The nine-year trajectory of suicidal ideation and its risk factors among people living with HIV in Hunan, China: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are at elevated risk of suicidal ideation (SI). However, evidence on SI risk factors remains fragmented, primarily derived from cross-sectional studies, and long-term changes in SI and its determinants are not well characterized. We aimed to describe the changes in SI among PLWHA over a 9-year follow-up period after HIV diagnosis and to explore the long-term risk factors for SI. METHODS: In this prospective, two-center cohort study in Changsha, China, 200 newly diagnosed PLWHA were consecutively recruited and followed at four time points: baselin

Self-Care Knowledge and Associated Factors Among Adult Patients With Colostomy in Northwest Amhara, Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Colostomy, a surgically necessary procedure, requires rigorous self-care to prevent complications and improve patients' quality of life. In Ethiopia, the rising demand for colostomies is met with a lack of localized data on patient self-care knowledge, leading to insufficient support and increased stoma-related complications and healthcare burdens. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess self-care knowledge and its associated factors among adult patients with colostomy in Northwest Amhara Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals, Ethiopia October-November 2024. METHODS: A hospital-base

Depression among pregnant teenagers receiving antenatal care from primary healthcare facilities in Mbarara city, Southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a serious mental health condition whose risk is highest among women during pregnancy. The risk is high among pregnant teenagers due to intertwined developmental, hormone-mediated physical and psychosocial changes of pregnancy, with significant negative impacts on the unborn baby and the mother. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression and associated factors among pregnant teenagers in Mbarara city, southwestern Uganda. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study where we enrolled pregnant teenagers (13-19 years) attending antenatal care at 4 selected

External resilience in the context of drug use and socio-structural vulnerabilities: a qualitative exploration among women who use drugs and sell sex in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Resilience is a commonly used construct in substance use and mental health research. Yet it is often narrowly defined by only its internal qualities (e.g., adaptability, hardiness) and overlooks its external qualities (e.g., supportive relationships, navigating one's environment). Further, substance use is often viewed as antithetical to resilience despite populations like women who use drugs and sell sex (WWUD-SS) surviving significant hardships. This study aims to fill a gap in the literature by characterizing external resilience among WWUD-SS and understanding the ways that soci

Social and medical needs of rare metabolic patients: results from a MetabERN survey.

BACKGROUND: Many surveys have been performed over the years to assess the medical and social requirements of patients with a rare disease, but no studies have focused specifically on patients in Europe or with an inherited metabolic disease (IMD). To obtain a comprehensive overview of the social and psychological status and needs of IMD patients, especially in Europe, the European Reference Network for Hereditary Metabolic Disorders (MetabERN) has performed a dedicated survey among its metabolic patients. RESULTS: A total of 924 patients and caregivers responded to the questionnaire. Most par

Health-related quality of life and associated factors in patients with myocardial infarction after returning to work: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Return to work following myocardial infarction (MI) represents an important indicator of recovery. However, MI can cause patients to feel pressure, loneliness and inferiority during work and even detachment from employment after returning to work, which may affect their quality of life. The aims of this study were to identify the influencing factors of Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with MI after returning to work and explore the correlations between these factors and HRQoL. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study. All participants were recruited from tertiary

The social side of personality: Do affiliation and intimacy motives moderate associations of personal relationships with well-being?

BACKGROUND: The quantity of social relationships and social interactions is positively related to well-being, but the underlying role of personality dispositions in these associations is unclear. The present study investigated whether social motives for affiliation and intimacy moderate associations of personal networks with well-being. METHOD: We analyzed data from N = 389 individuals living alone (aged 35-60 years) who provided self-reports of social motives and well-being, and who completed an ego-centered social network task. A subsample of N = 331 individuals participated in a social net

Social dysdecorum following severe traumatic brain injury: loss of implicit social knowledge or loss of control?

The purpose of the present study was to investigate two theoretical frameworks for understanding acquired deficits in social behavior in individuals with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent research has found that brain injury can lead to impairments in implicit processes including social cognition. Impairments in implicit social cognition have been recently advanced as an explanation for acquired social deficits, as implicit social cognition is hypothesized to mediate the processing and understanding of often subtle, nonverbal cues in social interactions. In contrast, the executive dy

A proposed model of the maintenance and exacerbation of body image and eating concerns in the context of problematic social network use.

