Many enzymes are active at interfaces in the living world (such as in the signaling processes at the surface of cell membranes, digestion of dietary lipids, starch and cellulose degradation, etc.), but fundamental enzymology remains largely focused on the interactions between enzymes and soluble substrates. The biochemical and kinetic characterization of lipolytic enzymes has opened up new paths of research in the field of interfacial enzymology. Lipases are water-soluble enzymes hydrolyzing insoluble triglyceride substrates, and studies on these enzymes have led to the development of specific

Zinc adsorption was studied in the soils of three nuclear power plant sites of India. 65Zn was used as a radiotracer to study the sorption characteristics of Zn(II). The sorption of zinc was determined at 25 and 45 degrees C at pH 7.8+/-0.2 in the solution of 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2 as supporting electrolyte. The sorption data was tested both in Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms and could be described satisfactorily. The effect of organic matter and other physico-chemical properties on the uptake of zinc was also studied in all the soil samples. The results showed that the cation exchange capacity, or

The effect of the immobilization procedure on the conformation of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) was investigated by recording the fluorescence spectra of native and immobilized AGP. A 20-nm red shift was obtained for the immobilized form of AGP compared with the emission maximum of 338 nm obtained for native AGP. This demonstrates that the tryptophan residues are exposed on the protein surface after immobilization, indicating that the immobilized form of AGP has a more unfolded structure than the native AGP. The effect of N,N-dimethyloctylamine on the enantioselectivity for some fentiazine d

Many factors can influence the elicitation of hypersensitivity reactions in guinea pigs and humans. The effect which the vehicle might have on the test response in guinea pigs sensitized with various acrylic compounds, using the "guinea pig maximization test", has been investigated. A marked decrease in the number of positive animals was seen when acetone was used as test vehicle, compared to petrolatum. The same result was seen with alcohol as vehicle, when neopentyl glycol diacrylate (NPGDA) was used as an acrylic monomer model. The patch test locations on the guinea pig flank, also affected

Selective recovery of Pd(II) from complex metallurgical wastewater is critical for mitigating metal pollution and realizing circular utilization of scarce precious-metal resources. Pristine covalent organic framework (COF) skeletons exhibit limited Pd(II) selectivity, while powdery COF adsorbents suffer from poor solid-liquid separability, restricting their practical application in wastewater treatment. Herein, an amidoxime-modified TpDB-AO with N-O diatomic synergistic chelating sites was fabricated via post-synthetic functionalization. This material can form stable five-membered chelate ring

Sticky deposits hinder the recycling of waste paper by causing equipment clogging and poor paper quality. Enzymatic degradation is constrained by poor enzyme stability and limited degradation capacity. Herein, Humicola insolens cutinase and Archeoglobus fulgidus carboxylesterase, were selected to construct a cellulosome-based complex (namely HACOM) to enhance the binding and degradation of sticky deposits and the stability of enzymes. Computational analysis and protein adsorption experiments revealed that the carbohydrate-binding module could interact with the substrate poly (vinyl acetate) (P

Although biochar has been widely applied for chromium (Cr)-contaminated soil remediation, its direct mixing with soil is limited by poor recoverability and insufficient long-term stability, while the role of groundwater table fluctuation (GTF) is often overlooked. In this study, we developed a biochar tubule-based strategy using Fe, Mg, and Al dual-modified sludge biochar (SBC) for Cr immobilization, and evaluated its performance, mechanisms, and engineering potential under GTF conditions. The demonstrated that modification substantially improved the microstructure and surface chemical propert

Effective, low-cost water treatment approaches are needed to address increasing heavy metal contamination, particularly in the developing world. This study evaluates the use of fly ash, a waste byproduct from coal combustion, as a sustainable adsorbent to remove cadmium (Cd2+), cobalt (Co2+), and lead (Pb2+) from aqueous solutions. Two types of fly ash sourced from different power plants in the southeastern United States were evaluated in this study: Belews Creek fly ash (BFA), which was untreated, and Wateree Station fly ash (WFA), which was processed using a proprietary carbon burnout method

CO2 conversion to value-added fuels and chemicals under photocatalytic conversion is a sustainable solution towards reducing the increasing carbon emission in the atmosphere as well as aiding in clean energy production. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), which are comprised of transition-metal nodes and multifunctional organic linkers have been found to be highly promising photocatalysts in CO2 reduction as they have a high surface area, structural, and CO2 adsorption capacity. Their photoresponsive property, caused by the transfer of the ligand-to-metal charge, or metal-oxo cluster excitation p

Accurate adsorption isotherms in liquid chromatography require an operational definition of the mobile-stationary phase boundary, which is commonly embedded in the hold-up (void) volume. In the minor-disturbance method (MDM), the corresponding thermodynamic void volume Vth is often interpreted as a substitute for the true liquid volume; however, in reversed-phase systems Vth can depend on the probe adsorbate, implying an underlying reference-state ambiguity. Here we investigate the physical meaning of Vth in reversed-phase liquid chromatography by applying MDM to methanol (MeOH), acetonitri

