Meniere's Disease is commonly diagnosed using Electrocochleography (ECOG). EVestG is a variant of ECOG utilizing one or more patient tilts as stimuli in place of the ECOG's repeated tonal clicks. The dynamic measures averaged 'background-onAA' (onAA=acceleration phase of tilt) and background-onBB (onBB=deceleration phase of tilt) of excitatory (ipsilateral tilt) vestibular responses are compared for a small group of age matched Controls (n=18) and Meniere's Disease patients (n=11). Preliminary data provides for an apparent clearer demarcation between Controls and Meniere's patients. Meniere's

OBJECTIVES: Following translabyrinthine craniotomy the temporal bone defect is commonly obliterated using a free autologous fat graft. In this series the dura was put back in place but not closed primarily. As the fat graft remains in direct contact with the cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) there is potential for dispersal of fat within the CSF space. This paper aims to determine the frequency of such CSF fat dissemination and its clinical significance.
DESIGN: A retrospective review of translabyrinthine acoustic neuroma removal with free fat autograft obliteration of the temporal bone defect betwe

Organic plagiocephaly is caused by premature synostosis of the coronal suture. The subject is dealt with in the context of a desire to categorize these types of asymmetries and to find asymmetry indices using computed tomography scan images. From a cephalometric point of view, the authors looked for a reproducible reference, independent of the structures to be studied-the vestibular orientation, which is based on the definition of a mediolabyrinthic plane, making it possible to assess the symmetry. One of the problems encountered in this study of the cranial vault is related to the difficulty

A perfect knowledge of the anatomy of the vestibuloacusticofacial pedicle is required to preserve hearing and facial functions during cerebellopontine angle surgery for vestibular schwannoma. A clarification of the anatomy of this pedicle, in particular of its blood supply, is presented here, based on a review of the available literature, as well as on the author's data issued from anatomical dissections on latex-injected fresh specimens, and from radiological images of the cerebellopontine angle. The blood supply to the vestibuloacusticofacial bundle arises from the meatal loop of the anterio

In experiments on the preparation of a frog perfused brain (Rana ridibunda), field and intracellular potentials were recorded from neurons of the vestibular nuclear complex following stimulation of the ipsilateral vestibular nerve and different levels of the spinal cord. Stimulation of the vestibular nerve evoked mono- and polysynaptic excitatory postsynaptic potentials and orthodromic action potentials. In parallel, an antidromic activation of vestibular neurons sending their axons to the labyrinth was recorded. Vestibulospinal neurons sending their axons to the cervical (C neurons) and lumba

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is one of the most dangerous complications that can arise in cases of acoustic neuroma removal. It increases the risk of meningitis, requires longer postoperative recovery and often requires revision surgery. A retrospective analysis was performed on all cases of acoustic neuromas which had undergone translabyrinthine surgery at the Gruppo Otologico, Piacenza, Italy, between April 1987 and December 1997, in the aim of finding the causes of postoperative CSF leaks. The causes found were high pneumatization of the temporal bone and improper execution of some surgic

Delayed Endolymphatic Hydrops (DEH) is a clinical entity which is characterized by an early phase with a profound sensorineural hearing loss in one ear. After a prolonged period of time (from 1 to 68 years) a late phase of the disease appears with different otologic symptoms. The ipsilateral type of endolymphatic hydrops appears in the deaf ear with consequent episodic vertigo. The contralateral type develops symptoms of endolymphatic hydrop in the previously normal ear, with the onset of fluctuating hearing loss and/or episodic vertigo. This paper is a review of 12 cases of DEH (7 ipsilateral

Early results for hearing and vertigo are reported for 47 labyrinthotomies with streptomycin infusion (LSI) by 13 coinvestigator-surgeons. Sixty-eight percent of patients had worse hearing after surgery (10 dB or 15% word recognition). Patients with a preoperative pure-tone average better than or equal to 40 dB appeared to suffer less postoperative hearing loss than those with a greater preoperative deficit. Severe to profound postoperative hearing loss was experienced by 27 patients (57%), all of whom had preoperative pure-tone averages worse than 40 dB. Opening the endolymphatic space was as

Vestibular neurectomy is gaining widespread acceptance as a primary means of controlling medically refractory vertigo. However, debate continues over the adequacy of vestibular neurectomy within the cerebellopontine angle, long-term control, and the most appropriate surgical approach. To address these issues, we retrospectively reviewed 118 patients who underwent vestibular neurectomy between October 1984 and January 1988. Forty-two patients who underwent a retrolabyrinthine approach and 44 patients who underwent a retrosigmoid approach completed a written questionnaire and provided a recent a

The physician should realize that children can have organic vestibular disorders. Therefore, he should seriously approach every child who complains of dizziness, taking a careful history and performing appropriate examinations in order to afford the best possibility of prompt diagnosis and effective treatment.

The tympanic membrane (TM), or eardrum, is a thin, sensitive tissue critical for hearing by vibrating and transmitting sound waves to the inner ear. TM perforation and development of otitis media and conductive hearing loss are commonly seen in the clinic. In this study, we demonstrate the role of TRPV1 signaling mediated macrophage recruitment and angiogenesis in TM repair. By creating a wounded TM mouse model with a perforation in the anteroinferior region of the pars tensa - a region in humans often damaged in traumatic injury, we observed a massive accumulation of macrophages in the vicini

OBJECTIVE: To discuss indications (unfavorable conditions), surgical steps, complications, and follow-up of subtotal petrosectomy (STP) in cochlear implantation based on our experience of 348 cases. Anatomical variations associated with or without cochlear malformations and differences between electrode insertions were included in our analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case study was done in Gruppo Otologico (Piacenza, Italy), a quaternary referral center. Among 1002 cases that underwent subtotal petrosectomy, 348 were selected for cochlear implantation in the same setting. The

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is the most prevalent sensory deficit globally, and its prevalence has been growing at a rapid pace, mainly due to aging population. Although there is plentiful evidence that exposure to air pollutants contributes to oxidative stress and free radical formation in inner ear is linked to hearing impairment, there is little awareness of the contribution of air pollution to hearing loss.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between long-term exposures to air pollution and hearing loss in Korean adults, while controlling for sociodemographic and clinical factors and occ

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is a common disorder characterized by sound in the ear in the absence of external or internal stimuli. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) was discovered enhancing tissue repair via increasing the blood microcirculation and cell proliferation in 1960s. In the last two decades, LLLT delivered to the cochlea has frequently been used to reduce the severity of tinnitus. However, whether LLLT effectively attenuates the severity of tinnitus remains controversial. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of low-level laser therapy on adult patients with complaints of tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to access the contribution of vertigo/dizziness-related patients' interview and examinations during short-term hospitalization in determining the accurate final diagnosis of vertigo/dizziness of unknown origin.
METHODS: We reviewed 1905 successive vertigo/dizziness patients at the Vertigo/Dizziness Center of Nara Medical University, who were introduced from general otolaryngologists at outpatient town clinic from May 2014 to April 2020. However, 244 patients were diagnosed with vertigo/dizziness of unknown origin (244/1905; 12.8%). Of these patients,
