Long-term recordings of the compound action potential of the acoustic nerve of young, pigmented guinea pigs were carried out by two different techniques of implantation. The electrodes were inserted either by way of the mastoid process into the bony recess above the round window or they were introduced into the facial canal via the stylomastoid foramen. Before and after each implantation, special tests (Preyer-reflex, otoscopy, impedance audiometry) were performed for preliminary selection of the animals and to discover postoperative induced disturbances of sound conduction in the middle ear.

The sensitivity prediction from the acoustic reflex (SPAR) test was administered to 90 subjects who were classified according to four levels of mental retardation and five levels of hearing sensitivity. SPAR results showed accurate hearing level prediction for 58% of the subjects, one-category errors for 29%, and two- or three-category errors for 13%. This review describes the current role and potential future applications of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) for the management of heart failure (HF). CMR allows noninvasive morphologic and functional assessment, tissue characterization, blood flow, and perfusion evaluation. CMR overcomes echocardiography limitations (geometric assumptions, interobserver variability and poor acoustic window) and provides incremental information in relation to cause, prognosis, and treatment monitoring of patients with HF.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of Legionella pneumonia with unusual neurologic involvement.
INTERVENTION: Chest X-ray, lumbar puncture, magnetic imaging of the brain, electroencephalography, audiometry, brainstem acoustic evoked potentials and institution of oral antibiotics and steroids.
MAIN RESULT: Gradual clinical improvement of neurologic and pulmonary illness within 4 weeks.
CONCLUSION: Legionellosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of neurologic involvement in the setting of pneumonia.

According to the author, the assumption is made that in Ménière's disease, compensation should be paid in acoustic trauma cases. Ménière's disease is an aftereffect of noise exposure, even if the time lapse exceeds 10 years. A historical review of existing literature (from 1872 to 1958) shows no convincing evidence of this matter. Ten patients were chosen at random. All were exposed to noise and presented with vestibular dysfunction at a certain time.