Research on microplastics (MPs) has focused on adsorption, while largely ignoring desorption as a route for releasing sequestered organics into aquatic systems. This study examined the desorption of organic carbon from virgin and preloaded microplastics using model oxygenated organic chemicals (ethanol, acetonitrile, and acetone) and a temperature range of 25-55 °C, together with a separate open-vessel boiling experiment at 100 °C, to evaluate their influence on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release. The results showed that dissolved organic carbon concentrations increased rapidly during the

Waste biomass can serve as a feedstock to produce functionalized biochars (BCs) for phosphate removal. However, their sorption performance depends on feedstock properties, pyrolysis conditions, and modification strategy. This study compared BCs produced from tomato plant residues (Solanum lycopersicum L.; T) and shea nut shells (Vitellaria paradoxa; VP), pyrolyzed at 400 and 500 °C and modified with iron (Fe) or diatomite (DT). Their physicochemical and structural properties and phosphate sorption capacity were evaluated in a model solution and selected real wastewater matrices. Exploratory va

Fabricating membranes that can remove CO2 from a gaseous mixture has eluded scientists for a long time. The problem is highly important in view of global warming, with CO2 being the main culprit. Novel alucone-amine hybrid (AAH) membranes with extremely high selectivity of CO2 from its mixture with CH4 were fabricated using 1,6 hexane diamine (HDA) and triethyl aluminum (TEA). This was accomplished by, first, engineering the mesopores of a porous support alumina disk to small and uniform nanopores by boehmite sol spin coatings and, then, functionalizing the membranes with an alucone-amine hybr

Schwertmannite and jarosite are naturally occurring iron (Fe) oxyhydroxysulfates with strong sorption capacities for hexavalent uranium [U(VI)] in various acidic sulfate-rich environments. These metastable minerals commonly undergo recrystallization, particularly in the presence of dissolved Fe2+ [Fe(II)aq], which may influence the fate of associated U(VI). Here, we quantified molecular-level changes in U repartitioning and speciation when U(VI)-sorbed schwertmannite and jarosite reacted with Fe(II)aq under near-neutral and anaerobic conditions over 2 weeks. The results show that Fe(II)aq addi

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising liquid biopsy biomarkers, but their practical use is limited by isolation methods that are labor-intensive, costly, or susceptible to nonspecific protein co-isolation. Here, we report surface-engineered gelatin microspheres (GMs) functionalized with heparin (Hep) and methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG) for affinity-based EV enrichment with reduced background protein adsorption. Structural and interfacial characterization confirmed successful functionalization and tunable surface properties. Quantitative optimization identified mPEG2000/Hep-GMs as the p

Biomass-derived porous biochars perform exceptionally well in various fields due to their highly developed pore structures and low cost. Existing preparation methods lack diversity, limiting the ability to tailor pore architectures. This study introduces an innovative sequential activation method that uses different activating agents on biowaste to produce nanopore-rich porous biochars (NPBs). Using bamboo biomass, activation with calcium carbonate followed by potassium carbonate yielded NPBs with a well-developed pore network containing abundant mesopores and micropores, a specific surface ar

Understanding the impact of bio-based fertilizers (BBFs) on the sorption of ionizable pharmaceuticals in soils via both pH and organic matter has received little research attention so far. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted batch sorption experiments with four common ionic pharmaceuticals used in human medicine (naproxen, diclofenac, furosemide, and ibuprofen), four types of commercial BBFs (ash-based, plant-based, animal by-product-based, and manure-based), and two agricultural soils from contrasting climates (Finland and Spain). The sorption affinity of the four pharmaceuticals vari

Biomolecular condensates play a central role in cellular processes by interacting with membranes driving wetting transitions and inducing mutual remodeling. While condensates are known to locally alter membrane properties such as lipid packing and hydration, it remains unclear how membrane composition and phase state in turn affect condensate affinity. Here, we show that it is not only the membrane phase itself, but rather the degree of lipid packing that determines the condensate affinity for membranes. Increasing lipid chain length, saturation, or cholesterol content, enhances lipid packing,

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the most abundant antibody in the human body and plays a critical role in defending against bacteria and viruses that invade through mucosal surfaces. Leveraging this property, recombinant IgA has been developed as a preventive drug for infectious diseases such as COVID-19, influenza, and tuberculosis. Recombinant IgA is typically purified using columns packed with protein-immobilized resins, such as jacalin, Protein L, or nanobody-based materials. However, these methods have several drawbacks, including high costs due to expensive resins and mobile phases, the need f

Herein, a novel ionic liquid doped magnetic microporous organic network (IL-MMON) with abundant electrostatic and ion exchange sites was synthesized for the first time for highly efficient and selective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of polar phenoxycarboxylic acid herbicides (PCAs) from complex vegetable samples. The prepared IL-MMON exhibits large specific surface area, rapid magnetic response, good stability and ample PCAs binding sites. The extraction efficiencies can be reasonably regulated by tuning the doping ratios of IL. The established method has wide linear ranges (1-1000 μg
