Two cases of Poland syndrome, diagnosed during the neonatal period, are reported. The children exhibited the following malformations: absence of the costosternal head of the pectoralis major, brachysyndactyly, hypoplasia of the upper limb. There were also other associated anomalies such as: Sprengel deformity in one case, hypoplasia of the lower limb and absence of a toe on the same site, in the other case. The authors point out the possibility of associating other multiple abnormalities and they examine the various pathogenic hypothesis presented in the literature.

The function of peritoneal macrophages from Rickettsia prowazeki-infected guinea pigs at various intervals of postinfection immunity was studied. The organisation of a regional quality control scheme for salicylate and paracetamol estimations in plasma is described. The results show considerable variation in both bias and precision between laboratories, with some overall improvement in performance during the second year of the scheme. Calcium balances were determined in 13 patients during 2--4 3-day periods following both period marking (with carmine) and continuous marking (with polyethylene glycol or chromium). The authors analyse 46 cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia through Bochdalek's foramen, discovered during the neonatal period. An autopsy study showed the various causes of postoperative mortality, and the authors studied pre, per and postoperative prognosis. A search for the causes and mechanisms of the complications suggested measures liable to improve survival. The authors tried from this data to determine the best management of this malformation.

Addition of normal rat serum to mouse or rat IgE antibody blocks the passive cutaneous sensitization of rats with either IgE. The inhibition can be obtained with isologous and autologous rat serum. The blocking factor was purified and characterized as a molecule with a MW of 69,000 daltons, a sedimentation rate of 4.5 s and an isoelectric point of pH 4.7. The factor blocks the PCA reaction also at previously sensitized skin sites and seems to act on the secretory phase of mediator release.

The authors relate a neo-natal case of cardiac diverticulum of the right ventricle, reaching the epigastric area and associated with several connected malformations : partial pericardial agenesis, anterior diaphagmatic breach, diastasis of Musc. recti abdominis, skin aplasia in the epigastric area, and, moreover, dextrocardia with Fallot tetralogy. The diverticulum was successful resected in emergency.

An enzymatic deficiency is the main reason of neonatal jaundice. It was the question, if there were other enzymatic restrictions of liver function in newborns. This investigation deals with the fructose metabolism in dependence of the concentration of bilirubin. No differences were found between unicteric and icteric newborns. Thus, one cannot suspect any diminution of the activity of the enzymes being necessary for fructose metabolism.

A consecutive series of 20 children (21 hips) with idiopathic hip joint instability, diagnosed after the neonatal period, is presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by hip joint arthrography. In all the children, 1.5-21 months old at the time of diagnosis, closed reduction could be achieved. They were treated in plaster directly or after treatment of contractures in the adductor muscles of the hip joint. Stability was rapidly attained during plaster treatment.
