We report the death of a 28-year-old man due to sniffing a contact cement containing trichloroethylene. Initial testing revealed the presence of 80 mg/L trichloroethanol in cardiac blood, and the death was ruled as being due to trichloroethanol toxicity resulting from chloral hydrate ingestion. However, further investigation of the case revealed that the trichloroethanol resulted from trichloroethylene abuse. We reviewed 38 hip replacements in 33 female patients (mean age 55.3 years) with developmental hip dysplasia. One patient had died and the remaining 32 patients (36 hips) had a mean follow-up of 12.2 years (range 8-19 years). All hips were replaced using the Müller cemented implant, and in 32 hips bulk femoral head autograft was used. In 33 hips the socket was reconstructed at the level of the true acetabulum. Aseptic loosening of cemented knee arthroplasties has encouraged development of uncemented fixation. The Miller-Galante I (MG I) prosthesis was designed to achieve permanent stability through ingrowth into a titanium fiber mesh. The treatment of osteoarthrosis of the proximal interphalangeal joint by prosthesis bears several specific problems. With the DIGITOS-prosthesis a new implant is now available. It is a cemented modular hinged prosthesis. We report our experiences with this implant from a prospective clinical trial. Seven patients with osteoarthrosis of the proximal interphalangeal joint had ten prosthetic middle joint replacements performed with DIGITOS-prostheses. Sixteen consecutive patients with cutout of a lag screw of a dynamic hip screw fixation in an intertrochanteric fracture were treated with reinsertion of a lag screw, bone cement supplementation in the neck-trochanter, and subtrochanteric valgus osteotomy. XK endo B is a type I keratin that was originally identified by its preferential expression in the embryonic notochord of the amphibian Xenopus laevis. A peptide identical to a short region of its predicted amino acid sequence was used to generate antibodies against the XK endo B protein.
