Pityriasis Rosea: An Updated Review.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rosea is a common acute, self-limited papulosquamous dermatosis that primarily affects children and young adults. The condition and its clinical variants may pose a diagnostic challenge, especially in the absence of the herald patch. OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to familiarize pediatricians with clinical manifestations, evaluation, diagnosis, and management of pityriasis rosea. METHODS: A search was conducted in March 2020 in Pubmed Clinical Queries using the key term " pityriasis rosea". The search strategy included all clinical trials (including open trials, non-ran

Molecular epidemiology of Bordetella pertussis and analysis of vaccine antigen genes from clinical isolates from Shenzhen, China.

BACKGROUND: Although pertussis cases globally have been controlled through the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), the incidence of pertussis has increased significantly in recent years, with a "resurgence" of pertussis occurring in developed countries with high immunization coverage. Attracted by its fast-developing economy, the population of Shenzhen has reached 14 million and has become one of the top five largest cities by population size in China. The incidence of pertussis here was about 2.02/100,000, far exceeding that of the whole province and the whole country (both < 1/100,000)

Prevalence and characterization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus carrying mecA or mecC and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus in dairy sheep farms in central Italy.

Between January and May 2012, a total of 286 bulk tank milk samples from dairy sheep farms located in central Italy were tested for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. One hundred fifty-three samples were positive for S. aureus (53.5%), with an average count of 2.53 log cfu/mL. A total of 679 S. aureus colonies were screened for methicillin resistance by the cefoxitin disk diffusion test, and 104 selected cefoxitin-susceptible isolates were also tested for their susceptibility to other antimicrobials representative of the most relevant classes active against Staphylococcus spp. by using the

[Investigation of macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin B resistance in Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from clinical samples by phenotypical and genotypical methods].

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common cause of both community and healthcare-associated infections. As staphylococci have developed resistance to various antibiotics, initially to penicillins then to methicillin and glycopeptides and have the ability to cause epidemics, they continue to be a major problem from past to present. Methicillin resistance gave rise to the use of alternative antibiotics such as macrolides, however worldwide development of macrolide resistance limited the use of these antibiotics. Macrolide resistance occurs either through target site modification (MLS(B) ph

Effect of macrolides as part of initial empiric therapy on medical outcomes for hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to compare the outcomes of hospitalized patients receiving a nonpseudomonal third-generation cephalosporin with or without a macrolide for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). BACKGROUND: The initial treatment of CAP is usually based on empirically selected antibiotic therapy. The need for coverage of atypical pathogens in hospitalized patients is widely debated, and regional variations may exist. METHODS: All patients admitted to a community hospital or to a university hospital for 1 year who were aged > or =18 years and had a principal

Alternative cyclosporine metabolic pathways and toxicity.

There are some indications from clinical studies (41,43) for aberrant cyclosporine metabolism resulting in formation of potentially toxic metabolites. When the activity of cytochrome P450 3A enzymes is low, more substrate is available for hypothetical alternative pathways of cyclosporine. There are several reasons for low P450 3A activity in a liver graft such as inter-individual genetic variability (43,49,84), cold ischemia and reperfusion damage, changes of the P450 activity during cholestasis (85) or other liver diseases (86), the influence of cytokines (87) and drug interactions such as in

Mutations in MexB that affect the efflux of antibiotics with cytoplasmic targets.

Drug efflux pumps such as MexAB-OprM from Pseudomonas aeruginosa confer resistance to a wide range of chemically different compounds. Within the tripartite assembly, the inner membrane protein MexB is mainly responsible for substrate recognition. Recently, considerable advances have been made in elucidating the drug efflux pathway through the large periplasmic domains of resistance-nodulation-division (RND) transporters. However, little is known about the role of amino acids in other parts of the protein. We have investigated the role of two conserved phenylalanine residues that are aligned ar

Identification of cytochrome P450 3A1/2 as the major P450 isoform responsible for the metabolism of fentanyl by rat liver microsomes.

The metabolism of fentanyl was investigated using rat liver microsomes to determine whether fentanyl is metabolized by rat liver microsomal cytochrome P450 and, if so, which isoform is responsible for the metabolism. Microsomes isolated from rats pretreated with phenobarbital were more active in metabolizing fentanyl than were microsomes from saline controls. The major metabolic pathway of fentanyl was an oxidative N-dealkylation to norfentanyl, which was detected by a gas chromatograph-mass selective detector (GC-MSD) method. The apparent Vm values for microsomes isolated from saline- and phe

Urocortins improve dystrophic skeletal muscle structure and function through both PKA- and Epac-dependent pathways.

In Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the absence of dystrophin causes progressive muscle wasting and premature death. Excessive calcium influx is thought to initiate the pathogenic cascade, resulting in muscle cell death. Urocortins (Ucns) have protected muscle in several experimental paradigms. Herein, we demonstrate that daily s.c. injections of either Ucn 1 or Ucn 2 to 3-week-old dystrophic mdx(5Cv) mice for 2 weeks increased skeletal muscle mass and normalized plasma creatine kinase activity. Histological examination showed that Ucns remarkably reduced necrosis in the diaphragm and slow- and fa

Bacteriological Profile of Diabetic Foot Ulcer With Special Reference to Biofilm Formation.

Introduction Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by abnormally high sugar levels in the blood for prolonged periods of time. The world's largest number of diabetics resides in India, making it the world's diabetic capital, with a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) incidence of around 8-17%. Due to the polymicrobial and multidrug resistant (MDR) nature of DFUs, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is of high importance to help treat patients effectively and prevent the development of MDR bacteria. The ability to form biofilms is a significant additive to virulence of an organism that
