The consequences of host heterogeneity for parasite transmission depend on how host infectiousness is determined.

Host heterogeneities in susceptibility and infectiousness can affect parasite transmission, but standard analyses typically consider a limited range of epidemiological scenarios. We propose two contrasting phenomenological scenarios that capture a wide range of processes by which host infectiousness is determined and explore how these scenarios affect the impact of host heterogeneities on parasite transmission. Specifically, we contrast two limiting cases for how host infectiousness may be determined: 'Recipient dependence' (RD), where a host's infectiousness is a fixed characteristic of the r

[Research progress on polysomnographic characteristics and cognitive function in perimenopausal obstructive sleep apnea].

The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is significantly increased in perimenopausal women. However, its symptoms overlap considerably with menopausal symptoms, leading to a very high underdiagnosis rate. Unrecognized OSA may exacerbate cognitive decline through intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation. Recent studies have revealed a unique polysomnographic (PSG) "physiological fingerprint" in this population: predominance of hypopnea events, respiratory events highly concentrated in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, a "high-frequency low-amplitude" hypoxic pattern, and sleep fragmen

Follicular Lymphoma Microenvironment Characteristics Associated with Tumor Cell Mutations and MHC Class II Expression.

UNLABELLED: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is a B-cell malignancy with a complex tumor microenvironment that is rich in nonmalignant immune cells. We applied single-cell RNA sequencing to characterize the diverse tumor and immune cell populations of FL and identified major phenotypic subsets of FL T cells, including a cytotoxic CD4 T-cell population. We characterized four major FL subtypes with differential representation or relative depletion of distinct T-cell subsets. By integrating exome sequencing, we observed that somatic mutations are associated with, but not definitive for, reduced MHC expre

[22q11.2DS Syndrome as a Genetic Subtype of Schizophrenia].

INTRODUCTION: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is associated with the microdeletion of this chromosomal region, and represents the second most common genetic syndrome after Down's syndrome. In patients with schizophrenia, 22q11.2DS has a prevalence of 2%, and in selected groups can be increased to between 32-53%. OBJECTIVE: To describe the generalities of 22q11.2DS syndrome as a genetic subtype of schizophrenia, its clinical characteristics, molecular genetic aspects, and frequency in different populations. METHODS: A review was performed from 1967 to 2013 in scientific databases, c

Temporal changes in neutral endopeptidase/CD10 immunoexpression in the cyclic and early pregnant canine endometrium.

CD10 is a multifunctional transmembrane neutral endopeptidase (NEP) that is considered to be a reliable marker of ectopic human endometrial stroma. Available information on NEP/CD10 protein expression in animal endometria is scarce. This study focused on the immunolocalization of NEP/CD10 in the canine uterus and on its temporal changes during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy (Days 11 to 23 post-LH surge) in healthy females. NEP/CD10 expression was found in the canine endometrial stroma in all stages of the estrous cycle, showing cyclic differences both in intensity and in distribution pa

Psychometric characteristics of the Penn State Worry Questionnaire in an Argentinean sample: a cross-cultural contribution.

Although studies in several populations have provided support for Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSQW) reliability and validity, factor analysis studies carried out on different populations show divergent results. The aim of this article is to contribute with the cross-cultural literature on PSWQ. This report describes two studies examining the psychometric characteristics of a revised Argentinean version of the PSWQ. In the first study, items of original PSWQ were translated into Spanish and then back-translated into English. Then, in order to examine its reliability and factorial structure,

Evolution of Dysphagia Rehabilitation in Japan Since the 1980s: Expanding Dental Roles in Interprofessional Care-A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Japan, the world's first super-aged society, has confronted rapid population aging and increasing healthcare demands earlier than any other country. In this context, dysphagia rehabilitation has become a critical issue affecting quality of life and survival. With nearly 30% of the population aged ≥65 years, Japan has developed a distinctive dysphagia rehabilitation model characterized by interprofessional collaboration and dental involvement. This narrative review describes its historical evolution and structural characteristics. Methods: This narrative review employed a

Incidence of post-traumatic epilepsy following paediatric traumatic brain injury: protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) is a recognised complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and is associated with higher rates of mortality and morbidity when compared with patients with TBI who do not develop PTE. The majority of the literature on PTE has focused on adult populations, and consequently there is a paucity of information regarding paediatric cohorts. Additionally, there is considerable heterogeneity surrounding the reported incidence of PTE following childhood TBI in the current literature. The primary aim of our study is to summarise reported PTE incidences in pa

HIV, HCV, HBV, and syphilis among transgender women from Brazil: Assessing different methods to adjust infection rates of a hard-to-reach, sparse population.

