Influences of secretory activities in rat submandibular glands on tissue kallikrein circulating in the blood.

Changes in serum levels of rat tissue kallikrein (rK1) in venous blood were measured, using a newly developed radioimmunoassay, before and after autonomic nerve stimulations of submandibular salivary secretion. rK1 secreted into saliva under these conditions was measured by radioimmunoassay and by enzymic activity assay, using the fluorogenic peptide substrate D-Val-Leu-Arg-7-amino-4-trifluoromethylcoumarin (AFC). Following an overnight fast, serum rK1 concentration was 30-40 ng ml-1. Unilateral electrical stimulation of the submandibular sympathetic nerve supply (at 50 Hz in bursts of 1 s eve

Long-latency spinal reflex in man after flexor reflex afferent stimulation.

Electromyographic (EMG) flexor muscle responses evoked by electrical stimulation of ipsilateral peripheral nerves were studied in 16 patients with clinically complete spinal cord transection. Stimuli were applied either to a cutaneous nerve (sural) or to a mixed nerve (tibial) and muscle responses were recorded from tibialis anterior, biceps femoris and rectus femoris. EMG recordings after both sural and tibial nerve stimulation showed that distinct early and late ipsilateral flexor muscle responses could be elicited. This distinction was more evident for tibialis anterior. The latency of the

Shamo: A Tool for Electromagnetic Modeling, Simulation and Sensitivity Analysis of the Head.

Accurate electromagnetic modeling of the head of a subject is of main interest in the fields of source reconstruction and brain stimulation. Those processes rely heavily on the quality of the model and, even though the geometry of the tissues can be extracted from magnetic resonance images (MRI) or computed tomography (CT), their physical properties such as the electrical conductivity are difficult to measure with non intrusive techniques. In this paper, we propose a tool to assess the uncertainty in the model parameters, the tissue conductivity, as well as compute a parametric forward models

Treatment of idiopathic head drop (camptocephalia) by deep brain stimulation of the globus pallidus internus.

Deep brain stimulation of the globus pallidus internus has been shown to be beneficial in a small number of patients suffering from axial dystonias. However, it has not yet been reported as an effective treatment for the alleviation of idiopathic head drop. The authors describe a 49-year-old woman with idiopathic cervical dystonia (camptocephalia) who was unable to raise her head > 30 degrees when standing or sitting; her symptoms would abate when lying down. This disabling neurological condition was treated successfully with bilateral chronic electrical stimulation of the globus pallidus inte

Laryngeal pacing in unilateral vocal cord paralysis. An experimental study.

In an attempt to remobilize a unilaterally paralyzed vocal cord, experiments were made in five adult dogs. Adduction of the paralyzed vocal cord for phonation in synchrony with the intact cord was achieved by electrical stimulation of the adductor muscles that was triggered by the signals from the cricothyroid muscle. The difference in the level of action potentials of the cricothyroid muscle between during phonation and during respiration was used for setting the threshold so as to differentiate phonation from respiration. Nearly synchronous movement of the two vocal cords thereby attained du

[Bilateral projection of the olfactory mucosa in the frog].

Bulbar potentials wer bilaterally recorded in the frog following electrical stimulation of one olfactory nerve bundle. The general features of the contralateral evoked response were very similar to those of ipsilateral ones. The contralateral response was shown to be produced in situ, not being electronically transmitted from the bulb on the stimulated side. Its response disappeared after section of the olfactory interbulbar adhesion but was not affected by sectioning through either the anterior or the habenular commissure. It was concluded that messages from the neuroreceptors belonging to ei

Effect of Acupoint Stimulation on Improving Gastrointestinal Motility in Patients After Gastrectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: Gastrointestinal immobility is experienced by many patients who undergo gastric surgery. This complication delays enteral nutrition, prolongs hospitalization, and causes discomfort. Acupoint stimulation is a popular alternative nonpharmacological treatment for gastrointestinal immobility. This study aimed to explore the effects of acupoint stimulation on gastrointestinal immobility after gastrectomy. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Joanna Briggs Institute EBP Database, Medline, CINAHL Complete, and Airiti library) were searched f

Discontinuous long-train stimulation in the anterior striatum in monkeys induces abnormal behavioral states.

The striatum has been identified as a new target for therapeutic deep brain stimulation in the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. The nonhuman primate model offers opportunities for detailed mapping of the behavioral effects of stimulation within the striatum. We recently showed that dysfunction in the dorsal and ventral striatum was able to produce a specific pattern of abnormal movements and behavioral states. In the present study, electrical stimulation of monkey striatum evoked abnormal movements and behavioral states depending not only on the location of stimulation site

Pharmacological study on sympathetic inhibition of the urinary bladder in dogs.

