The clinical appearance of fuso-spirillar infection in patients with a serious impairment of the immunitary system was the starting-point for a historical study. At the end of nineteenth century two european researchers clarified the cause of many infections. Association of a spindle-shaped bacillus with a spirillar one was shown to cause several pathologies: necrotic ulcerous stomatitis, pseudomembranous angina, hepatic abscess, otitis, pneumonia, etc. The identification of such bacteria contributed to improving further differential diagnosis with diphteria

Abundant degranulating mast cells were observed during an ultrastructural study of jejunal biopsy from an untreated patient with Whipple's disease. Some of these cells were observed in intimate contact with macrophages containing bacteria in various stages of disintegration. Thereafter bacilli were often seen within the cytoplasm of mast cells, enclosed within vacuoles. These findings are suggestive of a cooperation between mast cell and macrophage in the defence of the organism against Whipple's bacillus.

The clinical pattern of illness in 2 fatal cases of Legionnaires' Disease is described. Common factors in the 2 patients were residence in a hotel in Benidorm, Spain, a severe and progressive pneumonia unaffected by wide-spectrum antibiotics and failure to incriminate an infecting organism. The similarities with the Philadelphia outbreak, in which a bacillus known as the Legionnaire agent was isolated, led to a retrospective diagnosis in the Benidorm episode. Subsequent serological surveys indicate that Legionnaires' Disease is widespread in nature; it is not a new disease.

The objective of this paper is to encourage histopathologists to recognize and diagnose leprosy so that it can be treated effectively at the earliest stage possible, before irreversible deformities result. Recognition of the earliest form of leprosy-indeterminate-is emphasized. Histopathologic descriptions are made and illustrated for the principal types of leprosy. Emphasis is placed on (1) the need for dependable acid-fast staining of leprosy bacillus, (2) the non-specific infiltrate in indeterminate leprosy, and (3) the involvement of nerves in all types of leprosy.

Clostridium septicum is a Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacillus found in the intestine. It is linked to colon cancer and immunosuppression. Infection with C septicum may vary in manifestation and is associated with more than 60% mortality rate. In this article, we present a case of incidental isolation of C septicum in a patient who presented with fever and later on colonoscopy was found to have colon carcinoma. Bacteremia may be the unexpected initial presentation of undiagnosed colon carcinoma.

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is first-line therapy for noninvasive bladder cancer. Although side effects are rare, systemic dissemination can result in mycotic aneurysms. We report the case of a rapidly developing thoracic aortic mycotic aneurysm presenting as massive hemoptysis from an aortobronchial fistula. This case was unusual in its location, rapidity of development, and failure of medical therapy. The diagnostic challenges and the need for a high index of suspicion are discussed.

Anthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis, is an uncommon disease in the United Kingdom. In December 2009, the first recorded case of injectable anthrax in the UK was diagnosed in Glasgow, Scotland. This case report describes the disease presentation in a detained person in police custody in Dumfries, South West Scotland. The case highlights to forensic physicians the clinical features of anthrax, particularly in relation to intravenous drug misuse and the importance of early recognition. Anthrax and its presence in the UK is discussed.

Bacillus anthracis secretes two binary toxins: lethal toxin (PA + LF) and edema toxin (PA + EF) that play a major role in the pathogenesis of anthrax. Their activities can synergize or interfere among each other, depending on the cell type. It is therefore fundamental to know their concentration ratio in vivo. Here, we report the first determination of the concentration ratio of anthrax toxin components LF/EF in the serum of rabbits infected with B. anthracis spores.

Central venous catheter-associated Nocardia bacteremia is rarely reported. We present the case of a 48-y-old male with a history of advanced T-cell lymphoma who suffered from recurrent fever and persistent Gram-positive bacillus bacteremia. Port-A catheter-associated Nocardia bacteremia was diagnosed on the basis of the clinical response to removal of the catheter and the finding of increased gallium uptake, along with the Port-A catheter presented in the gallium inflammation scan.

Bacillus anthracis lethal toxin (PALF) stimulated the proliferation of human peripheral blood T-cells in vitro. Activation of T-lymphocytes by PALF required the presence of monocytes and did not result from a collaborative effect between T-cells and B-cells. PALF acted directly on monocytes and independently of T-cells. The monocytes contributed to the proliferation of T-cells by secretion of mediator(s). The mitogenic activity of the lethal toxin was dependent on its metalloprotease activity.

