Intolerance reactions to endoprostheses may lead to allergological diagnostics, which focus mainly on metal allergy. However, bone cement may also contain potential allergens, e.g. acrylates and additives such as benzoyl peroxide (BPO), N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine, hydroquinone, and antibiotics (particularly gentamicin). Intrinsic or non-atopic asthma is defined by the absence of positive skin test for specific aero-allergens, together with the absence of specific serum IgE. In the adult population, about one third of asthmatic patients are non-atopic. Non-atopic asthma begins generally later in life and is often more severe than atopic asthma. It is more often associated with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, a fact that is often underestimated. At the cellular and molecular level, non-atopic asthma and atopic asthma a very similar, and the reason for their clinical difference is not really understood.

We report a case of a young man with an allergy to latex who developed anaphylactic shock during anaesthesia for renal transplantation. All anaesthetic agents used before the episode were tested as potential allergens and only latex was shown to be positive. It appears that latex contamination in the graft was the cause since no materials containing latex were used during the operation. We feel it essential that donor organs should be removed in a totally latex-free environment. Such conditions will remove the risk of anaphylactic shock at the point of reperfusion of the transplant.

For a period of 12 years, 539 patients with shoe and dye contact dermatitis, were studied in 2 out-patient clinics in Lisbon. 75% of the patients had a bilateral recurrent dermatitis confined to the dorsa of the feet. In Riehl's melanosis, first observed in 1917, facial hyperpigmentation, most pronounced on the forehead and in the zygomatic and/or temporal regions is the dominant symptom. Etiologic factors and incidence of bronchial hyperreactivity as a 'stigma' of bronchial asthma were studied in 237 patients suffering from perennial atopic rhinitis. OX40 and OX40L inhibitors represent the next generation of therapies to treat atopic dermatitis. However, because to their unique mechanism, they have tremendous potential to treat allergic contact dermatitis. Although the cornerstone of allergic contact dermatitis management is allergen avoidance, it is not possible in all cases. In this article, we outline the immunology of these drugs and how they could be leveraged to treat refractory allergic contact dermatitis.

Fever is often associated with infectious, traumatic, or allergenic etiologies, a known consequence of the systemic inflammatory response. Its association with a rise in intracranial pressures (ICP) is an uncommon presentation. We herein describe two patients who developed acute hydrocephalus and presented with high-grade fever. This febrile component was resistant to conventional antipyretics and was only relieved by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion.