Different sampling strategies, analytic alternatives, and estimators have been proposed to better assess the characteristics of different hard-to-reach populations and their respective infection rates (as well as their sociodemographic characteristics, associated harms, and needs) in the context of studies based on respondent-driven sampling (RDS). Despite several methodological advances and hundreds of empirical studies implemented worldwide, some inchoate findings and methodological challenges remain. The in-depth assessment of the local structure of networks and the performance of the avail

Multiple stromal populations contribute to pulmonary fibrosis without evidence for epithelial to mesenchymal transition.

There are currently few treatment options for pulmonary fibrosis. Innovations may come from a better understanding of the cellular origin of the characteristic fibrotic lesions. We have analyzed normal and fibrotic mouse and human lungs by confocal microscopy to define stromal cell populations with respect to several commonly used markers. In both species, we observed unexpected heterogeneity of stromal cells. These include numerous cells with molecular and morphological characteristics of pericytes, implicated as a source of myofibroblasts in other fibrotic tissues. We used mouse genetic tool

Performance of prediction models for BRCA mutation carriage in three racial/ethnic groups: findings from the Northern California Breast Cancer Family Registry.

PURPOSE: Patients with early-onset breast and/or ovarian cancer frequently wish to know if they inherited a mutation in one of the cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1 or BRCA2. Accurate carrier prediction models are needed to target costly testing. Two widely used models, BRCAPRO and BOADICEA, were developed using data from non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), but their accuracies have not been evaluated in other racial/ethnic populations. METHODS: We evaluated the BRCAPRO and BOADICEA models in a population-based series of African American, Hispanic, and NHW breast cancer patients tested for BRCA1 and

Development of a nomogram to predict probability of positive initial prostate biopsy among Japanese patients.

OBJECTIVES: Several nomograms for prostate cancer detection have recently been developed. Because the incidence of prostate cancer is lower among Asian men, nomograms based on Western populations cannot be directly applied to Japanese men. We, therefore, developed a model for predicting the probability of a positive initial prostate biopsy using clinical and laboratory data from a Japanese male population. METHODS: Data were collected from 834 Japanese male referrals who underwent initial prostate biopsies as individual screening. We analyzed age, total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level,

Nature and nurture: overcoming constraints on immunity.

Parasitic infections in man and domestic animals exhibit two striking characteristics (a) their prevalence is high, but infections are unequally distributed among individuals within populations and (b) immunity is often slow to develop and appears, at best, only partially effective. Recent immunological and epidemiological studies suggest that effective immunity can develop, but that high prevalence within populations reflects the operation, not only of socio-economic and climatic factors, or husbandry practices, but also of powerful environmentally induced constraints upon the development of

Association of social network characteristics with HIV knowledge, stigma, and testing: findings from a study of racial and ethnic minority women in a small Western city.

Black and Latina women are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Despite existing research linking social networks and HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) and other high-risk populations, little research has examined how ethnic/racial minority women's social networks shape HIV prevention and intervention targets. Using interviews with a sample of 165 predominantly Black and Latina-identifying women from a small city in the Western U.S., this research examines the relationship between egocentric network characteristics and HIV knowledge, attitudes, and testing history. Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes Among Immigrant Women in the US and Europe: A Systematic Review.

Human migration is not a new phenomenon, but it has changed significantly with the advance of globalization. We focus on differences in the published literature concerning migration and health (EU vs the US), centering specifically on reproductive health outcomes. We conducted a literature search in the Pubmed and Embase databases. We reviewed papers that contrast migrants to native-born populations and analyzed differences between countries as well as challenges for future research. The prevalence of low birthweight among migrants varies by the host country characteristics as well as the comp
