Mixed-type cryoglobulins are strongly associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and may lead to vasculitis with renal involvement. The treatment of this condition is antiviral therapy for HCV, but this may be ineffective or not tolerated because of side effects. Alternative strategies such as immunosuppressive drugs and plasmapheresis are of limited use, especially in patients after liver transplantation (LTx). We describe an LTx patient with cryoglobulinaemia-associated glomerulonephritis, who was treated successfully with the B cell depleting monoclonal antibody rituximab.

This study investigates the effects of noradrenaline injection on a range of immunological activities in Sydney rock oysters (Saccostrea glomerata). Noradrenaline caused a decrease in most of the immunological parameters tested. OBJECTIVE: Juvenile dermatomyositis (DM) is a chronic inflammatory myopathy of childhood primarily affecting the muscles and skin. Treatment for juvenile DM is often difficult, and conventional therapies include corticosteroids and other immune suppressants. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a topical hyaluronic acid (HA) preparation (0.2%) in the management of recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU).
METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with RAU participated in a randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind trial to evaluate the efficacy of the topical HA and preparation. Outcome measures include soreness relief on immediate application (recorded over 60 min). Lymphomatoid granulomatosis is a rare angiocentric and angiodestructive disease, which commonly involves the lungs but also the brain, kidneys, liver and skin. This report describes the case of a 33-yr-old female with an aggressive form of lymphoid granulomatosis treated with an anti-CD20 antibody. Dramatic radiological improvement was seen at the fourth week. However, the patient died at home 1 month after the last rituximab administration from a massive haemoptysis.

The most severe complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection is cerebral malaria (CM). Cerebral malaria implies the presence of neurological features, especially impaired consciousness.
