Liver disorders due to infections are a substantial health concern in underdeveloped and industrialized countries. This includes not only hepatotropic viruses (e.g., hepatitis B, hepatitis C) but also bacterial and parasitic infections such as amebiasis, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, or echinococcosis. Recent studies of the immune mechanisms underlying liver disease show that monocytes play an essential role in determining patient outcomes. Monocytes are derived from the mononuclear phagocyte lineage in the bone marrow and are present in nearly all tissues of the body; these cells function a

INTRODUCTION: Spinal hydatidosis, a zoonotic disease caused by infection with Echinococcus spp. larvae, is rare, but its treatment remains a significant medical challenge. Approximately 70% of patients with spinal hydatidosis have lesions in their liver, 0-15% have lung involvement, and only 0.5-2% have bone involvement.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a 38-year-old Iranian man with spinal hydatidosis, who had a history of eight times surgery in over of 26 years due to hydatid cyst in the liver, lungs, and chest wall. At the most recent admission to hospital he presented with chest pain, pa

Hydatid disease (HD), also known as echinococcal disease or echinococcosis, is a worldwide zoonosis with a wide geographic distribution. It can be found in almost all parts of the body and usually remains silent for a long period of time. Clinical history can be varied based on the location, size, host immune response, and complications. The most common imaging modalities used for diagnosis and further evaluations of HD are ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although conventional radiography may be the first used tool, rarely can lead to a definite judg

Echinococcosis is caused by larva of Echinococcus granulosus. Liver being most commonly involved, other organs/body parts such as bone involvement is not so uncommon, especially in cattle-raising countries such as India. Primary osseous echinococcosis remains undiagnosed until complications have developed. We report a case of complicated pelvic echinococcosis presented with left gluteal mass, acetabulum and femoral head destruction, and reduced hip mobility. Pre- and postoperative chemotherapy with albendazole and en bloc surgical removal of the cyst were advocated as the preferred option of t

Bone cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a rare condition requiring a high level of suspicion during primary diagnosis. Wide excision of the lesion is the gold standard of treatment, posing however extreme challenges in certain parts of the skeleton, since it may well be accompanied by increased morbidity. We report the case of a 35-year-old Caucasian female with iliac bone CE, referred to our department (a regional referral center for the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal tumors). The patient reported gradually increasing dull pain at the right iliac fossa and antalgic gait, with an onset

Isolated hydatid disease of the breast is a rare condition, possessing a diagnostic dilemma for the clinicians. Hydatid disease is common in endemic areas affecting most commonly the liver and lungs. Other organs rarely involved are the kidney, bone and brain. It is caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus, widely spread by cattle and sheep. Humans are the accidental host for this organism. We present a similar case of isolated hydatid cyst of the breast, which was diagnosed preoperatively and managed successfully.

We describe a rare case of large, fully cystic spinal schwannoma in a young adult from The Gambia. The initial clinical suspicion was spinal cystic echinococcosis. He came to our attention reporting progressive walking impairment and neurological symptoms in the lower limbs. An expansive lesion extending from L2 to S1 was shown by imaging (ie, CT scan and MRI). Differential diagnoses included aneurysmal bone cyst and spinal tuberculosis and abscess; the initial suggested diagnosis of spinal cystic echinococcosis was discarded based on contrast enhancement results. The final diagnosis of cystic

OBJECTIVE: To detect the expression of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), p38MAPK and bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) protein in the liver specimens of patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis, and to investigate the potential role of TGF-β1, p38MAPK and BMP-7 protein in hepatic fibrosis caused by hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.
METHODS: A total of 20 patients with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis were enrolled as study subjects, and hepatic specimens were sampled from the sites within 0.5 cm (Group A) and 0.5 to 1.5 cm from hepatic alveolar echinococcosis lesions (Group B), wh

Cystic Echinococcosis or Hydatid disease is caused by the infection with the larval stage of long tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus. This condition often remains asymptomatic for years before the cyst grows large enough to cause symptoms in affected organs. The most common organs involved are liver and lungs although the heart, brain, bone, central nervous system, and kidney may also be involved. This case is about a young woman who presented with left flank pain and urinary tract infection who was later diagnosed as having left renal hydatid cyst. The cyst was approximately 7.8×6.6×8cm with i

Pelvic hydatid bone disease is a rare and debilitating condition. Patients often present with symptoms and signs when the disease process is advanced and curative resection is not possible. We present a case of destructive bone hydatid disease affecting the left iliac bone. A 45-year-old woman presented initially 5 years ago with a left pelvic mass to the gynaecology department. Computed tomography (CT) scan done at that time showed a large pelvic, left iliac fossa cystic mass with the destruction of the left iliac bone. Extension of the cystic mass transversed the iliac bone into the posterio

Oromaxillofacial hydatid cysts are rare, even in countries where echinococcosis is endemic. This study aimed to describe an isolated oromaxillofacial hydatid cyst and to discuss the epidemiology, clinical features, and treatment thereof. The authors report the case of a 12 year-old boy who presented with a 2-week history of an enlarging hydatid cyst in the parapharyngeal space extending to the neck, with no pulmonary or hepatic involvement. We present our clinical findings, diagnostic techniques, and treatment and review the relevant literature. Forty-one cases, with a male:female ratio of 1.2

Among echinococcoses diseases of human interest, two have a global public health impact: cystic and alveolar echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato and Echinococcus multilocularis, respectively. Cystic and alveolar echinococcosis are neglected infectious diseases epidemiologically and are clinically vastly different with distinct microscopic features. Because of the rareness of these zoonotic diseases, pathologists have limited diagnostic experience in the analysis of the lesions caused by Echinococcus tapeworms. Here, we describe the main microscopic features to be consid

Echinococcus multilocularis is endemic in Germany. However, alveolar echinococcosis is a rare disease. Most commonly the parasite affects the liver, behaving like a malignant tumour. Bones are affected in less than 2% of cases. We report a case of vertebral osteomyelitis accompanied by recurrent cutaneous fistula formation.

CASE: Osseous hydatidosis caused by Echinococcus is rare, especially in long bones. To the best of our knowledge, this is the third femoral hydatidosis case with successful osseous eradication through total femoral resection and total femoral megaprosthesis. Unlike the previous 2 cases, we uniquely illustrate recurrent soft-tissue hydatidosis episodes requiring additional hydatid resections for local control with no evidence of disease at final 16-year follow-up, the longest follow-up period of the 3 reported cases.
CONCLUSION: Despite radical bone resection for osseous hydatidosis eradicatio

The liver and lungs are most commonly affected. Bone involvement (osseous hydatidosis) is distinctly uncommon, and its diagnosis and treatment can be challenging. We report a case of a 54-year-old male with right knee pain and edema and an extensive lesion on the femur; he was diagnosed with knee hydatidosis and was successfully treated with surgery and albendazole. This case reinforces the importance of the rare osseous hydatid

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease usually affects the liver, but can also extend to other locations, such as the bones. In these cases, complete resection of the bone is considered the only curative approach. However, this is rarely feasible, and patients are left with benzimidazoles as their only option. In this context, there is an evident need for alternative treatments that can improve results. We present the case of a patient with a treatment-refractory hydatid cyst of the bone, who successfully underwent radiotherapy (RT).
CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old woman was diagnosed with a hydatid cyst of
