Posttraumatic stress disorder among survivors of Cambodian concentration camps.

Thirteen Cambodian refugees who had survived 2-4 years of concentration camp experience met the DSM-III criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder. Their predominant symptoms were avoidance, hyperactive startle reactions, emotional numbness, intrusive thoughts, and nightmares, which had lasted at least 3 years after the imprisonment. The patients' avoidance of thoughts or discussion of the past and the shame they felt about Cambodia's history made diagnosis and treatment difficult. These findings give cross-cultural validation to the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder and should alert

The role of site and severity of injury as predictors of mental health outcomes following traumatic injury.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of injury site and severity as predictors of mental health outcomes in the initial 12 months following traumatic injury. Using a multisite, longitudinal study, participants with a traumatic physical injury (N = 1,098) were assessed during hospital admission and followed up at 3 months (N = 932, 86%) and at 12 months (N = 715, 71%). Injury site was measured using the Abbreviated Injury Scale 90, and objective injury severity was measured using the Injury Severity Score. Participants also completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale a

Traumatic Experiences and PTSD Symptoms in the Chinese Male Intrafamilial Physical Violence Perpetrators: A Comparative and Structural Equation Modeling Study.

We aimed to compare traumatic experiences among the groups of perpetrators with or without violent pedigree, and establish a structural model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms as mediators of traumatic experiences and severe intrafamilial physical violence among Chinese male perpetrators. A cross-sectional survey and a face-to-face interview were conducted to examine intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and violent pedigree, childhood maltreatment, other traumatic events, PTSD symptoms, and severe intrafamilial physical violence in a community sample of 229 abusive men a

The age of trauma: the prevalence and psychological impact of potentially traumatic exposures in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTE) is associated with a range of negative mental health outcomes, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD). Although exposure to PTEs is highly prevalent, and their impact on mental health is pervasive, research is mostly limited to diagnosed populations or specific trauma cohorts in the post-pandemic era. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of 1,000 Seoul residents from October 6-12, 2023, using a stratified sampling method. Participants were asked about their traumatic experiences, mental health outco

The power of imagery: examining the prevalence of imagination-based hotspots after a traumatic event in the Grenfell Health and Wellbeing Service.

BACKGROUND: Intrusive re-experiencing of traumatic events is a cornerstone of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Clinicians notice that clients also experience intrusive mental images of what they think might happen during a traumatic event. As mental imagery has a powerful impact on emotion, imagination-based imagery may be implicated in the peaks of distress ('hotspots') during a trauma. AIMS: A data-only study was undertaken of cognitive therapy for PTSD 'hotspot' charts used by Grenfell Health and Wellbeing Service clinicians after the Grenfell fire disaster. The aim was to establish

Brain activation during script-driven imagery induced dissociative responses in PTSD: a functional magnetic resonance imaging investigation.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to examine the neuronal circuitry underlying dissociative responses to traumatic script-driven imagery in sexual-abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Pilot studies in our laboratory have shown that PTSD patients had very different responses to traumatic script-driven imagery. Approximately 70% of patients relived their traumatic experience and showed an increase in heart rate while recalling the traumatic memory. The other 30% of patients had a dissociative response with no concomitant increase in heart rate. This article focuses on the lat

Patient Attribution of Posttraumatic Symptoms to Brain Injury Versus PTSD in Military-Related Mild TBI.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent cognitive, somatic, and neuropsychiatric symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) are influenced by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly in military patients. The authors evaluated the degree to which military service members with a history of mild TBI attributed posttraumatic symptoms to TBI versus PTSD. METHODS: Service members (N=372) with mild TBI were surveyed about the severity of posttraumatic symptoms across four symptom clusters (cognitive, affective, somatosensory, and vestibular) with the Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI). Problem gambling and anxiety disorders in the general swedish population - a case control study.

Co-occurring psychiatric comorbidity is high among problem gamblers, and anxiety disorders has repeatedly been linked to problem gambling. Less conclusive, however, is the association between problem gambling and specific anxiety disorders. The aim of this study is to examine the association between problem gambling and specific anxiety disorders in subgroups of gender, age and socio-economic status (SES) in the general Swedish population. A case-control design was employed - nested in the Swedish longitudinal gambling study cohort. All anxiety disorders studied - Panic Disorder, Social Phobia

Dissociative disorders in acute psychiatric inpatients in Taiwan.

Dissociative disorders have been documented to be common psychiatric disorders which can be detected reliably with standardized diagnostic instruments in North American and European psychiatric inpatients and outpatients (20.6% and 18.4%, respectively). However, there are concerns about their cross-cultural manifestations as an apparently low prevalence rate has been reported in East Asian inpatients and outpatients (1.7% and 4.9%, respectively). It is unknown whether the clinical profile of dissociative disorders in terms of their core symptomatic clusters, associated comorbid disorders, and

Functional and psychiatric vestibular disorders.

