Excessive mechanical loading or acute trauma to intervertebral discs (IVDs) is thought to contribute to degeneration and pain. However, the exact mechanisms by which mechanical injury initiates and promotes degeneration remain unclear. Vitamin A is the only known compound that produces spontaneous fractures in rats. In an effort to resolve the molecular mechanism behind this effect, we fed young male rats high doses of vitamin A and performed microarray analysis of diaphyseal bone with and without marrow after 1 week, i.e., just before the first fractures appeared. This paper presents the results of a study aimed at identifying the immunopathological and morphometrical characteristics of liver granulomas induced by the parasite Schistosoma haematobium. The OF1 mouse is a susceptible host for experimental infection with the Egyptian NAMRU-3 strain of S. haematobium. Formation of liver granulomas started after 13-14 weeks of infection. We report a case of fibroblastic rheumatism (FR). Only eight other cases of this recently described entity have been reported previously. The effect of the administration of acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) on normal fracture healing was examined in a rat fracture model.
