Epidemiology of Motor Vehicle Accident-Associated Eye Injuries Presenting to United States Emergency Departments, 2000-2020.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the epidemiology of motor vehicle accident (MVA) related eye injuries presenting to the United States (US) emergency departments (EDs) from 2000 to 2020. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System - All Injury Program (NEISS-AIP) gathers information from 66 participating US EDs for nonfatal injuries. We queried NEISS-AIP for MVA-related eye injuries from 2000 to 2020, and collected data on diagnosis, mechanism of injury, and patient demographics. Non-ocular injuries were collected from 2018 to 2020. We extrapolated national estimates using the

Ocular manifestations in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: To provide a large-scale analysis on the demographics and ocular comorbidities in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) patients in the US. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This is an exploratory cross-sectional study comparing medical records of EDS patients to the general population on demographic variables and ICD-10 ocular diagnoses. A research platform with de-identified EHR data of over 99 million patients across 60 healthcare organizations was utilized. Groups were stratified by 30-year age groups. Patients aged 0-61+ with an ICD-10 diagnosis of EDS (76,526), the general platform populat

Characteristics and toxicology of adult deaths due to quetiapine toxicity in Australia, 2000-2024.

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic that has been associated with both intentional and unintentional deaths. We aimed to determine, stratified by intentionality: (1) The characteristics and circumstances of adult deaths attributed solely to quetiapine toxicity in Australia, 2000-2024; (2) The blood toxicology of cases for quetiapine and other drugs; and (3) The major autopsy findings for cardiovascular, lung, kidney, and liver disease. All cases of death aged ≥15 years attributed solely to quetiapine toxicity in Australia, 2000-2024, were retrieved from the National Coronial Information Sy

Chickenpox in Poland in 2023.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological situation of chickenpox in Poland has been stable in recent years, with no significant increase in the number of cases observed. Between 2016 and 2023, the incidence rate ranged from 389.4 to 506.2 cases per 100,000 population, except for 2020 and 2021, when the incidence rate decreased to 186.6 per 100,000 in 2020 and 151.1 per 100,000 in 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, an increase in the incidence rate was recorded, reaching 453.9 per 100,000. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the epidemiological situation of chickenpox in Poland in

Pertussis in Poland in 2022.

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiological situation of pertussis in Poland in 2022 was influenced by the cancellation of the COVID-19 epidemic and the introduction of an epidemic threat. Decisions related to the gradual easing of restrictions on social contacts and the abolition of the obligation to wear masks caused the number of pertussis cases to slowly start to increase. The most effective strategy for preventing pertussis remains the immunization of children in accordance with the National Immunization Program, and in the case of adults, vaccination repeated systematically every 10 years and immu

Identifying latent subgroups of primary head injury: an explorative latent class analysis on neuropathologically examined medico-legal autopsy cases.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant global health concern and frequently encountered in medico-legal autopsies. Previous studies suggest that certain TBI subtypes are more likely to co-occur than others. Therefore, we aimed to explore the potential of latent class analysis (LCA) to identify and characterize primary head injury combinations in neuropathologically examined medico-legal autopsy cases. The dataset comprised 78 cases from the Forensic Medicine Unit of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare over the period of 2016-2022. Data on background and circumstantial character

Patterns in paternal and maternal filicide: A comparative analysis of filicide cases in Turkey.

Filicide is the act of a parent killing their own offspring. Previous studies indicate that there are both commonalities and distinctions between filicides committed by mothers and fathers. The main objective of this study was to compare maternal and paternal filicide with a major focus on clinical and sociodemographic features of perpetrators, incident details, and victims. Filicide cases were examined at the bedded unit of the Expertise Department of Observation of the Council of Forensic Medicine that were referred by the Turkish Ministry of Justice. A total of 51 perpetrators and 57 victim

The Global, Regional, and National Burden of Tracheal, Bronchus, and Lung Cancer Caused by Smoking: An Analysis Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

Background: Smoking is the primary risk factor for tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer. Objective: This study aims to explore the epidemiological trends of smoking-attributable TBL cancer from 1990 to 2021. Methods: Mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) data for smoking-related TBL cancer from 1990 to 2021 were sourced from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021. Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to evaluate trends in age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) and age-standardized DALY rates (ASDRs). Additionally, the relationship between dis

Pediatric Emergency Department Visits Associated with Mental Health Conditions Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic - United States, January 2019-January 2022.

In 2021, a national emergency* for children's mental health was declared by several pediatric health organizations, and the U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory† on mental health among youths. These actions resulted from ongoing concerns about children's mental health in the United States, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic (1,2). During March-October 2020, among all emergency department (ED) visits, the proportion of mental health-related visits increased by 24% among U.S. children aged 5-11 years and 31% among adolescents aged 12-17 years, compared with 2019 (2). OBJECTIVE: To characterise the epidemiological patterns and the spatial-temporal distribution of schistosomiasis-related mortality in Brazil from 2003 to 2018. METHODS: A national population-based ecological study that used official data from the Mortality Information System. The data included all deaths recorded in Brazil from 2003 to 2018 in which schistosomiasis was mentioned in the death certificate as an underlying or associated cause of death (multiple causes). The municipalities of residence were used as units of geographic analysis, and standardised and smoothed mortality rates (per 1

Prevalence and incidence of bronchiectasis in Italy.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of the epidemiology of bronchiectasis is still affected by major limitations with very few data published worldwide. The aim of this study was to estimate the epidemiological burden of bronchiectasis in Italy in the adult population followed-up by primary care physicians. METHODS: This study analyzed data coming from a large primary care database with 1,054,376 subjects in the period of time 2002-2015. Patients with bronchiectasis were selected by the use of International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 9th revision, Clinical Modification codes (ICD-9-CM)

Mortality in a cohort of 3.1 million children, adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Many youth deaths occur in the first year of life, from prematurity and anomalies. Detailing mortality after age 1 year may differentially guide preventive strategies in children, adolescents and young adults. METHODS: A cohort study in Ontario, Canada comprised 3 139 698 children born from 1990 to 2016. Adjusted HR (aHR) for death between 1 and 24 years were generated, comparing demographic variables and parity. RESULTS: After a median of 13.7 years of follow-up, 6930 deaths occurred between ages 1 and 24 years (incidence rate 17.0 per 100 000 person-years), peaking at age 23 ye
