Chromatographic selectivity and position specificity were examined by using deletion and substitution analogues of calcitonin (CT), a 32-amino acid polypeptide. The biological activity of CT has been shown to be related to structural features, including a regular spacing of hydrophobic and hydrophilic residues in positions 8-22. A patient with established retrobulbar neuritis and Uhthoff's phenomenon who claimed that his visual acuity improved after drinking beer was assessed by detailed quantitative psychophysical tests. Studies of electrophysiological responses and biochemical levels of blood serum before and after drinking on several occasions were also made. The results of tests of contrast sensitivity, spectral sensitivity, flicker sensitivity, and visually evoked potential confirmed his observation. Some mechanisms for this phenomenon are considered.

Bis-(5-sulphosalicylato)-diaquo chelates of VO(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(II) and Mn(II) exerted antifungal activities. The chelates have been characterised for elemental, thermal and infra-red spectral studies and were found to be more fungicidal than the chelating agent. The antifungal activity was found to be in the order: Cu(II) congruent to Ni(II) greater than Co(II) greater than Fe(II) greater than Mn(II) greater than VO(II).

A method for the determination of proquazone and its m-hydroxy metabolite in serum and urine by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is described. Chlorpromazine, 2-chloro-N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)phenothiazine (CPZ), is a frequently prescribed antipsychotic drug that causes cutaneous photosensitivity in man. Normal therapeutic dosages of aminoglycosides can cause hypomagnesemia in more than one-third of patients. Hypomagnesemia occurs early in therapy, results in renal Mg++ wasting and may produce hypocalcemia and hypokalemia. Patients who are NPO, eating poorly or not receiving supplemental Mg++ are at high risk for hypomagnesemia. Hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia and hypokalemia respond to Mg++ replacement therapy. We recommend serial monitoring of serum Mg++ levels in patients receiving aminoglycoside therapy.

Effective treatment of cyanide poisoning requires rapid diagnosis, good supportive treatment and the use of a specific antidote. The currently available antidotes offer demonstrated efficacy along with significant potential adverse side effects. We have investigated an alternate approach to antidote therapy for cyanide poisoning by using Stroma-Free Methemoglobin Solution ( SFMS ). A Cary, Model 118, spectrophotometer was used to measure spectral absorbence by the human lens capsule of wavelengths 200 nm to 400 nm. The lens capsule transmits greater than 90% of the incident UV light, and thus does not appear to provide significant protection for the retina from UV radiation. This suggests that the lower incidence of aphakic cystoid macula edema in the eye with an intact posterior capsule is not related to UV light absorption by the lens capsule.
