PURPOSE: To describe the technique of cervical esophagostomy with indwelling catheter for the collection of secretions and study of gastric emptying.
METHODS: Esophagostomy was performed in 14 dogs, and a tube was introduced into the animals' stomachs and maintained previous for eight weeks. The technique consisted of opening the left lateral surface of the neck for insertion of the tube, with the aid of a Mixter forceps, and the subsequent subcutaneous tunneling and exteriorization of the catheter on the dorsum of the animals.

A small number of cavernous liver hemangiomas in infants cause serious symptoms, requiring active treatment. We report two newborns with giant liver hemangiomas, treated by intra-arterial embolization. The babies presented at 2 - 8 days after birth with tachypnoea and cardiac dilation. 47 children with gastroschisis were operated at the Hannover Medical School between 1980 and 1995. The average gestation period was the 36th week of pregnancy with an average birthweight of 2370 gr. We performed percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in 30 patients with prolonged swallowing difficulty (> 4 weeks duration). The average procedure time was 25 minutes. PEG insertion was done on an outpatient basis in four patients. The complication rate was 10% and included failed insertion, peristomal infection and herniation of the gastric mucosa at the gastrostomy exist site. Home enteral nutrition (HEN) is an established method of long term nutritional support. Many patients receiving HEN have Crohn's disease complicated by intestinal failure and malnutrition, including magnesium deficiency. It is unknown if HEN can correct magnesium deficiency or if patients on HEN can become magnesium deficient. This study reports the use of ethanol/water solutions in conjunction with normal rat chow diet to provide up to 30 g/kg/day ethanol to study animals. By additionally supplying agar gels containing ethanol, voluntary intake of ethanol was raised to a possible maximum of 48 g/kg/day.
