Mitochondrial reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) is a key intermediate in energy metabolism in the heart, which can be qualitatively monitored using nondestructive surface fluorescence techniques. Iron metabolism in the Belgrade rat was examined in the intact animal and in the reticulocyte suspensions. The plasma iron turnover was increased. However, when allowance was made for the effect of the elevated plasma iron concentration, erythroid marrow capacity for iron uptake was at basal levels. Suspensions of washed human red blood cells were treated with nine synthetic putative metabolic derivatives of primaquine (PQ'), and their individual effects on activity of the hexose monophosphate shunt (HMS) were quantitated by radiometric analysis of 14CO2 from [14C] glucose. For the detection of cancerous and precancerous lesions in cervical cytopathology, the feasibility of a concanavalin A-peroxidase labeling procedure was tested and compared with the Papanicolaou method. To this end, the percentage of labeled flattened epithelial cells with a morphologically normal appearance present in cervical cell suspensions was determined. A sensitive new method to assay bleomycin (BLM) metabolism was developed using an ion-paired, reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography technique in conjunction with fluorescence detection that allowed levels of BLM less than 20 ng/ml to be detected. Single-cell suspensions of Nocardia caviae 112 were injected into normal, athymic, and asplenic mice by several different routes. Axillary lymph nodes obtained from 37 patients with cancer of the breast were used in a microcytotoxicity assay against a human mammary cancer cell line, ALAB.
