Sagittal and transverse multisection magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 10 patients was used to obtain dimensions of the maternal pelvis, determine fetal position, and examine maternal and fetal soft tissues. Dimensions were measured with less than 1% instrument error, and bony landmarks were readily identified. MR pelvimetry is an accurate technique for obtaining traditional pelvimetric measurements without exposure to ionizing radiation. These techniques can be further used to investigate soft-tissue dystocia and obstructed labor.

Thirty children with first time urinary tract infection were investigated for vesicoureteral reflux after bladder catheterization. Micturition cystourethrography with X-ray was compared to scintigraphy because scintigraphy gives less than 10% radiation dose by fluoroscopy. Reflux to the renal pelvis was observed more frequently with scintigraphy, otherwise the nosographic sensitivity and the predictive value of a negative test were about the same (0.90). Scintigraphy is therefore recommended for routine control of reflux in children.

Incarcerated gravid uterus (IGU) is a rare disease process where the retroflexed uterus becomes trapped within the pelvis preventing normal pregnancy development. IGU's presenting chief complaints are common complaints that can occur in a normal pregnancy. It has a high delayed diagnosis rate, and a high morbidity and mortality to the pregnancy and to the pregnant patient. It is important for emergency medicine physicians to recognize this diagnosis, appropriately treat the acute complications and ensure follow up with our obstetrics colleagues.

Vulvar cancer accounts for 0.3 % of new cancer cases within the Unites States. Metastatic vulvar cancer with disease beyond the pelvis is rare and has a poor prognosis. Data on primary treatment including systemic treatments for distant metastatic vulvar disease is limited due to rarity and lack of clinical trials. The purpose of this article is to present an atypical presentation of recurrent vulvar squamous cell carcinoma with metastasis to phalanges soft tissue and bone, clavicle and to the lungs and intracranial space.

Ultrasound elastography is widely used to assess tissue stiffness for lesion characterization, including differentiation between benign and malignant lesions. This study focuses on the use of elastography in the male pelvis, including the prostate, testicles, and rectum, by comparing elastography types (shear wave and strain). This article provides a summary of the existing literature on the use of elastography in the male pelvic region and outlines the clinical perspective. Ultrasound elastography is a good technique for evaluating and monitoring lesions in the male pelvic region.

Toothpicks are commonly used but rarely ingested. Unlike most foreign bodies, if accidentally swallowed these rarely spontaneously pass. The duodenum has been reported as the most common site of toothpick foreign body lodgement in the upper gastrointestinal tract. We report the case of a 57-year-old presenting with recurrent urosepsis after non recognition of a toothpick impaction in the duodenum with fistulisation into the right renal pelvis. Endoscopic removal of the foreign body was successful in management of the urosepsis.

An 89-year-old man with a history of a malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts in the right thigh with recurrent/metastatic tumor in the right pelvis was found to have pulmonary nodules concerning for metastatic disease. Subsequent PET/CT unexpectedly demonstrated a right lower quadrant intussusception with a hypermetabolic mass serving as a lead point. Pathology of the resected mass causing the intussusception was compatible with a metastasis from the patient's malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts.

A 39-year-old man with untreated HIV presented with watery, non-bloody diarrhea and associated 25-lb weight loss. His workup was notable for a CT abdomen/pelvis which showed an entero-enteric intussusception of 3.4 cm without an underlying pathologic mass. The patient's intussusception resolved without intervention, as is typical of telescoping <3.5 cm. HIV is associated with an increased risk of developing intussusception because of an increased incidence of infectious and neoplastic conditions of the bowel.

The obstructed haemivagina with ipsilateral renal agenesis (OHVIRA) syndrome also known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, a rare congenital malformation in females, results due to developmental abnormality in the müllerian duct. We are reporting a case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with pain and a lump in abdomen for the last 5 months. The MRI abdomen and pelvis confirmed the diagnosis of OHVIRA syndrome. The patient underwent haematocolpos and haematometra drainage, followed by vaginal septum resection.

