Downregulation of human polymorphonuclear cell activities exerted by microorganisms belonging to the alpha-2 subgroup of Proteobacteria (Afipia felis and Rochalimaea henselae).

Intracellular pathogens have evolved effective mechanisms in order to survive in an intracellular environment, thus avoiding destruction by phagocytic cells. In this regard, a correlation between resistance to phagocytic killing and expression of pathogenic potency has been established. In this report, we have studied the interaction between human polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and two gram-negative microorganisms, Afipia felis and Rochalimaea henselae, which belong to the alpha-2 subgroup of the class Proteobacteria. A. falis has been previously proposed as the causative agent of Cat Scratch D

Late infection in healed fractures after open reduction and internal fixation.

Nine patients with normal fracture healing after open reduction and internal fixation presented with late infection 15 months to 19 years after injury. Eight of the nine patients had a history of pain at the fracture site for 3 weeks or longer. Elevated temperature and white blood cell count were unreliable indicators of infection. Six patients had an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate that correlated with osteomyelitis. Roentgenograms showed resorption around the implant in seven patients and a small nidus in two patients. There was a change in position of fixation screws in four patient

In-vitro susceptibility of cefoperazone-susceptible and -resistant gram-negative rods to cefoperazone plus sulbactam, other beta-lactams, aminoglycosides and quinolone.

We compared the in-vitro activity of cefoperazone-sulbactam (2:1), other beta-lactams, amino-glycosides and ciprofloxacin against cefoperazone-susceptible and -resistant nosocomial gram-negative bacilli. Resistant isolates including Pseudomonas aeruginosa were susceptible to cefoperazone-sulbactam; the susceptible isolates had modestly increased susceptibility to the combination. Sulbactam, by itself, was poorly active. Among others tested, ciprofloxacin and imipenem were the most active. No inoculum effect was seen with cefoperazone-sulbactam and this drug combination had a prolonged post-ant

Characterization, in vitro susceptibility, and clinical significance of CDC group HB-5 from Rwanda.

From June 1984 until July 1988, CDC group HB-5 isolates were recovered from the exudates of genital ulcers in 25 of 675 (3.6%) patients (204 women, 471 men) in Kigali, Rwanda. Among a group of 145 men presenting with urethritis but without genital ulcers, a positive culture for HB-5 of a specimen from the coronal groove of the penis of only 1 man (0.7%) was found. During the same period, the organism was not obtained in cultures of vaginal specimens from 838 women without genital ulcer disease. The main biochemical characteristics of the isolated microorganisms included weak oxidase positivity

Aztreonam in the treatment of aerobic, gram-negative bacillary infections in pediatric patients.

Aztreonam was administered to 20 children diagnosed as having any of the following infections: urinary tract infection, pneumonia, meningitis, and abscess of the appendix. Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of aztreonam for these bacteria ranged from 0.03 to 0.5 micrograms/ml. All patients were clinically and bacteriologically cured within 5-16 days of treatment. Six months after completion of therapy, patients who had had meningitis appeared to be free of any neurologic sequelae. The antibiotic was well tole

Microbial contamination of continuous drip feedings.

We evaluated the extent and effects of bacterial contamination of an open continuous enteral feeding system. Eighty-two quantitative enteral feeding cultures and clinical data were obtained during 8 days of observation on each of 33 patients. Cultures of appropriate sites were obtained on febrile patients and compared to the enteral feeding culture. Gram negative bacilli (GNB) in the enteral feeding correlated with abdominal distension in the patients (10 of 12 patients with GNB compared to 5 of 21 without GNB; p less than 0.01). Nine of the 10 patients with GNB and distension were receiving s

Changes in endogenous microflora among febrile granulocytopenic patients receiving empiric antibiotic therapy: implications for fungal superinfection.

The ecologic effect of empiric systemic antibiotic therapy on the endogenous microflora was evaluated in 83 febrile granulocytopenic patients with cancer who were randomly allocated to receive moxalactam plus ticarcillin (45 patients) or tobramycin plus ticarcillin (38 patients) for suspected infection. Serial surveillance cultures of the nasal passages, oropharynx and feces performed twice a week showed that patients who received the former regimen had higher elimination rates and significantly lower acquisition rates (p = 0.027) for aerobic gram-negative bacilli than did patients who receive

Pneumonia caused by gram-negative bacilli: an overview.

Colonization of the oropharynx by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enteric gram-negative bacilli in acutely ill or debilitated patients, alcoholics, diabetics, and persons with chronic bronchitis may lead to pneumonia. Although gram staining of sputum may provide immediate etiologic clues, the diagnosis is proven only by isolation of the pathogen from blood or pleural fluid or by various invasive techniques since expectorated specimens from highly susceptible patients are often contaminated with aerobic gram-negative bacilli colonizing the oropharynx. However, restricting the definition of cases to

Endotoxin in cotton dust and respiratory function decrement among cotton workers in an experimental cardroom.

To study the various reactions of gram-negative bacteria and their endotoxins observed in workers exposed to cotton dust, experiments were undertaken where cotton mill workers carded cottons from different geographic locations, each containing different amounts of bacterial endotoxins. Exposure was determined as the vertical elutriator dust and endotoxin levels. Measurements were made of the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and the number of blood neutrophils before and after work, and the prevalence of symptoms of byssinosis was recorded. There was a significant correlation betwe…

Ozone ultrafine bubble water sterilizes Porphyromonas gingivalis and neutralizes its virulence factors.

Periodontitis is caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major Gram-negative periodontal pathogen, produces virulence factors such as gingipains, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and lipoproteins, which contribute to tissue destruction. Ozone ultrafine bubble water (OUFBW) has been studied for its antimicrobial effects against various bacteria and toxin protein inactivation. This present study aimed to explore the effects of OUFBW on P. gingivalis and its virulence factors. OUFBW was generated and applied to P. gingivalis to assess bactericidal activity. OUFBW effects on morphol…
