Lead-induced neurodevelopmental lesion and epigenetic landscape: Implication in neurological disorders.

Lead (Pb) was implicated in multiple genotoxic, neuroepigenotoxic, and chromosomal-toxic mechanisms and interacted with varying synaptic plasticity pathways, likely underpinning previous reports of links between Pb and cognitive impairment. Epigenetic changes have emerged as a promising biomarker for neurological disorders, including cognitive disorders, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). In the present review, special attention is paid to neural epigenetic features and mechanisms that can alter gene expression patterns upon environmental Pb exposure in rodents, primates,

Sleep-wake disturbances after traumatic brain injury.

Sleep-wake disturbances are extremely common after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The most common disturbances are insomnia (difficulties falling or staying asleep), increased sleep need, and excessive daytime sleepiness that can be due to the TBI or other sleep disorders associated with TBI, such as sleep-related breathing disorder or post-traumatic hypersomnia. Sleep-wake disturbances can have a major effect on functional outcomes and on the recovery process after TBI. These negative effects can exacerbate other common sequelae of TBI-such as fatigue, pain, cognitive impairments, and psycho

Orofaryngeale slikstoornissen bij neurodegeneratieve aandoeningen.

Neurodegenerative diseases are progressive degenerations of the brain with increasing movement disorders, like gait, speech and swallowing disorders combined with cognitive disorders, like dementia. Neurodegenerative diseases have in common that aspiration pneumonia is the most frequent cause of death in the end-stage of the disease. This article provides an overview of the prevalence, characteristics and treatments of oropharyngeal dysphagia resulting from multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), Huntington's disease (HD), multiple sclerosis (MS) and dementia. 3q29 microdeletion syndrome: Cognitive and behavioral phenotype in four patients.

The 3q29 microdeletion syndrome is a rare, recurrent genomic disorder, associated with a variable phenotype, despite the same deletion size, consisting in neurodevelopmental features, such as intellectual disability (ID), schizophrenia, autism, bipolar disorder, depression and mild facial morphological anomalies/congenital malformations. A thorough neuropsychiatric evaluation has never been reported in patients with such syndrome. We analyzed the clinical phenotype of four individuals with 3q29 microdeletion syndrome, with special emphasis on the cognitive and behavioral assessment, in order t

Expanding the limits of bibliotherapy for panic disorder: randomized trial of self-help without support but with a clear deadline.

Cognitive behavioral bibliotherapy for panic disorder has been found to be less effective without therapist support. In this study, participants were randomized to either unassisted bibliotherapy (n=20) with a scheduled follow-up telephone interview or to a waiting list control group (n=19). Following a structured psychiatric interview, participants in the treatment group were sent a self-help book consisting of 10 chapters based on cognitive behavioral strategies for the treatment of panic disorder. No therapist contact of any kind was provided during the treatment phase, which lasted for 10

Chronic dopaminergic stimulation in Parkinson's disease: from dyskinesias to impulse control disorders.

Dopamine is an essential neurotransmitter for many brain functions, and its dysfunction has been implicated in both neurological and psychiatric disorders. Parkinson's disease is an archetypal disorder of dopamine dysfunction characterised by motor, cognitive, behavioural, and autonomic symptoms. While effective for motor symptoms, dopamine replacement therapy is associated not only with motor side-effects, such as levodopa-induced dyskinesia, but also behavioural side-effects such as impulse control disorders (eg, pathological gambling and shopping, binge eating, and hypersexuality), punding

Evidence Based Research in CBT with Adolescent Eating Disorders.

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is increasingly becoming the treatment of choice for a number of adolescent mental health problems, including depression (Harrington et al., 1998) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), (March, 1995). In considering the role of CBT in the treatment of adolescent eating disorders, it is helpful to review the phenomenology of anorexia and bulimia nervosa in this age group and to assess the theoretical relevance of a cognitive behavioural approach to their management. The evidence base has been reviewed in the recently published National Institute of Clinical E

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood: a study of neuropsychological functioning.

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a rare chronic neurological disorder characterized by alternating transient attacks of hemiplegia. Evidence from recent studies suggests the disorder is characterized by tonic fits, dystonic posturing, and ocular motor abnormalities. Although widely observed, deficits in cognitive functioning are among one of the least described features of AHC. Most studies describe global deficits, however, no study has provided a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment of a child with AHC. This study presents neuropsychological findings from a comprehensive a

Visual hallucinations in a geriatric psychiatry clinic: prevalence and associated diagnoses.

Visual hallucinations are associated with a variety of psychiatric, medical, neurologic, and ophthalmologic disorders. One hundred forty outpatients presenting to a geriatric psychiatric clinic were screened for visual hallucinations and assessed on a number of descriptive variables, medical history, ophthalmologic history, psychiatric diagnosis, and cognitive score. The data revealed that 14 patients (10%) experienced visual hallucinations. Presence of visual hallucinations was significantly associated with diagnoses of dementia or delirium, living in a nursing home, lower cognitive score, an

Evidence for Cognitive Remediation Therapy in Young People with Anorexia Nervosa: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of the Literature.

Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) for eating disorders has demonstrated promising findings in adult age groups, with randomised treatment trials and systematic reviews demonstrating medium to large effect sizes in improved cognitive performance. In recent years, several case series have been conducted for young people with anorexia nervosa, but these findings have not been synthesised in the form of a systematic review. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the evidence for the efficacy of CRT in child and adolescent age groups. Nine studies were identified, with a subsequent meta-analysi

Is there a common pathway to developing ASD and PTSD symptoms?

Numerous studies have identified risk factors for acute and long-term posttraumatic stress symptoms following traumatic exposure. However, little is known about whether there are common pathways to the development of acute stress disorder (ASD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research suggests that a common path to ASD and PTSD may lie in peritraumatic responses and cognitions. The results of structural equation modeling in a national sample of Danish bank robbery victims (N=450) show that peritraumatic panic, anxiety sensitivity, and negative cognitions about self were significant c

The relationship between neuroleptic dosage and cognitive functioning in chronic schizophrenic patients.

A review of the effects of phenothiazines on cognitive function suggests that phenothiazine derivatives facilitate performance on tests of cognitive function, at least in subjects who are thought disordered. Drug effects frequently depend on the dose administered, however, and the response to various doses of some drugs (e.g., antidepressants) is frequently nonlinear. In our study, 23 hospitalized males with chronic psychotic disorders, and stabilized on dosages of neuroleptics with chlorpromazine equivalents of from 50 to 7,200 milligrams daily, were tested in the morning and in the evening o

The need to relate cognitive deficits to specific behavioral referents of schizophrenia.

The implicit rationale for many cognitive studies of schizophrenia hinges on the recognition that verbal communication generated by patients with this disorder is often elusive or difficult to comprehend. This observation has led to the inference that a cognitive dysfunction, which mediates the production of discourse failure, is characteristic of schizophrenia. Unfortunately, most investigators have chosen to examine this type of hypothesis by comparing heterogeneous groups of schizophrenic patients (without regard to whether they exhibit verbal communication impairment) with various control

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF USING SUGGESTIVE METHODS IN COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY.

AIM: This study examines the integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with suggestive methods, reflecting the growing trend toward methodological convergence in psychotherapy. It focuses on the psychological mechanisms underlying suggestion and its adaptation to digital therapeutic contexts. METHODS: A systemic-analytical approach, qualitative comparative analysis, and content analysis of contemporary literature were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of combining cognitive and suggestive techniques. RESULTS: The study identifies key forms of suggestion within CBT, including dire

Intrusive images in psychological disorders: characteristics, neural mechanisms, and treatment implications.

Involuntary images and visual memories are prominent in many types of psychopathology. Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder, other anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, and psychosis frequently report repeated visual intrusions corresponding to a small number of real or imaginary events, usually extremely vivid, detailed, and with highly distressing content. Both memory and imagery appear to rely on common networks involving medial prefrontal regions, posterior regions in the medial and lateral parietal cortices, the lateral temporal cortex, and the medial temporal lobe. Cognitive function, thyroid status and postpartum depression.

Impairment of cognitive function can occur with thyroid disorder and also with depression. Since depression occurs in conjunction with postpartum autoimmune thyroiditis, the question arises as to whether any impairment of cognitive function in postpartum women is related to change in thyroid status or to depressed mood. A total of 242 women (110 thyroid antibody-positive and 132 antibody-negative) were assessed at 8, 12, 20 and 28 weeks postpartum in the outpatients of a district general hospital. Thyroid antibody levels (antimicrosomal and antithyroglobulin) were monitored at monthly interval

[Attention and associative memory in patients with sequelae of ischemic stroke].

To study social and adaptation potentialities of 56 patients with a history of ischemic brain stroke, they were examined for attention and associative memory (AM). Use was made of neuropsychological techniques and phonooscillography of latent conditions of AM. The patients manifested deceleration and instability of all the time parameters of the process of attention (tempo, rate, quality, productivity, accuracy), its depletion (in hemispheric foci) and instability (in stem derangement), as well as a decrease of the level of active attention and of the capability of its switching over (especial

Relative abuse liability of lorazepam and diazepam: an evaluation in 'recreational' drug users.

The subjective, psychomotor and cognitive effects of oral doses of lorazepam (0, 1.5, 3 and 6 mg) and diazepam (0, 10, 20 and 40 mg) were studied under double-blind conditions in 14 volunteers with histories of 'recreational' benzodiazepine use/abuse. For each subject, drug was administered over 4 test days in a 2 (drug) by 4 (dose level) mixed design. Drug was the between-groups factor while dose was the within-subjects factor. Test days were separated by at least 1 week. The results showed that subjective ratings of drug 'liking' and the psychomotor and cognitive effects of lorazepam were ge