A 23-year-old female-treated patient of osteomalacia and secondary hyperparathyroidism with hypophosphatemia presented with a 5-year history of bilateral groin pain and stiffness of both hips and difficulty in walking. Plain radiographs of the pelvis showed bilateral coxa vara deformity. She was managed surgically by a single-stage bilateral subtrochanteric corrective osteotomy with the internal fixation. After the osteotomy healing at 3 months, the patient was pain free and walked comfortably with an increased range of hip motion.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) may occur at any site in the body. SFTs can only be conclusively diagnosed based on histopathologic and immunohistochemical characteristics of the tumor. The presence of SFTs in the abdomen and pelvis is extremely rare. To our knowledge no cases of urethral solitary fibrous tumor in the literature have been reported so far. We present a case of a solitary fibrous tumor arising from the urethra in a twenty-three-year-old female presenting with vaginal mass.

OBJECTIVE: In this article we will illustrate the role of subtraction imaging for abdominal MRI applications.
CONCLUSION: Subtraction imaging has multiple applications for imaging the mediastinum, abdomen, and pelvis. Removing any preexisting signal of T1 unenhanced images causes contrast enhancement within a mass to become more conspicuous on subtracted sequences. This is helpful when evaluating a lesion with high signal on unenhanced T1-weighted sequences, where visual detection of enhancement can be difficult on conventional MRI.

Surgical and standard endourology options are limited in transplant patients with severe ureteric stenosis, particularly when access to the transplant renal pelvis is limited. The use of a silicone-polytetrafluoroethelene (PTFE)-bonded extraanatomic urinary tract stent for urinary tract drainage is described in two patients. This technique of ureteric reconstruction in renal transplantation may be considered when standard approaches have failed. It appears to be safe when performed by radiologists and urologists with expertise in percutaneous renal access.

Cytogenetic investigation was attempted on 44 tumors from 44 patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the upper urinary tract (pelvis and ureter), and karyotypes were obtained in 27 tumors. Numerical changes prevailed, but are not specific for this type of tumor (trisomy 7, -Y, or both). In the light of previously reported data on TCC, the finding of a del(9q) as the only anomaly in one of the cases may be meaningful. Patients showing -Y and/or trisomy 7 had a poor prognosis.

Double ureter is a frequent congenital malformation and the presence of a ureterocele on the ureter draining the superior renal pelvis is a not exceptional association. The abnormality is usually diagnosed in children by intravenous urography or ultrasound. It is extremely rare to find such a lesion in different members of the same family, as only a few cases have been published in the literature. In the material of 300 kidneys, collected from adult corpses of both sexes, the presence of double renal pelvis and duplicated ureter within the renal hilus was detected in 4 cases. In the investigated double kidneys the number of segmental arteries ranged from 4 to 6. In two out of the examined organs there were double posterior branches of the renal arteries and consequently, two posterior arterial segments. In two kidneys the segmental arteries crossed the urinary tract structures.

Nineteen patients underwent laparoscopic placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter with suture fixation into the pelvis. Operating time ranged from 20 to 60 min (median, 33), and the median postoperative stay for patients admitted solely for catheter placement was 1 day. No significant morbidity was associated with this procedure, and all but one catheter functioned well over the long term. Suture fixation of laparoscopically placed peritoneal dialysis catheters is straightforward, and may achieve better catheter function.

Ureterocele is a congenital cystic dilatation of the intravesical segment of the ureter. As a consequence, the proximal ureter and renal pelvis become dilated and that results in renal-parenchymal pathological involvement. Management of this anomaly is still controversial. Among the therapeutical options there is a place for endoscopic punction. Our experience with 11 patients undergoing this treatment modality is reported. In all these cases endoscopic punction was the initial treatment. In 7 patients this technique was all that was needed. The technique of intravesical punction is described …

Patients with symptoms of sacral plexopathy, radiculopathy, or sciatica may have disease originating in the neural elements, sacrum, bony pelvis, pelvic soft tissues, or gluteal region. As illustrated in our companion article, the sacral plexus and surrounding structures can be visualized in detail with MR imaging. This pictorial essay illustrates the MR findings in a number of abnormalities affecting the sacral plexus. Multiplanar MR examination is particularly helpful in defining neural levels of involvement by disease in this region.
