Modafinil acquires reinforcing effects when combined with citalopram.

Modafinil (MOD) is a wakefulness promoter used to treat sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea. Its action mechanism consists in inhibiting dopamine (DAT) and norepinephrine (NET) transporters, but it has no affinity for the serotonin transporter (SERT). Modafinil's addictive potential is not yet clear, but one feature that differentiates it from potentially addictive drugs like cocaine revolves around affinity for SERT. The aims of the present study were to determine whether co-administration of MOD with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram (CIT) can i

Wake-up strokes are linked to obstructive sleep apnea and worse early functional outcome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Presence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a known risk factor for ischemic stroke. Additionally, SDB effects negatively on recovery after stroke. Up to one fourth of strokes are present on awakening. The link between OSA and wake-up stroke (WUS) has been suggested. We aim to determine the association between OSA and WUS in a Finnish stroke unit cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational prospective longitudinal study consisted of 95 TIA (transient ischemic attack) and mild to moderate stroke patients referred to a Str

[Sleeping sickness, a reemerging sickness].

Human African Trypanosomiasis (THA) has reappeared in most intertropical countries of Black Africa and an estimated 400,000 new cases are reported every year. Genetic tests which now make possible the differentiation of morphologically similar trypanosome subspecies showed that a large variety of game and domestic animals act as reservoir hosts of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, thus making it even more difficult to fight the disease. The detection of cases and their treatment are absolutely necessary in preventing the spread of the disease. This can only be carried out with mobile medical teams

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Hemodynamic Monitoring of Simulated Bruxism Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related and neuromuscular conditions affect the daily lives of individuals as they impact physical and cognitive well-being. While not classified as a disorder, bruxism has emerged as a prevalent condition characterized by involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching, occurring either during sleep or wakefulness. Often left unnoticed, this unconscious behavior can contribute to severe dental damage, facial muscle fatigue, and temporomandibular joint disorders. These consequences require early detection and intervention to prevent long-term complications. Traditionally, polyso

Restless senses, restless sleep: Exploring the sensory-sleep link in Phelan-McDermid syndrome. A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a rare genetic condition caused by SHANK3 gene haploinsufficiency. Individuals with PMS often exhibit developmental delays, language deficits, and neurological and psychiatric symptoms that frequently overlaps with autism. Sleep disturbances and sensory reactivity differences are also highly prevalent in this population, yet their relationship remains unexplored. Given prior research in autism, which has identified links between sensory sensitivities and sleep difficulties, this study aims to investigate the association between sensory processing d

Glymphatic system impairment in type II diabetes mellitus adults.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with multiple systemic complications, including cognitive decline and increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases. The glymphatic system, a brain waste-clearance pathway that can be impaired by sleep disturbances common in T2DM, has not yet been examined in the condition. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate glymphatic system in T2DM subjects using diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index. A total of 78 T2DM adults and 106 healthy controls underwent brain MRI. Sleep issues were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Qualit

Preoperative sleep disturbance and postoperative delirium in elderly joint replacement patients: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) represents a frequent complication among patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. While sleep disturbance is prevalent during the perioperative period, its relationship with POD has not been fully clarified. To this end, the present study was conducted to investigate the association between preoperative sleep disturbance and POD in elderly patients undergoing joint replacement. METHODS: This prospective cohort study recruited 200 patients undergoing elective knee or total hip replacement surgery between April 10th and July 15th, 2025, retrospecti

Restoring RCAN1 dosage mitigates sleep and EEG abnormalities in a Down syndrome model.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 60% of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have sleep abnormalities independent of breathing obstruction. Previously, we demonstrated increased wakefulness and decreased NREM sleep in the Dp(16)1Yey+ (Dp16) DS model mouse. In this study, we determined if increased RCAN1 levels mediate sleep disruption in Dp16 mice. METHODS: We examined sleep architecture and electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns in young and aged Dp16 mice in which we genetically restored disomic levels of Rcan1 (Dp16 Rcan12N, shortened to Dp16-2N). Approximately equal numbers of male and female mice w

Impact of psychosocial status on sleep quality in adolescents with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Adequate sleep is essential for neurodevelopment and immune regulation, yet adolescents with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) are at high risk for sleep disturbances. While these associations are well-documented in adults, data on the pediatric population remains limited. This study evaluated sleep quality in Indonesian adolescents with cSLE and examined its association with psychosocial distress. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 60 adolescents (aged 10-18 years) diagnosed with cSLE at a tertiary hospital in Bandung, Indonesia. Psychosocial status wa

Wearable Sleep Monitoring in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Associations With Subjective Sleep Ratings and Neurocognitive Functioning.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are associated with increased fatigue, reduced quality of life, and neurocognitive dysfunction and have emerged as a common complication among pediatric cancer survivors. Sleep disturbances are particularly concerning given their potential to exacerbate existing neurocognitive impacts of cancer treatments. This pilot study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a home-wearable EEG-based sleep device (Sleep ProfilerTM) for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors as well as associations between specific sleep parameters and neurocognitive functioning.

Occupational burnout during war: The role of stress, disruptions in routine, sleep, work-family conflict, and organizational support as a moderator.

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout, resulting from long-term exposure to work-related stressors, is a significant risk factor for both physical and mental health of employees. Most research on burnout focuses on routine situations, with less attention given to its causes and manifestations during prolonged national crises such as war. According to the Conservation of Resources theory, wartime conditions are associated with a loss of resources, leading to accelerated burnout. This study aimed to examine burnout among employees during the war in Israel that broke out in October 2023, placing the p
