amazonian freshwater fish. In this study, we report a freshwater Ceratomyxa species parasitizing Hemiodus orthonops (Hemiodontidae) from the Paraná River (La Plata Basin) in a watershed flowing into the southern part of South America, which expands the geographic distribution of this fish parasite in the freshwater resources of the continent. We applied a combination of morphological, small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA),

Plasmodium malariae is often reported as a benign malaria parasite. There are limited data on its biology and disease burden in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) possibly due to the unavailability of specific and affordable tools for routine diagnosis and large epidemiology studies. In addition, P. malariae occurs at low parasite densities and in co-infections with other species, predominately P. falciparum. The paucity of data on P. malariae infections limits the capacity to accurately determine its contribution to malaria and the effect of control interventions against P. falciparum on its prevalence