Previous evidence supports the existence of a relationship between greater use of highly visual social media and heightened body image and eating concerns. However, to date, the role of problematic social network use has not been articulated in relation to these outcomes and the multiple dynamics underlying these associations need to be further conceptualized. Moreover, models of the exacerbation and maintenance of these body image concerns are lacking, and little attention has been paid to state-level predictors and maintenance factors. The aim of this position paper is to propose model of th

Family burden in long-term diseases: a comparative study in schizophrenia vs. physical disorders.

This study explored burden and social networks in families of patients with schizophrenia or a long-term physical disease. It was carried out in 169 specialised units (mental health department, and units for the treatment of chronic heart, brain, diabetes, kidney, lung diseases) recruited in 30 randomly selected geographic areas of Italy. The study sample consisted of 709 key relatives of patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia and 646 key relatives of patients with physical diseases. Each relative was asked to fill in the Family Problems Questionnaire (FPQ) and the Social Network Qu

Navigating crisis: a qualitative exploration of medical social workers' responses to ethical issues during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Medical social workers' (MedSWs) roles and responsibilities expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. They experienced larger caseloads, restrictive protocols, new policies, and work outside of their professional scope, despite limited access to resources, support, or hazard compensation. As a result, MedSWs faced complex ethical situations, which they had to address in accordance with the profession's guiding principles. METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 54 MedSWs about their professional experiences during the pandemic and used the National Associati

Impact of transition in work status and social participation on cognitive performance among elderly in India.

INTRODUCTION: Transition to the oldage marks a change in work and social participation. Socio-economic and physical conditions arising from this change pose a risk for cognitive outcomes among the elderly. Gender shows different pathways to deal with the pattern of participation and to maintain cognitive health. In India, work participation in the oldage is an outcome of financial deprivations and lack of support. At the same time, alterations in social interactions can induce stress and precipitate cognitive decline in oldage. A dearth of studies in this domain motivates us to estimate the ef

[The lived meaning of becoming homeless and subsequently obtaining housing: A qualitative study of individuals with long-term experiences of homelessness].

Objective Homelessness has a profound impact on health and is often framed as an extreme form of social exclusion. In Japan, policies and support programs have promoted stable housing as a pathway to independence, contributing to a marked decline in the number of individuals experiencing homelessness. Nevertheless, the homeless population has aged, and homelessness has become prolonged; among this population, the avoidance of support services and return to street homelessness remain notable challenges. While previous studies have emphasized structural factors and formal outcomes, such as facil

The experiences of hospital social workers who care for homeless patients: an interpretive phenomenological analysis.

Unique challenges exist for hospital social workers tasked with the care of patients experiencing homelessness. These challenges affect patient care, impact social work practice, and emphasize the need to better understand the experience of providing services to this vulnerable population. Research is limited and focuses upon the experiences of unhoused patients and of medical management, not upon the experiences of the social workers positioned to meaningfully impact care. To address this gap, the current study utilized Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to examine the lived experie

The factor structure of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) are two compendium measures that have become some of the most popular self-report scales of social anxiety. Despite their popularity, it remains unclear whether it is necessary to maintain two separate scales of social anxiety. The primary objective of the present study was to examine the factor analytic structure of both measures to determine the factorial validity of each scale. For this purpose, we administered both scales to 577 patients at the beginning of outpatient treatment. Analyzing both scales simultaneous

Psychometric evaluation of the Social Interaction Phobia Scale.

The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of a novel measure of social anxiety symptoms, the Social Interaction Phobia Scale (SIPS), as a stand-alone item set, using an undergraduate sample (N=512). The 14-item SIPS has three subscales assessing Social Interaction Anxiety, Fear of Overt Evaluation, and Fear of Attracting Attention. Confirmatory factor analyses replicated the three-factor structure for the SIPS originally reported by Carleton et al. All SIPS scores demonstrated good internal consistency. The convergent validity of the SIPS was supported by strong and positive corr

Predicting sleep disorder trajectories in older patients with chronic pain: an explainable machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders exhibit a high prevalence among chronic pain (CP) patients, yet knowledge gaps regarding sleep disorder trajectories in older CP patients may hinder healthy aging. This study aimed to identify sleep disorder trajectories and their predictive factors, and to develop tools for predicting these trajectories using an explainable machine learning (XML) approach. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted in hospitalized older adults (aged ≥ 60 years) with chronic pain.
