18F-NaF PET/CT for the evaluation of temporomandibular joint disorder.

AIM: To investigate the usefulness of a quantitative parameter (maximum standardised uptake value [SUVmax]) of 18F-sodium fluoride (NaF) positron-emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) for the evaluation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder (TMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-six TMD patients (male: female=14:62, age=40.3±17.1 years, bilateral: unilateral=40:36) with 152 TMJs were enrolled. The 18F-NaF PET/CT parameter (SUVmax) was compared with the presence of TMJ arthralgia (arthralgic=86, non-arthralgic=66) and clinical subtypes based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria

Relationships between temporomandibular joint disk displacements and condylar volume.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between mandibular condylar volume and disk displacement status in adult males and females. STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated 122 temporomandibular joints in 61 patients using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). MRI data were used to assign disk status as normal disk position (NR), disk displacement with reduction (DDR), or disk displacement without reduction (DDNR). CT data were used to calculate total condylar volume and its components, cortical volume, and trabecular volume. The relationships among condyla

Tinnitus in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders: Is it a Specific Somatosensory Tinnitus Subtype?

The most significant otologic symptoms, consisting of ear pain, tinnitus, dizziness, hearing loss and auricolar "fullness", generally arise within the auditory system, often are associated with extra auricolar disorders, particularly disorder of the temporo-mandibular joint. In our study we examined a sample of 200 consecutive patients who had experienced severe disabling symptom. The patiens came to maxillofacial specialist assessment for temporomandibular disorder. Each patient was assessed by a detailed anamnestic and clinical temporomandibular joint examination and they are divided into fi

Emergency metacarpophalangeal arthroplasty with bone grafting for traumatic joint destruction.

Emergency arthroplasty of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) remains a valuable treatment option in patients with MCPJ destruction but may raise challenges in the event of substantial metacarpal and/or phalangeal bone defects. We report three cases of MCPJ destruction with bone defects at the proximal first phalanx treated with emergency silicone implant arthroplasty combined with bone grafting.

Lesser Metatarsophalangeal Joint Instability: Advancements in Plantar Plate Reconstruction.

The plantar plate and associated collateral ligaments are the main stabilizers of each of the lesser metatarsophalangeal joints. Although clinical examination and plain radiographs are usually sufficient to establish the diagnosis of a plantar plate tear, MRI or fluoroscopic arthrograms may help in specific cases. Recent results with a dorsal approach to plantar plate repair are promising with respect to pain relief and patient satisfaction.

Vascular density of inferior tibiofibular joint - cadaveric experimental study.

The study was carried out on 50 human lower legs obtained during autopsies (KBET: 122.6120.315.2016). The anatomy of the joint was studied using classical anatomical description methods. Based also on literature we have reviewed the current knowledge on the inferior tibiofibular joint blood supply considering the important clinically aspect - vascular density. Authors of this paper postulate relatively low vascular density of the region described and potential worse condition for healing in case of injury or after surgical procedures performed. We also postulate that ligament screws should be

EFFECT OF HEEL LIFTS ON PATELLOFEMORAL JOINT STRESS DURING RUNNING.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain is a debilitating injury for many recreational runners. Excessive patellofemoral joint stress may be the underlying source of pain and interventions often focus on ways to reduce patellofemoral joint stress. PURPOSE: Heel lifts have been used as an intervention within Achilles tendon rehabilitation programs and to address leg length discrepancies. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of running with heel lifts on patellofemoral joint stress, patellofemoral stress impulse, quadriceps force, step length, cadence, and other related kinematic and spa

First and Second Metatarsophalangeal Joint Open Dislocations: A Case Report.

Dislocation of multiple metatarsophalangeal joint is an uncommon injury. The mechanism of injury is a high energy force distal to proximal with foot in hyperextension at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. The acute hyperextension of the toe at the moment of injury causes avulsion of the plantar part of the capsule from the junction of head and neck of the metatarsal. If the collateral ligaments remain intact, they maintain the locked fibrocartilaginous plate over the dorsum of the head of the metatarsal, making closed reduction impossible. We report a case of simultaneous 1st and 2nd MTP joi

Cartilage matrix remodelling differs by disease state and joint type.

Dramatic alterations in mechanical properties have been documented for osteoarthritic (OA) cartilage. However, the matrix composition underlying these changes has not been mapped and their aetiology is not entirely understood. We hypothesised that an understanding of the cartilage matrix heterogeneity could provide insights into the origin of these OA-related alterations. We generated serial transverse cryo sections for 7 different cartilage conditions: 2 joint sites (knee and hip), 2 disease states (healthy and OA) and 3 tissue depths (superficial, middle and deep). By laser capture microscop

Leg symptoms associated with sacroiliac joint disorder and related pain.

OBJECTIVE: The symptoms of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) disorders are usually detected in the buttock and groin, and occasionally referred to the thigh and leg. However, lumbar disorders also cause symptoms in these same body regions. The presence of a characteristic, symptomatic pattern in the legs would be useful for diagnosing SIJ disorders. This study aimed to identify specific leg symptoms in patients with SIJ pain originating from the posterior sacroiliac ligament and determine the rate of occurrence of these symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The source population consisted of 365 consecutive p

Tarsusmeter: Development of a wearable device for ankle joint impedance estimation.

We present the development and basic evaluation of a new wearable device for estimation of ankle joint impedance called Tarsusmeter. The device is intended for application with persons with locomotion disabilities to quantify the ankle joint impedance, especially in cases of spasticity where the joint's impedance is expected to differ significantly from healthy persons. The lack of a simple and light weight solution to provide objective evaluation of ankle joint impedance motivates the design criteria of this device to be as such. The target application is also to quantify variable stiffness a

Correlation of the Features of the Lumbar Multifidus Muscle With Facet Joint Osteoarthritis.

Facet joint osteoarthritis is considered a consequence of the aging process; however, there is evidence that it may be associated with degenerative changes of other structures. The goal of this study was to investigate the correlation between lumbar multifidus muscle features and facet joint osteoarthritis. This retrospective study included 160 patients who had acute or chronic low back pain and were diagnosed with facet joint osteoarthritis on computed tomography scan. Morphometric parameters, including cross-sectional area, muscle-fat index, and percentage of bilateral multifidus asymmetry a

Diffuse pigmented villonodular synovitis in knee joint: diagnosis and treatment.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare proliferative condition of the synovium. Although the condition can present in any joint, the knee is the most commonly affected site. Despite being a benign condition, pigmented villonodular synovitis is often aggressive, with marked extra-articular extension in some cases. Monoarticular involvement occurs in two forms: localized and diffuse. The latter is more common, with a high recurrence rate. There is no standard method of management of this lesion. Open surgery is a classical and effective method for treatment. Arthroscopic synovectomy, however

Mesenchymal stem cells in the aseptic loosening of total joint replacements.

Peri-prosthetic osteolysis remains as the main long-term complication of total joint replacement surgery. Research over four decades has established implant wear as the main culprit for chronic inflammation in the peri-implant tissues and macrophages as the key cells mediating the host reaction to implant-derived wear particles. Wear debris activated macrophages secrete inflammatory mediators that stimulate bone resorbing osteoclasts; thus bone loss in the peri-implant tissues is increased. However, the balance of bone turnover is not only dictated by osteoclast-mediated bone resorption but al