Melioidosis is an uncommon infection caused by a Gram-negative bacillus, Pseudomonas pseudomallei. Only a few case reports of orthopaedic infection have been published in English, and most were of isolated septic arthritis or secondary to melioidosis of another organ. We have reviewed ten patients with localised melioidotic osteomyelitis; six had underlying conditions. We discuss the importance of obtaining a bacteriological diagnosis, and of surgical debridement as well as appropriate antibiotic therapy.

A patient receiving immunosuppressive treatment for multiple myeloma became granulocytopenic, and acute glossitis developed. Blood cultures were positive for Capnocytophaga, a fastidious Gram-negative bacillus that is known to be part of the normal oral flora and a pathogen for periodontitis. The infection responded to treatment with antibiotics, including penicillin G, to which the organism was sensitive. This is one of the first reports of Capnocytophaga septicemia, and suggests that this organism may be an important pathogen in immunosuppressed patients with oral mucosal lesions.

Bacterial contamination of various parts of the cotton plant and of cotton from different mills was investigated. The predominant bacterial species were Gram-negative rods mainly of the Enterobacter genus. When guinea pigs inhaled strains of these bacteria cultivated from cotton, a strong leucocyte mobilising capacity was found for Pseudomonas and Enterobacter but not for Agrobacterium or Bacillus species. The aetiology of the development of pulmonary symptoms after inhalation of bacteria-containing dusts and subsequent production of endotoxins is discussed.

Technology of obtaining dry concentrated seeding material of the anthrax bacillus STI-1 vaccine strain was worked out. The use of dry seeding material for making dry anthrax vaccine rendered the preparations obtained more standard, reduced the time required for their production, led to increase of AKM-SH productivity, and to greater profitability of the vaccine production. The vaccine preparations obtained with the use of dry seeding material did not differ from control by immunogenicity.

Herein, the synthesis of enzyme-polymer conjugates is reported. Four different activated polymers (mPEG-aldehyde, mPEG-NHS, maltodextrin-aldehyde, carboxymethyl cellulose aldehyde) are conjugated to the surface of protease, α-amylase, and lipase using two different strategies (reductive amination and alkylation with NHS-activated acid). Although the chemical modification of the enzymes is accompanied by losses in enzyme activity (maximum loss 40%), the covalent attachment of polymers increases the thermal stability and the stability in a standard detergent formulation compared to the unmodifie

Several hundred strains of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), isolated in New Zealand from samples of soil and sheep fleece, were tested for toxicity to larvae of the blowfly Lucilia cuprina Wiedemann. Characterization of the Bt strains revealed that three of the more active strains produced Cry1Ba (an insecticidal protein present in Bt mother cell crystal inclusion) that was toxic to blowflies. These strains were evaluated for the ability to prevent experimentally induced fly strike in a bioassay by using first instars. Results with undiluted spore/crystal preparations were variable, but they gener…

Achromobacter animicus (A. animicus) is an aerobic, motile, gram-negative, non-fermenting small bacillus that can also grow anaerobically with potassium nitrate. It has been isolated from sputum of humans suffering from respiratory infections. Literature regarding the role of A. animicus in wound infections is limited. We report a first case of a chronic post-traumatic wound infection caused by a multidrug-resistant A. animicus in a street child from Africa and accompanied diagnostic challenges.

Tuberculosis (TB), being a global health problem, represents variedly. Its presentation as a labial swelling secondary to pubic bone TB has been reported rarely in literature. We report a case of pubic bone TB presenting as a labial swelling in a woman of reproductive age. Early diagnosis with fine needle aspiration cytology, acid-fast bacillus (AFB) staining, AFB culture and magnetic resonance imaging with early initiation of treatment resulted in a favourable outcome.

Bacillus anthracis, the agent responsible for inhalation anthrax, exerts its lethal effects via the production of anthrax toxin (protective antigen, lethal factor and oedema factor); anthrax kills because the toxin overwhelms the patient before innate host defence systems have a chance to eradicate the invaders. Structural studies on these three components provide a starting point for the design of novel drugs to neutralize toxin action, yielding a valuable adjunct to conventional antibiotic treatment.

HPLC method with solid phase extraction, and microbiological agar diffusion tests for determination of oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) in bones, mechanically separated beef and bones were developed. Both mechanically separated bones and bovine flat bones showed the highest yield of tetracyclines by HPLC method. Among tetracyclines, the highest yield was determined in chlortetracycline. The strains of Bacillus subtilis (PH 6.0) and B. stearothermophilus showed the highest sensitivity to the presence of tetracyclines.
