Platelet rich plasma for treatment of non-scarring hair loss: systematic review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Although there are many studies showing the role of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in bone grafts, teeth osteosynthesis, and wound healing, there have been little peer reviewed studies about the safety and efficacy of PRP application in the treatment of hair loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this systematic review, we searched Ovid Medline, Scopus and Web of Knowledge till November 2015 for human studies evaluating the efficacy of PRP for the treatment of non-cicatricial alopecia. RESULTS: Among 704 articles retrieved in first search, 18 articles matched our inclusion criteria, 14 for …

Factors affecting hair regrowth after bone marrow transplantation.

Permanent alopecia after BMT has been reported as a side-effect associated with GVHD or after busulphan conditioning therapy, primarily in adults. We have reviewed children undergoing BMT to document the frequency of incomplete hair regrowth and to evaluate factors associated with this problem. Hair regrowth was studied in 74 children who survived > 6 months following BMT undertaken for malignant and non-malignant diseases. Alopecia was categorised as severe (< 50% of pre-transplant status), moderate (50-75%) or mild (> 75% but less than normal). Overall, 18 (24.3%) of 74 patients had mild (n …

The Cost of the Curl: Wig-Induced Hair Loss in Pediatric Irish Dancers.

Traction alopecia is a well-described cause of hair loss associated with high-tension hairstyles but is rarely reported in children related to wig use. We describe three pediatric patients aged 7-8 years who developed focal vertex scalp alopecia after wearing traditional Irish dancing wigs during high-energy dances. Clinical findings and trichoscopy were consistent with traction alopecia, with partial or complete regrowth following wig avoidance. These cases highlight an underrecognized form of pediatric alopecia caused by prolonged wig use during Irish dancing, emphasizing the importance of e…

Diagnosis and management of the hair loss patient.

Telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, traction/chemical alopecia, and androgenetic alopecia account for more than 90 percent of all causes of hair loss in patients presenting to the dermatologist's office. A thorough understanding of these hair diseases will enable the practicing dermatologist to effectively manage the vast majority of patients who present with scalp hair loss.

Clinical Patterns of Hair Loss in Men: Is Dihydrotestosterone the Only Culprit?

A number of pathways and factors including oxidative stress, inflammation, prostaglandins, vasculogenesis, Wnt/β-catenin, and transforming growth factor-β have been shown to be important in male androgenetic alopecia. There is limited but increasing evidence of the potential usefulness of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, prostaglandins, and growth factors for treating of androgenetic alopecia. Lifestyle factors and comorbidities including cardiovascular risk factors have been shown to be associated with male androgenetic alopecia. Further study of these pathways, factors, and comorbidit…

Hair loss in psychopharmacology.

Medication-induced alopecia is an occasional side effect of many psychopharmaceuticals. Most of the mood stabilizer and antidepressant drugs can lead to this condition. Some antipsychotic and antianxiety agents induce alopecia. Hair loss is also related to hypothyroidism, which can be induced by lithium and other agents. Alopecia might not be reported by some people, but physicians should be aware of this potential problem which may contribute to noncompliance. Lithium causes hair loss in 12-19% of long-term users. Valproic acid and/ or divalproex precipitates alopecia in up to 12% of patients…

Low-Dose Methotrexate and Mucocutaneous Adverse Events: Results of a Systematic Literature Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

OBJECTIVE: Methotrexate (MTX) increases the risk of alopecia and stomatitis, but the prevalence of these adverse events among rheumatic patients taking MTX is poorly defined. We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of alopecia and stomatitis with MTX in rheumatic diseases. METHODS: We searched PubMed, The Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases for double-blind randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with an MTX monotherapy arm. Alopecia, stomatitis, and oral/mouth ulcers data were extracted. The quality of trials was assessed by 2 authors. We inclu…

Combining scalp tissue expansion with porous polyethylene total ear reconstruction in burned patients.

