[Prospective study of favorable factors in follow-up of drug addicted patients--apropos of 257 patients of the Cassini Center in Paris].

UNLABELLED: Assessing the effectiveness of treatment is one of the main concerns of any medical process. The different ways proposed for assuming the responsibility of drug addicts and their efficacy are greatly heterogeneous since drug-abusing takes on diverse forms. Thus, in order to closely target the request of drug addicts and adjust their follow-up, we undertook to study prospectively, for 3 months, a population of drug addicts taking medical advice for the first time at the Cassini center in Paris, with the assumption that some predictors may forecast outcomes. METHOD: Data were obtain

Response style and severity and chronicity of depressive disorders in primary health care.

BACKGROUND: Response styles theory of depression postulates that rumination is a central factor in occurrence, severity and maintaining of depression. High neuroticism has been associated with tendency to ruminate. We investigated associations of response styles and neuroticism with severity and chronicity of depression in a primary care cohort study. METHODS: In the Vantaa Primary Care Depression Study, a stratified random sample of 1119 adult patients was screened for depression using the Prime-MD. Depressive and comorbid psychiatric disorders were diagnosed using SCID-I/P and SCID-II inter

The mental health of UK ex-servicemen with a combat-related or a non-combat-related visual impairment: does the cause of visual impairment matter?

AIMS: Since the start of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the numbers of young service personnel who have sustained a combat-related visual impairment have increased. This cross-sectional study examined the mental well-being of ex-servicemen (aged 22-55 years) with a visual impairment and determined if the mental health of those with a combat-related visual impairment differed from those whose visual impairment is not combat-related. METHODS: Male ex-service personnel with a visual impairment completed a telephone interview assessing the presence of depressive symptomatology, probable a

Perceived history of anaphylaxis and parental overprotection, autonomy, anxiety, and depression in food allergic young adults.

This study examined autonomy, anxiety, depression, and perceptions of parental behavior in 86 food allergic young adults and 344 healthy young adults between the ages of 18 and 22. Participants completed an online survey measuring self-reported autonomy, anxiety, depression, and perceptions of parental behavior. Results indicated that, as a group, food allergic young adults did not differ from healthy peers. However, food allergic young adults who reported having experienced an anaphylactic reaction described their disease as more severe, reported more worry about their disease, and rated thei

Sex differences in clinical predictors of suicidal acts after major depression: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Whether sex differences exist in clinical risk factors associated with suicidal behavior is unknown. The authors postulated that among men with a major depressive episode, aggression, hostility, and history of substance misuse increase risk for future suicidal behavior, while depressive symptoms, childhood history of abuse, fewer reasons for living, and borderline personality disorder do so in depressed women. METHOD: Patients with DSM-III-R major depression or bipolar disorder seeking treatment for a major depressive episode (N=314) were followed for 2 years. Putative predictors w

Validation of the Mood Disorder Questionnaire for bipolar disorders in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to determine the validity of the Mood Disorder Questionnaire-Adolescent Version (MDQ-A) as a screening instrument for bipolar disorders (I, II, not otherwise specified, and cyclothymia) in an adolescent outpatient psychiatric population. METHOD: 104 adolescents and their parents completed the MDQ-A. Three versions of the MDQ-A were compared: (1) self report of symptoms by adolescent, (2) attributional report-how the adolescent believed teachers or friends would report his/her symptoms, and (3) parent report of adolescent's symptoms. DSM-IV diagnosis was made

Excessive daytime sleepiness in young adults: a 20-year prospective community study.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a symptom with high clinical and public health importance because of its association with increased risk for accidents, decreased productivity, and impaired quality of life. Little information is available regarding the longitudinal course or clinical correlates of EDS. The aim of this study was to explore associations between self-reported EDS, sleep disorder symptoms, major depression, and anxiety in a longitudinal community study of young adults. METHOD: A prospective single-age community study of young adults (Zurich Cohort Study) was condu

The prevalence of dyslexia and AD/HD in a sample of forensic psychiatric rapists.

The prevalence of dyslexia and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) (DSM-IV) is markedly increased among those who are sentenced for criminal offences. The aim of the study was to identify developmental disabilities, dyslexia and AD/HD among severely disturbed men in forensic psychiatric care, and to study the co-occurrence of such disabilities, with the objective to discuss the importance of the diagnoses in forensic psychiatry. The participants were 10 males who had committed rape on adult women, and included two murder-rapists, one of which had murdered more than one victim (i.e

Exposure of mental health nurses to violence associated with job stress, life satisfaction, staff resilience, and post-traumatic growth.

Workplace violence towards health workers in hospitals and in mental health units in particular is increasing. The aim of the present study was to explore the effects of exposure to violence, job stress, staff resilience, and post-traumatic growth (PTG) on the life satisfaction of mental health nurses. A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of mental health nurses (n = 118) working in a large mental health centre in Israel. Verbal violence by patients was reported by 88.1% of the nurses, and 58.4% experienced physical violence in the past year. Physical and verbal

Developmental instability in social anhedonia: an examination of minor physical anomalies and clinical characteristics.

Developmental instability (DI) refers to the inability of the developing brain to buffer the effects of genetic and environmental insults. This concept has been invoked to better understand how fetal brain development goes awry in schizophrenia and related spectrum disorders. This study examined one marker of DI, minor physical anomalies (MPAs), and its association with a putative indicator of schizotypy, the trait of social anhedonia. MPAs and clinical symptoms were assessed within a community sample of psychometrically identified individuals high in social anhedonia and a matched group of he
