PURPOSE: Use of endorectal ultrasonography in preoperative evaluation of a presacral lesion is demonstrated.
METHOD: The natural history, presentation, evaluation, and treatment of presacral lesions in adult patients are presented. The case of a female patient with a presacral carcinoid tumor is presented and discussed.

Cholesterolosis is difficult to detect preoperatively. Ultrasonography can reveal it as polypoid densities usually without shadows. Cholecystography reveals cholesterolosis as contrast medium defects attached to the gallbladder wall. In our material of 27 patients with cholesterolosis (operatively verified cases) ultrasonography was superior to cholecystography in detecting cholesterolosis.

Owing to the advances in ultrasound, there are increasing reports of intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (IPSS) diagnosis in utero. However, few neonatal cases of IPSS diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography screening at birth have been reported. This case demonstrated abdominal ultrasonography at birth was useful for the early detection of congenital IPSS.

Ultrasonography is rapidly replacing radiological techniques of gallbladder investigation. While ultrasonography is highly accurate, there are technical, anatomical and diagnostic pitfalls which will trap the unwary. This presentation highlights the pitfalls which we have encountered, reviews the literature in this area and suggests techniques whereby these pitfalls may be avoided.

87 patients with pulmonary space-occupied lesions of the peripheral type which were either adhesive or close to pleura were examined using ultrasonography. Of them, 64 cases of lung cancers and 23 of benign lesions were then confirmed by histopathology. We measured the cervical length of 166 normal, gravid patients between 8 and 37 weeks' gestation by vaginal ultrasonography. Patients were assigned to one of five groups according to gestational age at the time of the measurements. Cervical length was longest (48 mm) in group 3 (20 to 25 weeks) and significantly longer than that of groups 1 (8 to 13 weeks), 2 (14 to 19 weeks), and 5 (32 to 37 weeks). We conducted this study to test the hypothesis that transvaginal ultrasonography and color Doppler imaging of the uterine arteries are complementary methods in the assessment of patients with postmenopausal bleeding.
