The necropsy records of 65 elk ranging from 1 day to 13(1/2) years of age were reviewed to determine the primary cause of death of each animal. The animal carcasses were submitted from 22 separate Pennsylvania elk farms over an approximately 8-year period. The most common causes of mortality in animals in which the cause of death was determined were gastrointestinal parasitism (21 cases), pneumonia (7 cases), enterocolitis (5 cases), malnutrition (5 cases), and rumenitis/acidosis (5 cases). The cause of death was undetermined in 4 of the 65 elk. Nematode organisms (20 cases) were the primary p

Lysins represent a novel class of anti-infectives derived from bacteriophage. Lysins are bacterial cell-wall hydrolytic enzymes that selecti … reus, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, and penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae. Lysins can eliminate bacteria systemically and topically from mucosal surfaces and biofilms, as evidenced by experimental models of sepsis, endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, and nasopharyngeal, skin and vaginal decolonization. Furthermore, lysin …

OBJECTIVE: To document the pattern and sequelae of invasive pneumococcal infection in hospitalized children.
METHODOLOGY: Retrospective review of Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) isolates from normally sterile sites from 1981 to 1992 at three paediatric centres in Sydney for demographic data, spectrum of disease, predisposing conditions, mortality, and sequelae from meningitis.
RESULTS: Four hundred and thirty-one episodes in 417 patients were identified. Foci of infection were: meningitis, 34%; pneumonia, 29%; bacteraemia without apparent focus, 30%; and other foci, 7%. Sixty-one per cent of a…

Necrotizing pneumonia (NP) represents an uncommon but severe complication of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children, characterized b … language original research articles, systematic reviews, and case series with at least 10 patients. Streptococcus pneumoniae continues to dominate as the primary pathogen, accounting for 30-60% of cases, though the emergence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae as a major cause in Asia, with macrolide resistance exceeding 85%, presents new therapeutic challenges. INTRODUCTION: Pneumonia is a leading cause of death for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), who also have increas … orts (2) and one RCT pilot (1). Six studies reported oral carriage of respiratory pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Two studies reported predictive relationships between oral pathogens and pneumonia, with increased odds of respiratory illness associated with positive PCR results for specific pathogens (OR 9.0, 95 …

Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children. The objectives were to evaluate the microbiological agents linked with hypoxemia in hos … ive of hypoxemia (positive likelihood ratios = 2.3 and 2.4, respectively). Predictors of death were Streptococcus pneumoniae detection by blood PCR (crude hazard ratio [cHR] = 4.6, 95% CI = 1.5-14.0), procalcitonin ≥ 50 ng/mL (cHR = 22.4, 95% CI = 7.3-68.5) and hypoxemia (cHR = 4.8, 95% CI = 1.6-14.4). These findings were consistent on bivariate analysis. hMPV and RSV in …

METHODS: This multicenter prospec … confirmed pneumonia. Twenty of the 24 patients who died had pneumonia of the following etiologies: Streptococcus pneumoniae (12.3%); Staphylococcus aureus (10.9%), including methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) 3.3%; Enterobacteriaceae (8.1%); and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3.3%). Of the adult patients, 151 were classified as having community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and 6 …

In order to counter the antibiotic resistance phenomenon, a prudent and rational use of antimicrobials should be driven by an accurate clinical diagnosis and, when possible, by the isolation of the etiological agent followed by susceptibility testing, with the aim to select the most suitable molecule for therapy. Cow mastitis is considered the main cause of antibiotic use in the cattle breeding sector. The purpose of this study was to compare the broth microdilution (BMD) method performed with Sensititre Custom Plates and the agar disk diffusion (ADD) method in determining antimicrobial suscep

Beta-hemolytic streptococci are common bacterial pathogens that can cause serious invasive disease, and although this group of species has r … only had mutations in parC. The increasing rate of fluoroquinolone-resistant streptococci including Streptococcus pneumoniae, viridans group streptococci, and the more recently reported beta-hemolytic streptococci, is becoming a clinical concern due to the morbidity and mortality caused by these pathogens.

Here, we use Streptococcus pneumoniae as a model system to address this question. Competence T4P likely bind to DNA via a tip-associated complex of proteins called minor pilins, and recent work highlights a high degree of structural conservation between the minor pilin tip complexes of …

Peptidase-containing ABC transporters (PCATs) are a widely distributed family of transporters which secrete double-glycine (GG) peptides. In the opportunistic pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), the PCATs ComAB and BlpAB have been shown to secrete quorum-sensing pheromones and bacteriocins related to the competence and pneumocin pathways. Here, we describe another pneumococcal PCAT, RtgAB, encoded by the rtg locus and found intact in 17% of strains. The Rgg/SHP-like quorum-sensing system RtgR/S, which uses a peptide pheromone with a distinctive Trp-X-Trp motif, regulates expressi…

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory tract infections such as acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB), acute otitis media (AOM), and acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS) account for approximately 75% of antibiotic prescriptions written and are among the leading reasons for physician office visits in the United States. Resistance of the predominant pathogens in respiratory tract infections (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis) to available antibiotics has led clinicians to reevaluate the diagnosis and management of these infections.
OBJECTIVE: The pur…

BACKGROUND: Bacterial mucosal immunotherapy has shown protection of children and adults from both viral and bacterial respiratory infections, offering the potential to reduce antimicrobial use, and hence also control antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Pneumococcal carriage of vaccine type Streptococcus pneumoniae remains high in Malawi despite infant conjugate vaccination and AMR is increasing. We compared nasal inflammation following sublingual bacterial immunotherapy including S. pneumoniae (MV130, Inmunotek, Spain) or placebo and determined the effect in an experimental human pneumococcal carr…

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of lower respiratory infections, especially in children under 5 years old. While pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have reduced disease burden in many countries, data from low- and middle-income countries are still limited. The objective of this prospective, hospital-based, cross -sectional study was to measure the prevalence of pneumococcal colonization and identify circulating serotypes among children <5 years and their caregivers in Cambodia and India.
METHODS: Children aged 0-59 months free of severe respiratory infection accord…