Burned ear reconstruction remains one of the most difficult areas of plastic surgery. A superior result is needed to justify the donor site morbidity when reconstructing with a costochondral graft. Recently, more studies have evaluated porous polyethylene ear reconstruction in microtia and in burns. A total loss of the pinna from burns is rare and often associated with significant alopecia. Tissue expansion is an excellent means of reconstructing burned scalp alopecia. Deeply burned skin is often so densely scarred that a costochondral graft would produce a nondescript scarred mass with little…

Social hair pulling in captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Alopecia is common among captive populations of nonhuman primates. There are many potential causes of alopecia, including physiological conditions such as hormonal imbalance and infection, features of the captive environment such as housing type, ground substrate, and group density, as well as behavioral abnormalities such as self-plucking. A potential behavioral cause of alopecia in group-housed primates is social hair pulling, where one animal pulls hair from a conspecific. While social hair pulling has been conflated with overgrooming in some of the alopecia literature, other authors have c…

Hair Aging and Hair Disorders in Elderly Patients.

Hair loss in elderly patients is a common complaint. It can be related to different conditions that affect patients' quality of life and represents a challenge for dermatologists. It affects both men and women during the aging process with an estimated percentage of balding after 65 years of age of 53% and 37%, respectively. Androgenetic alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, senile alopecia, and erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp are the hair diseases most frequently described in this age group. The objective of this review is to summarize the current knowledge about alopecia affecting e…

Biomaterials for Treatment of Baldness.

Androgenic alopecia affects men and women today, where many factors can be the unknown cause of it. It is essential to find a good, effective, and inexpensive treatment for it, as it is a prevalent dermatological condition. Many drugs like minoxidil (MXD) and finasteride (FNS) are commercially used for its treatment but we are still lacking in terms of a complete cure for alopecia. In this study, we came up with different treatment options for alopecia and assessed their advantages and disadvantages. Not only is the treatment part is essential, but the mode of drug delivery is equally importan…

Overview of AA and Research Progress: What Have We Learned and Where Are We Headed?

During its 25th anniversary year, the National Alopecia Areata Foundation undertook a project to completely re-evaluate their research program and to help focus and direct future directions of alopecia areata research to better meet the goals of people with alopecia areata (AA) and the scientists working to discover mechanisms of disease and better treatments for AA. This project was embodied in four research summits in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012, as part of the Foundation's main strategic initiative, the Alopecia Areata Treatment Development Program to accelerate progress toward a viable alop…

Hair loss after varicella zoster virus infection.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) cutaneous infection occurs predominantly in epidermal and infundibular keratinocytes and accessorily in dermal dendritic cells. These latter cells play a role in cicatricial processes. Two patients are presented with localized alopecia after VZV infection. A 4-year-old girl presented localized hair loss affecting about 20% of her upper right eyelash immediately following the resolution of the varicella skin lesions. No regrowth was observed after 3 months. An 80-year-old woman with a prior history of localized alopecia areata of the left occipital area presented se…

Rare manifestation of hypereosinophilic syndrome: Diffuse-type hair loss with massive perifollicular eosinophils.

A 46-year-old woman consulted our hospital with diffuse alopecia and blood eosinophilia. Histological examination of the scalp revealed dense eosinophilic infiltration around the hair follicles and in the surrounding subcutis. Oral corticosteroid was effective to reduce hair loss and blood eosinophilia, but these conditions immediately relapsed after ending treatment. In addition to alopecia, she had diarrhea and colitis showing histological findings of dense eosinophilic infiltrations in the submucosa. We diagnosed hypereosinophilic syndrome based on hypereosinophilia of blood and tissue with…

The Role of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists in Hair Loss: Clinical Evidence and Proposed Mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are an increasingly prescribed class of antidiabetic medications with expanded use in chronic weight management. Emerging literature has raised concerns regarding dermatologic adverse effects of GLP-1RAs, including various forms of alopecia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of GLP-1RA-associated alopecia, differences among agents, and proposed underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review of GLP-1RAs and alopecia was conducted using PubMed, including articles published up to April 2026. RESULTS: Current l…

Eyebrow Madarosis: An Updated Review of the Etiology and Management, Part I - Nonscarring Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Eyebrow madarosis, or eyebrow alopecia, has significant cosmetic and psychosocial implications. Nonscarring causes are diverse, including autoimmune, infectious, endocrine, genetic, nutritional, traumatic, and iatrogenic etiologies. Despite its frequency in dermatologic practice, guidance for evaluation and management remains limited. METHODS: A comprehensive PubMed search (1960–2025) was performed using terms related to "eyebrow alopecia," "eyebrow madarosis," and specific disease processes. English-language studies were included if they evaluated eyebrow involvement and pr…
