The impact of sleep on heart health: contemporary research and medical practice.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review discusses current research (between July 2024 and January 2026) on sleep disorders and cardiovascular disease, highlighting underlying biological processes, clinical outcomes, and therapeutic strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: More than a billion adults worldwide are affected by sleep disorders that significantly increase heart disease risk. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is increasingly recognised as an independent predictor of major cardiovascular complications, with nocturnal hypoxaemia emerging as a critical marker for risk stratification. Continuous positive airw

Research Progress on the Potential Mechanisms and Multimodal Management of Psychocardiological Disease.

Cardiovascular disease frequently coexists with anxiety and depression, creating a complex bidirectional relationship between mental and cardiovascular health. Anxiety and depression may increase cardiovascular risk, impair treatment adherence and self-management, and contribute to poorer long-term outcomes. Conversely, acute cardiovascular events, persistent physical symptoms, and functional limitations may trigger or exacerbate psychological distress. This narrative review focuses on coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome, and heart failure, and summarizes the epidemiological assoc

A CRISPR knockout mouse library for functional genomics in influenza research.

Functional validation of host factors in whole-animal models is a major bottleneck in virology; it hinders the translation of data from in vitro studies into a deeper understanding of the viral life cycle and pathogenesis. To address this challenge, we developed a systematic in vivo screening platform for influenza A virus. This platform comprises a library of 84 CRISPR-Cas9-generated gene-modified mouse lines targeting host factors prioritized from the literature and in vitro small interfering RNA (siRNA) screening studies. Using this resource, we identified 17 host factors whose genetic abla

Exploring the research landscape of exosomes in Parkinson's disease: a bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and pathological aggregation of α-synuclein, while early diagnosis and disease stratification remain constrained by the lack of sensitive and specific biomarkers. Exosomes carry proteins, lipids, and diverse nucleic acids and mediate intercellular communication; they may participate in α-synuclein propagation and neuroinflammation and have become a research focus as biomarkers and delivery vehicles due to their stability and potential to cross the blood-brain barrier. METH

Preclinical Models of Venous Thrombosis: A Critical Appraisal for Translational Research.

CLINICAL PROBLEM: Venous thromboembolism, encompassing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, affects ≈1 to 2 per 1000 individuals annually and represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite advances in anticoagulation therapy, significant gaps remain in understanding thrombosis resolution, postthrombotic syndrome, and identifying patients at risk for recurrence. Animal models are essential for mechanistic studies and preclinical drug development, yet their translational success has been inconsistent. Critical evaluation of available models is necessary to guide a

Research at the Paris Foundling Hospital, Part 2: After the Revolution.

BACKGROUND: We know little about how neonatal research changed at the Paris Foundling Hospital following the revolution. SUMMARY: The number of unwanted children rose, and 5,392 infants were admitted in 1826 - a quarter of all infants born in Paris; 26% of them died in the infirmary before transport. The infants' appalling mortality was associated with artificial nutrition, and transfer to mercenary nurses in the countryside was organized. In the 1830s sedentary nurses began to run short, and nearly all babies were fed artificially at some time. François Chaussier was director at the Maternit

[Research on Exoskeleton Human-Machine Interaction for Walking Assistance in Myasthenia].

To address the insufficient human-machine interaction adaptability in current lower-limb rehabilitation exoskeletons, this study proposes a lower-limb assistive exoskeleton featuring active actuation at the hip and knee joints and passive following at the ankle joint. A rigid self-adaptive human-machine interface is adopted to provide both effective assistive torque and structural compliance, aiming to deliver gait assistance for individuals with muscle weakness while improving wearing comfort. First, a bionic geometric structure of the exoskeleton was constructed based on human lower-limb bio

Advances in research on the effects of bile acids and their receptors on intestinal function.

Bile acids (BAs), once regarded primarily as detergents facilitating lipid digestion, are now recognized as pivotal signaling molecules that orchestrate intestinal and systemic physiology through a diverse network of nuclear and membrane receptors, with distinct receptor classes mediating complementary transcriptional and rapid signaling responses, including Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR), Takeda G protein-coupled Receptor 5 (TGR5), Pregnane X Receptor (PXR), Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor α (PPARα), Vitamin D Receptor (VDR), and Mas-related G protein-coupled Receptor member X4 (MRGPRX

Research and application of digital technology in the diagnosis and treatment of androgenetic alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of alopecia in the world. Although AGA may not cause physical damage to the human body, it will bring serious psychological harm and a decline in quality of life. In the past, the diagnosis and treatment of AGA in clinic mostly depended on the experience of doctors. The introduction of digital technology will provide visual images for the hair characterization of AGA, assist the staging evaluation and differential diagnosis of AGA, and shows potential for improving efficiency and accuracy in reported studies under specific conditions. In term

Review of the Molecular and Developmental Basis of Myhre Syndrome, Bench Research.

Myhre syndrome (MS) is a connective-tissue disorder within the acromelic dysplasia spectrum. It is characterized by congenital craniofacial, skeletal, cutaneous anomalies, respiratory, cardiovascular along with intellectual disability, deafness, and progressive fibrosis. MS is caused by germline variants in the transcriptional co-regulator SMAD4 (mothers against DPP homolog 4). SMAD4 is a key intracellular mediator of signal transduction and participates in several pathways, notably canonical TGFβ and BMP signaling. These pathways play central roles in developmental and homeostatic processes.

[Research progress on the impact of physical activity on myopia in children and adolescents].

Childhood and adolescent myopia has emerged as a growing public health concern worldwide, with accumulating evidence confirming regular physical activity as a robust preventive strategy against myopia. This article systematically reviews the associations between the characteristics of physical activity and myopia development in children and adolescents. Existing studies have demonstrated that ball sports exert prominent effects on curbing myopia progression, while outdoor physical activity confers superior protective benefits relative to indoor exercise. Consistently, increased engagement in p

Research progress and applications of functional hydrogels in nasal wound healing.

Nasal wound healing presents a distinct clinical challenge in otorhinolaryngology, complicated by the unique physicochemical environment of the nasal cavity-including a slightly acidic mucosal pH (≈ 6.3-6.9), shear-thinning mucus rheology (healthy viscosity ≈ 0.1-1 Pa·s, elevated to 1.6-3.2 Pa·s in chronic sinusitis), continuous mucociliary clearance (MCC) with ciliary beat frequencies of ~ 10 Hz, and enzymatic activity dominated by lysozyme. Conventional nasal packing materials-such as Vaseline gauze and polyvinyl alcohol sponges-suffer from poor biocompatibility, rigid mechanical properties,

Orofacial cleft research and the Sustainable Development Goals: a bibliometric study.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFC) are common congenital conditions occurring in 1 of 700 births. They have lifelong nutritional, educational, and psychosocial impacts, and require multidisciplinary care from the antenatal period into adulthood. In 2010, the World Health Organization resolved to strengthen responses to congenital conditions, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 targets. In this bibliometric mapping exercise based on inferred SDG themes from metadata, we evaluate the extent to which OFC research mentions these SDGs, examining differences ac

[Role and research progress of dental medicine in physical anthropology studies].

Physical anthropology is a discipline that studies human physical characteristics and their evolutionary patterns through the analysis of human biological remains. Oral tissues such as teeth and jawbones, serving as crucial or even exclusive materials among human biological remains, establish oral medicine's central role in this field. This paper reviewed the advances in oral medicine's research on key physical anthropology topics and methodologies, including human origins and evolution, paleopathology, paleodietary reconstruction, and paleomicrobiology. In human origins and evolution research
