Home-based exoskeleton use to improve quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis: study protocol of a multicentre, randomised, cross-over trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) frequently leads to mobility impairment, fatigue and a significant decline in health-related quality of life (QoL). Home-based assistive technology, such as robotic exoskeletons, offers a promising solution to enhance independent mobility and increase the intensity of motor training. Long-term functional and quality of life benefits of light lower-limb exoskeleton home use have yet to be determined. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study is to determine the efficacy of an 8-week period, home-based use of a robotic exoskeleton in improving QoL in ind

Perceptions of health, cognition, and pain among middle-aged and older adults with migraine: A population-based cross-sectional study examining findings from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

OBJECTIVE: The study compared middle-aged and older Canadians with and without migraine, examining how self-perceptions of health, cognition, and pain relate to objective health metrics. BACKGROUND: Migraine, a debilitating neurological disorder, affects 8.3% of Canadians and 14.0% of the global population. Research has primarily focused on those aged 18-50 years, leaving middle-aged and older adults understudied. Individuals' perceptions of their health, cognition, and pain can tangibly impact their well-being, with negative health self-perceptions linked to higher hospitalization, illness,

Testing the incremental effectiveness of pay-for-performance to improve implementation of a motivational interviewing brief intervention for substance use disorders in HIV settings: Results of a parallel cluster-randomized type 3 hybrid trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) have a serious adverse impact on the physical and mental well-being of people with HIV. Previously, using a 39-site dual-randomized type 2 hybrid trial design, findings from the Substance Abuse Treatment to HIV Care Project supported the Implementation and Sustainment Facilitation (ISF) strategy to improve implementation and effectiveness of a motivational interviewing brief intervention (MIBI) for SUD within HIV service settings across the United States (US). Building on this trial, this parallel cluster-randomized type 3 hybrid trial aimed to test t

UK Medical Cannabis Registry palliative care patients cohort: initial experience and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Palliative care aims to improve quality of life through optimal symptom control and pain management. Cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) have a proven role in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. However, there is a paucity of high-quality evidence with regards to the optimal therapeutic regimen, safety, and effectiveness of CBMPs in palliative care, as existing clinical trials are limited by methodological heterogeneity. The aim of this study is to summarise the outcomes of the initial subgroup of patients from the UK Medical Cannabis Registry who wer

[Surgical Treatment of Maxillary Gingival Carcinoma with Mental Retardation-A Case Report].

Many patients with mental retardation have a limited awareness of abnormalities in the oral cavity, making early detection of oral cancer difficult. Moreover, during examination and treatment, these patients may not understand well-intentioned verbal explanations and may express their anxiety through nonverbal communication. Herein we discuss a case in which favorable results were obtained when surgical treatment was performed on a maxillary gingival carcinoma patient with mental retardation. The patient was a 61-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with maxillary gingival pain. A bio

A Review on Role of Yoga in the Management of Patients with Cardiac Arrhythmias.

Evidence suggests that yoga is safe and effective in improving various risk factors, quality of life (QoL), and psychological burden that is related to arrhythmia. However, this is the first-ever systematic review performed to report the role of yoga in arrhythmia. We have performed a literature search using Cochrane Library, Medline/PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and IndMED electronic databases up to 3, January 2018. Of 240 articles, 6 potentially eligible articles were identified and included in the review. Results showed that yoga could be considered an efficient adjuvant in reduci

Phaeochromocytoma presenting as an acute coronary syndrome.

A 44-year-old Caucasian man presented to the emergency department in acute cardiogenic shock, with pulmonary oedema, secondary to an acute myocardial infarction and in a hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state. The previous day he had undergone a colonoscopy, which revealed features of colitis, and was started on prednisolone. He had been previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, migraine and anxiety attacks. While awaiting a coronary angiogram he developed abdominal pain and a CT scan was performed and found a large right adrenal mass. Plasma-free metadrenaline levels were elevated. After 4 months

Formal procedural skills training using a fresh frozen cadaver model: a pilot study.

Graduating medical students are expected to be proficient in a number of procedural skills. A structured curriculum is infrequently available. In addition, the use of a mannequin tends to be unrealistic and students continue to have some anxiety when performing procedures on patients. This pilot study was designed to demonstrate the utility of a fresh frozen cadaver model in practicing procedural skills as compared to mannequins. Seven third-year students carried out a number of basic procedural skills using a mannequin model and a fresh frozen cadaver. We surveyed the students after they had

Prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder in the Spanish Population: Cross-Sectional Web-Based Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is defined as excessive concern with mild or nonexistent defects in personal physical appearance, which are not perceived by others. The worldwide prevalence of BDD ranges between 0.5% and 3.2%, with no differences across genders. The mean age of onset of BDD is 16.9 years. BDD is typically associated with young age, psychiatric disorders, and dermatological procedures. Patients with BDD typically display poorer mental health status than patients diagnosed with other mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of

Influence of psychological variables on the diagnosis of facet joint involvement in chronic spinal pain.

BACKGROUND: Facet or zygapophysial joint pain is one of the common conditions responsible for chronic spinal pain. Controlled diagnostic blocks are considered the only means of reliable diagnosis of facet joint pain, due to the inability of physical examination, clinical symptoms, radiologic evaluation, and nerve conduction studies to provide a reliable diagnosis. The prevalence of facet joint pain has been established to be 15% to 45% of patients with low back pain, 39% to 67% of patients with neck pain, and 34% to 48% of patients with thoracic pain. However, using only a single block, false-