The sympathetic inhibitory mechanism in dog urinary bladder studied. The bladder contractions induced by electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve both proximal and distal to the pelvic plexus and by intraarterial administration of tetramethylammonium (TMA) were inhibited by stimulation of the hypogastric nerve and intraarterial injection of catecholamines. The inhibition by hypogastric nerve stimulation was more potent at the low frequency of pelvic nerve stimulation than at the high frequency. The inhibition of contraction induced by stimulation of the pre-plexal pelvic nerve was antagonize

Sympathetic Norepinephrine Modulates Inflammatory Activation in Intestinal Muscularis Resident Macrophages via Beta1-Adrenergic Receptors.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal muscularis resident macrophages (MMφ) are a specialized subset of tissue macrophages involved in local inflammatory regulation. Although sympathetic nerves are anatomically associated with MMφ, the mechanisms underlying their interaction remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the role of adrenergic receptor signaling in modulating MMφ activation during lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation. METHODS: MMφ were isolated from mouse intestinal muscularis for receptor profiling. The macrophage-like cell line J774.1 was stimulated with LPS, with or without adren

Daily Energy Drink Intake and Arrhythmia Resistant to Direct Current Cardioversion.

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a common arrhythmia, often responsive to pharmacologic intervention or electrical cardioversion. Resistance to direct current cardioversion (DCCV) is uncommon and can be clinically challenging. Lifestyle factors, including dietary stimulant intake, may influence arrhythmia dynamics and treatment responsiveness. We present a case of a 26-year-old female known to have SVT, who presented with six hours of palpitations, with a past medical history of successful cryoablation performed in 2021 for atrial tachycardia originating from tissue near the atrioventricu

Bionic blink improves real-time eye closure in unilateral facial paralysis.

Facial paralysis is the inability to move facial muscles thereby impairing the ability to blink and make facial expressions. Depending on the localization of the nerve malfunction it is subcategorised into central or peripheral and is usually unilateral. This leads to health deficits stemming from corneal dryness and social ostracization. Objective: Electrical stimulation shows promise as a method through which to restore the blink function and as a result improve eye health. However, it is unknown whether a real-time, myoelectrically controlled, neurostimulating device can be used as assistanc

TRPA1, but not TRPV1, is involved in the increase of the non-adrenergic non-cholinergic outflow induced by hydrogen sulfide in pithed rats.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gasotransmitter that modulates the peripheral transmission regulating the vascular tone. In vitro studies have suggested that H2S induces vasodilation by stimulating capsaicin-sensitive sensory neurons. This study was designed to determine the effects of H2S on the non-adrenergic/non-cholinergic (NANC) outflow in the pithed rat, and the underlying mechanisms. For that purpose, 72 male Wistar rats were anesthetized, pithed and the carotid, femoral and jugular veins were cannulated and then divided into two main sets. The first set of animals (n = 48) was used to dete

Intraoperative Neurophysiology for Optimization of Percutaneous Spinothalamic Cordotomy for Intractable Cancer Pain.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous ablation of the cervical spinothalamic tract (STT) remains a therapeutic remedy for intractable cancer pain. However, it is accompanied by the risk of collateral damage to essential spinal cord circuitry, including the corticospinal tract (CST). Recent studies describe threshold-based mapping of the CST with the objective of motor bundle preservation during intramedullary spinal cord and supratentorial surgery. OBJECTIVE: To assess the possibility that application of spinal cord mapping using intraoperative neuromonitoring in percutaneous cordotomy procedures may aid

Characterization of plasma cytokine response to intraperitoneally administered LPS & subdiaphragmatic branch vagus nerve stimulation in rat model.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been on the forefront of inflammatory disorder research and has yielded many promising results. Questions remain, however, about the biological mechanisms of such treatments and the inconsistencies in the methods used in research efforts. Here, we aimed to clarify the inflammatory response to intraperitoneal (IP) injections of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in rats, while analyzing corresponding effects of electrical stimulation to subdiaphragmatic branches (anterior gastric, accessory celiac, and hepatic) of the left vagus nerve. We accomplished an in-depth charact

Disease-specific longevity of impulse generators in deep brain stimulation and review of the literature.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) represents an established and internationally approved therapy for movement disorders. In the present retrospective analysis, we evaluated disease-specific longevity of dual channel impulse generators (IPG) used in different movement disorders. We correlated the battery lifetime with electrical stimulation settings, "total electrical energy delivered" (TEED), stimulation modi (monopolar, double monopolar and bipolar) and targets. Specifically, we reviewed the longevity and stimulation settings of 464 IPGs implanted between 1996 until 2011 in a single university cen
