Organs-at-risk dose and normal tissue complication probability with dynamic trajectory radiotherapy (DTRT) for head and neck cancer.

We compared dynamic trajectory radiotherapy (DTRT) to state-of-the-art volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for 46 head and neck cancer cases. DTRT had lower dose to salivary glands and swallowing structure, resulting in lower predicted xerostomia and dysphagia compared to VMAT. DTRT is deliverable on C-arm linacs with high dosimetric accuracy.

Perceptions of Dysphagia Evaluation and Treatment Among Individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

Dysphagia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). The primary objectives of the present study were to explore patients' narrative reports focused on what information and evaluation and treatment experiences they identified as they manage dysphagia, and to identify practice patterns relevant to dysphagia management. A secondary objective was to produce an educational resource for this population that addressed their questions about dysphagia. A sample of individuals with oropharyngeal dysphagia secondary to PD (n = 25) across all regions of

Navigating reflux disease after achalasia treatments: Balancing risks and benefits.

The peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) procedure has revolutionized the management of achalasia in many centres around the world as it offers patients a minimally invasive endoscopic solution to their dysphagia caused by achalasia. Alongside its success in alleviating dysphagia, concerns regarding postoperative gastroesophageal reflux disease have emerged as a pertinent issue which are not fully resolved. In this study, Nabi et al have comprehensively reviewed the topic of the prediction, prevention and management of gastroesophageal reflux after POEM. POEM is a purely endoscopic procedure whic

Illness uncertainty and dysphagia in Chinese oral cancer patients: the mediation effect of catastrophic cognition.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia, a serious symptom of oral cancer, is also the most common. Further, patients who are more uncertain regarding their illness tend to catastrophize, which may affect their rehabilitation and long-term survival rate. Considering this relationship, this study aimed to investigate the occurrence of dysphagia in Chinese patients with oral cancer and explore the correlation between catastrophic cognition, illness uncertainty, and dysphagia. METHODS: Applying a cross-sectional design, convenience sampling was used to recruit 180 patients with oral cancer. Advanced statistical meth

All-in-one wearable drug efficacy assessment systems for bulbar muscle function using amyotrophic lateral sclerosis animal models.

Preclinical studies are crucial for developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis drugs. Current FDA-approved drugs have been created by monitoring limb muscle function and histological analysis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis model animals. Drug candidates for this disease have yet to be tested for bulbar-onset type due to the limitations of traditional preclinical tools: excessive animal use and discrete detection of disease progress. Here, our study introduces an all-in-one, wireless, integrated wearable system for facilitating continuous drug efficacy assessment of dysphagia-related muscles in

How enteral nutrition modes influence nasopharyngeal carcinoma survivors with late dysphagia after radiotherapy: a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Palliation to late dysphagia after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) continues to be a challenge. Intermittent oro-esophageal tube feeding (IOE) is an emerging enteral nutrition mode that can address nutrition and quality of life issues related to nasogastric tube feeding (NGT). OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the effect of IOE versus NGT in late dysphagia after radiotherapy for NPC. METHODS: This randomized controlled study included 82 NPC survivors with late dysphagia after radiotherapy. The subjects were randomized divided into the IOE and NGT groups (

Serotonin therapies for opioid-induced disordered swallow and respiratory depression.

Opioids are well-known to cause respiratory depression, but despite clinical evidence of dysphagia, the effects of opioids on swallow excitability and motor pattern are unknown. We tested the effects of the clinically relevant opioid buprenorphine on pharyngeal swallow and respiratory drive in male and female rats. We also evaluated the utility of 5-HT1A agonists (8-OH-DPAT and buspirone) to improve swallowing and breathing following buprenorphine administration. Experiments were performed on 44 freely breathing Sprague-Dawley rats anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital. Bipolar fine wire elec
