Six patients and their parents from five different families with Hb H have been evaluated clinically and hematologically. Previous studies using restriction endonuclease mapping technique indicated that alpha-thalassemia determinants in these cases are heterogeneous. The pancreas is a dual-function organ, with exocrine cells that aid in digestion and endocrine cells that regulate glucose homeostasis. These cell types share common progenitors and arise from the embryonic ducts. Early signaling events in the embryonic ducts shape the neonatal, adolescent, and adult exocrine and endocrine pancreas. This chapter discusses recent advances in the tools used to study the ducts and our current understanding of how ductal development contributes to pancreatic organogenesis.

Probiotics are live micro-organisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. Consumption of yoghurt has been shown to induce measurable health benefits linked to the presence of live bacteria. A number of human studies have clearly demonstrated that yoghurt containing viable bacteria (Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii sp. bulgaricus) improves lactose digestion and eliminates symptoms of lactose intolerance. Thus, these cultures clearly fulfil the current concept of probiotics.

Plasmid analysis and restriction-endonuclease digestion were used to study 54 clinical and environmental Legionella strains. Plasmids with approximate molecular masses of 40, 50, 70, and 90 megadaltons (Mdal) have been isolated from L. pneumophila serogroup 1 strains. One L. jordanis strain contained two plasmids of 25 and 70 Mdal. Restriction analysis of clinical and related hospital-environmental isolates resulted in identical patterns. Geographic diversity is shown for strains of different origin.

A survey on 589 foxes for the control of trichinelliasis in the Province of Rome was carried out in collaboration with the gamekeepers of the Province of Rome. The presence of Trichinella larvae in masseters muscles was studied using trichinoscope and digestion methods. Five foxes out 589 were found infected; four infected animals were killed in the Prenestini and Simbruini mountains, one infected animal was killed in the plain north west of Rome.

Transplantation of isolated islets of Langerhans has been suggested as a treatment of certain forms of diabetes mellitus. Injection of 200-400 syngeneic pancreatic islets isolated by collagenase digestion into the pancreas or submandibular gland of diabetic rats rendered most of the hosts nearly normoglycaemic. Blood glucose determinations were monitored for 2 months after islet transplantation. Although intrapancreatic and intrasubmandibular implantation reduced hyperglycaemia and polyuria in these animals, consistent normal values were rarely achieved.
