Management of Sleep Disorders in Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Review.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are defined as a group of disorders caused by changes in early brain development, resulting in behavioral and cognitive alterations in sensory and motor systems, speech, and language. NDDs affect approximately 1-2% of the general population. Up to 80% of children with NDDs are reported to have disrupted sleep; subsequent deleterious effects on daytime behaviors, cognition, growth, and overall development of the child are commonly reported. Examples of NDDs discussed in this review include autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Rett syndrome, Angelman synd…

Analysis of a model of gambiense sleeping sickness in humans and cattle.

Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) and Nagana in cattle, commonly called sleeping sickness, is caused by trypanosome protozoa transmitted by bites of infected tsetse flies. We present a deterministic model for the transmission of HAT caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense between human hosts, cattle hosts and tsetse flies. The model takes into account the growth of the tsetse fly, from its larval stage to the adult stage. Disease in the tsetse fly population is modeled by three compartments, and both the human and cattle populations are modeled by four compartments incorporating the two stage…

Simulating the elimination of sleeping sickness with an agent-based model.

Although Human African Trypanosomiasis is largely considered to be in the process of extinction today, the persistence of human and animal reservoirs, as well as the vector, necessitates a laborious elimination process. In this context, modeling could be an effective tool to evaluate the ability of different public health interventions to control the disease. Using the Cormas® system, we developed HATSim, an agent-based model capable of simulating the possible endemic evolutions of sleeping sickness and the ability of National Control Programs to eliminate the disease. This model takes into ac…

Sleep and mood disorders in women with dry eye disease.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate sleep and mood disorders in women aged 30-69 with dry eye disease (DED). All subjects underwent corneal examinations, with 890 completing a questionnaire regarding symptoms of DED and 213 completing both the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaires. Subjects were then divided into three groups based on age (younger [30-45 years], perimenopausal [46-55 years], and older [56-69 years]), and comparisons were made among groups in subjects with and without DED. PSQI scores were significantl…

Prevalence of snoring and the risk of sleep apnea in hospital staff.

BACKGROUND: Untreated Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) as a common breathing sleep disorder results in impaired work performance. The economic burden of untreated OSAS accounts for billions of dollars per year. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of snoring and the risk of OSAS in healthcare system staff. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 715 staff of Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital in 2012. The Berlin questionnaire was used to identify the prevalence of snoring and the risk of sleep apnea. Additional information, including demographic char…

Interest in Information about Nightmares in Patients with Sleep Disorders.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Despite the considerable prevalence of the nightmare disorder and its burden on the patient, nightmares are underdiagnosed and undertreated, even in sleep centers. METHODS: A total of 1,125 patients in a sleep center undergoing routine diagnostic procedures for their sleep disorders completed a questionnaire about nightmares. RESULTS: About 20% of the sample indicated an interest in more information about nightmare etiology and nightmare therapy-even patients who had never sought professional help previously. CONCLUSIONS: From a clinical viewpoint, health care professional…

[Metabolic syndrome and bipolar disorder: Is sleep the missing link?].

OBJECTIVE: To examine the pathophysiologic mechanisms that may link circadian disorder and metabolic syndrome in bipolar disorder (BP). METHOD: A systematic review of the literature was conducted from January 2013 to January 2015, using the Medline and Cochrane databases, using the keywords "metabolic syndrome", "obesity", "leptin" and "circadian disorders", "sleeping disorders" and cross-referencing them with "bipolar disorder". The following types of publications were candidates for review: (i) clinical trials; (ii) studies involving patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder; (iii) studies i…

[How to characterize and treat sleep complaints in bipolar disorders?].

OBJECTIVES: Sleep complaints are very common in bipolar disorders (BD) both during acute phases (manic and depressive episodes) and remission (about 80 % of patients with remitted BD have poor sleep quality). Sleep complaints during remission are of particular importance since they are associated with more mood relapses and worse outcomes. In this context, this review discusses the characterization and treatment of sleep complaints in BD. METHODS: We examined the international scientific literature in June 2016 and performed a literature search with PubMed electronic database using the follow…

Sleeping Beauty and the Story of the Bacille Calmette-Guérin Vaccine.

Mycobacterium bovis BCG is the only available vaccine for protection against tuberculosis (TB). While BCG protects children from severe dise … ficacy in a mouse model compared to that of VPM1002. BCG was first used in humans in 1921 and, like Sleeping Beauty pricked by the spinning wheel, we have slept for 100 years, showing a reluctance to invest in clinical development or in biomanufacturing capacity for TB vaccines. The advance of recombinant BCGs should awaken us from our sleep and call us …

The effect of room acoustics on the sleep quality of healthy sleepers.

INTRODUCTION: Noise is one of the factors that can seriously disturb sleep, and sound volume is an important factor in this context. One strategy involves avoiding exposure to sounds in the night, while entail the minimization of background noise in a bedroom. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of systematic sound attenuation on nocturnal sleep by influencing sound volume and reverberation within the context of room acoustics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On this basis, we designed a randomized, controlled crossover trial investigating 24 healthy sleepers (15 men and 9 women, aged…

Sleep problems and dissociation in preschool victims of sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with a host of deleterious impacts, yet little is known about the short-term correlates in children. This study aimed to investigate the association between dissociation and sleep problems in a sample of preschool-age sexual abuse victims while controlling for potentially confounding variables, including gender, age, polytrauma, CSA characteristics, and parental distress. METHOD: The sample consisted of 179 children (ages 3-6 years) and their non-offending parents. Parents completed questionnaires assessing their child's dissociative symptoms …

Processing speed and distractibility in multiple sclerosis: the role of sleep.

BACKGROUND: The effects of sleep disturbances on cognitive performance under distraction in multiple sclerosis (MS) are not known. The objective of the present study was to explore the association between an index of sleep (i.e. daytime somnolence), distractibility and the hallmark cognitive deficit in people with MS (i.e. processing speed). METHODS: MS participants (n=102) were recruited from outpatient neurology clinics. All participants completed the traditional Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT). In addition, half the sample (n=52) completed a computerized version with distracters (c-SDM…

A review of preventing central sleep apnea by inspired CO2.

Although almost completely unknown half a century ago, sleep disorders are gaining recognition as major issues to public health due to their growing prevalence and dire societal consequences. Despite being linked to several infamous catastrophic events such as Chernobyl, it is estimated that 90% of sufferers fail to get diagnosed and receive treatment, and a significant portion of the ones that do are often non-compliant due to the side effects of current treatments. This article presents a review of the current standard treatment for central sleep apnea, and investigates the advantages and po…

Sleep disordered breathing in pregnancy: the maternal and fetal implications.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) which includes obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), has emerged as a risk factor for adverse maternal-foetal outcomes in pregnancy. Physiological changes of pregnancy predispose a woman 'at risk' towards developing SDB. The increasing incidence of OSA in pregnancy closely correlates with the population trends of obesity. Common screening tools validated in non-pregnant subjects including Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) are poor predictors of SDB in pregnancy. Preeclampsia, gestational hypertens…
