In this study, nested PCR using H1-d primers, which is specific for Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, was compared to blood culture and the single-tube Widal test. Results indicate that nested PCR can be used as a gold standard to determine the cutoff titer of the Widal test for diagnosis of typhoid fever.

Dengue fever (DF) and Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are widespread in Southeast Asia. An outbreak of DF/DHF in Delhi in 2003 started during September, reached its peak in October-November, and lasted until early December. This study describes the clinical and laboratory data of the 185 cases of DF/DHF admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital, New Delhi. The mean age of the patients was 26 +/- 10 years. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a serological survey for Q-fever among febrile patients in Bamako and Mopti (Mali) and investigated the main risk factors for seroconversion.
METHODS: Blood samples from 156 febrile patients were collected in healthcare facilities of Bamako and Mopti and examined with the microimmunofluorescence test.

We describe a 7-year-old boy with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) complicated by polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) with distinct angiographic findings. The 17D-derived yellow fever (YF) vaccines have had an excellent record of their safety among millions of recipients. Recently, extensive viral dissemination in seven vaccinees, aged 5-79 years, with just one survivor posed a serious challenge for vaccine manufacturers. Prospective evaluations of yellow fever vaccine bulk suspensions for their viscerotropism and neurovirulence in primates or an alternate animal should minimize identical viral dissemination among prospective recipients of YF vaccines.