Behavioral factors have long been recognized as affecting spatial orientation and balance function. Neuroanatomic and neurophysiologic studies conducted worldwide over the last 30 years have substantially advanced our knowledge about the inherently strong connectivity among threat/anxiety, vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems in the brain. Clinical investigations have shed greater light on the nature of functional and psychiatric disorders that manifest or magnify vestibular morbidity. Concepts of these syndromes have changed over 150 years. Even their nomenclature has had different m

Return-to-work in patients with acquired brain injury and psychiatric disorders as a comorbidity: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between psychiatric disorders as a comorbidity and return-to-work (RTW) in individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). METHODS: A systematic review was performed. The search strategy (2002-2012) contained terms related to ABI, psychiatric comorbidity and keywords adapted to the outcome measure RTW. Selection and review were performed by two authors independently. In the case of uncertainty, a third author was consulted to reach consensus on inclusion or exclusion. The methodological quality of included studies was determined and evidence was classified.

Prevalence, characteristics and comorbidities of anxiety disorders in France: results from the "Mental Health in General Population" survey (MHGP).

PURPOSE: Only a few European countries have carried out large, community-based, national surveys about psychiatric morbidity. Here is presented the first national French survey, aiming to estimate the prevalence of anxiety disorders and associated comorbidities according to sociodemographic characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Mental Health in General Population (MHGP) database is derived from a representative national survey of the French adult population (n=36,105), conducted between 1999 and 2003. Data collection was done using an anonymous face-to-face interview. The presence of an

Kefir enhances stress resilience and mitigates PTSD-related behavioral and hematological changes in mice.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex psychiatric condition characterized by behavioral, cognitive, immunological, and neurochemical disturbances following traumatic experiences. Despite various therapeutic approaches, effective long-term treatments remain limited, highlighting the need for preventive strategies that enhance stress resilience. In this study, we evaluated the impact of long-term kefir consumption on behavioral, hematological, and biochemical parameters in a mouse model displaying some PTSD-like features, particularly fear- and anxiety-related behaviors induced by a

Maladaptation diseases as disorders of intraorganismal individuation.

The present work introduces the hypothesis that various human maladaptation diseases including addiction, cancer, autoimmunity, fibrosis, depression, chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder share a universal functional pattern in that they are caused by defects in goal state integration of physiological subsystems into whole-organism goal states and by the resulting emergence of new levels of individuality within the organism. In this framework, a general mechanism in ontogenetic maladaptation is the intraorganismal individuation of subsystems via physiological adaptation mechanisms, w

Current Status of Mental Health in Mexico City.

There is limited information on the prevalence of mental health symptoms among the population of Mexico City. To provide an update and determine the prevalence of symptoms associated with various disorders in the city, a modified version of the "Screener Questionnaire" was used, the same instrument employed in the National Survey on Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use (ENCODAT) 2016-2017. Data were collected at PILARES centers in different boroughs of Mexico City. A total of 868 questionnaires on symptoms of psychiatric disorders and the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco were completed. The most f

Metabotropic glutamate receptors and cognition: From underlying plasticity and neuroprotection to cognitive disorders and therapeutic targets.

Metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors are G protein-coupled receptors that play pivotal roles in mediating the activity of neurons and other cell types within the brain, communication between cell types, synaptic plasticity, and gene expression. As such, these receptors play an important role in a number of cognitive processes. In this chapter, we discuss the role of mGlu receptors in various forms of cognition and their underlying physiology, with an emphasis on cognitive dysfunction. Specifically, we highlight evidence that links mGlu physiology to cognitive dysfunction across brain disord

Cardiac troponin T elevation associated with transient global amnesia: another differential diagnosis of 'troponosis'.

Elevated cardiac troponin (cTn) levels can be detected in a variety of diseases with or without signs of myocardial ischaemia. Acute neurological disorders such as subarachnoid haemorrhage, stroke, transient ischaemic attack, epileptic seizures, and traumatic head injury can cause cTn elevation with and without myocardial wall motion abnormalities. We report a case of transient global amnesia with elevation and dynamic rise of highly sensitive troponin T (hsTnT) without clinical symptoms or signs of ischaemia. Cardiac work up was otherwise normal, with no signs of atherosclerotic coronary arte

Job strain, rank, and mental health in the UK Armed Forces.

We assessed whether job demand and job control have independent effects on psychological symptoms or whether job control modifies effect of job demand; we also assessed whether rank modified associations between job strain and psychological symptoms. We used the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist (PCL-C), General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12), Chalder Fatigue Scale, a checklist of 53 physical symptoms, and the WHO's Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Job control, job demand, and rank were independently associated with PTSD, common mental disorders, multiple phys
