The Relationship between Systemic Immune Inflammatory Index, Prognostic Nutritional Index, and Postoperative Infection in Patients Undergoing Partial Hepatectomy for Liver Cancer.

Postoperative infections (POIs) significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality following partial hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) and Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) are recognized biomarkers for immune-inflammatory and nutritional status, their combined predictive value for POIs in liver surgery requires further investigation. This study evaluates SII and PNI as preoperative predictors for infections in this patient population. A retrospective observational study was conducted on 300 patients undergoing partial hepatect

Anesthetic Considerations in Geriatric Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery: A Review of Perioperative Management and Outcomes.

Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures worldwide and is particularly common in elderly patients due to the increased prevalence of age-related visual impairment. However, aging is associated with physiological, pharmacological, and clinical changes that significantly influence anesthetic management and perioperative outcomes. Age-related alterations in cardiovascular function, including reduced cardiac reserve, increased arterial stiffness, and impaired autonomic regulation, increase susceptibility to intraoperative hypotension and hemodynamic instability. Respirat

Closing gaps through innovation in the tuberculosis pathology value chain.

Despite being preventable and curable, tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent globally. In 2024, an estimated 10.7 million people developed TB, yet only 8.3 million were diagnosed, reflecting significant diagnostic gaps. These "missing millions" underscore systemic weaknesses within the TB pathology value chain, defined here as the sequence of processes from patient identification and specimen collection through testing, result reporting, linkage to treatment and monitoring. This review highlights key challenges and opportunities across each step of

Clinical Features and Outcome Measures Across Still Disease (Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Adult-Onset Still Disease) Cohorts Worldwide: A Systematic Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Multinational research is essential to improve recognition and management of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA). Current cohorts vary in the clinical variables and outcome measures collected. Adult-onset Still disease (AOSD) and sJIA are widely considered to comprise a single disease spectrum; however, classification criteria and clinical tools differ between groups. This systematic literature review aimed to identify clinical features and outcome measures collected across sJIA and AOSD cohorts worldwide to guide the development of a minimal dataset for Still disease. Circulating MicroRNAs do not provide a diagnostic benefit over tissue biopsy in patients with brain metastases.

Brain metastases (BMs) are frequent and devastating complications of systemic malignancies, necessitating accurate diagnosis and origin identification for effective treatment strategies. Invasive biopsies are currently required for definitive diagnosis, highlighting the need for less invasive diagnostic approaches and robust biomarkers. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have demonstrated potential as sensitive and specific diagnostic biomarkers in various cancers. Thus, our objective was to identify and compare miRNA profiles in BM tissue, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and plasma, with a specific fo

Exploratory Study of Prognostic Plasma Biomarkers in Patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by progressive pulmonary vascular lumen occlusion, ultimately leading to right ventricular failure and death. Risk stratification is essential for the management of patients with PAH. So far, B-type natriuretic peptide and its N-terminal pro-form are the only circulating biomarkers used as part of composite PAH risk assessment tools. Identification of other biomarkers of vascular or systemic origin may be valuable to provide additional information on disease severity and prognosis. Using proximity extension assay, >700 proteins related to

Management of Acute Diverticulitis and Incidental Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in a 67-Year-Old Male: A Case Report of Balancing Priorities in a High-Risk Patient.

Diverticular disease and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) represent distinct but significant clinical entities often associated with advanced age. Diverticulitis, a common complication of diverticular disease, can result in perforation and systemic complications, while AAAs, frequently asymptomatic, carry substantial morbidity and mortality risks if undetected or untreated. Advances in imaging have improved the early identification of these conditions, yet the simultaneous management of both presents unique challenges requiring multidisciplinary coordination. A 67-year-old male with a history
