Understanding the movement of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment is critical to managing their spread. To assess potential ARG transport through the air via urban bioaerosols in cities with poor sanitation, we quantified ARGs and a mobile integron (MI) in ambient air over periods spanning rainy and dry seasons in Kanpur, India (n = 53), where open wastewater canals (OWCs) are prevalent. Gene targets represented major antibiotic groups-tetracyclines (tetA), fluoroquinolines (qnrB), and beta-lactams (blaTEM)-and a class 1 mobile integron (intI1). Over half of air samples lo

The potential adverse impacts of antibiotic contamination on environmental quality are generating increasing concern. Given that an alarming amount and variety of antibiotics have been used in China, a list of priority antibiotics is urgently needed to develop regulatory frameworks to control antibiotic use and monitor environmental pollution. This study established a new method of ranking priority antibiotics based on their prevalence (Pv), occurrence (O), persistence, and bioaccumulation, and toxicity (PBT) in the environment. The Pv and O criteria were weighted and quantified using the dece

The prevalence of integrons and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a serious threat for public health in the new millennium. Although commonly detected in sites affected by strong anthropogenic pressure, in remote areas their occurrence, dissemination, and transfer to other ecosystems is poorly recognized. Remote sites are considered as a benchmark for human-induced contamination on Earth. For years glaciers were considered pristine, now they are regarded as reservoirs of contaminants, thus studies on contamination of glaciers, which may be released to other ecosystems, are highly needed. Swarming surface motility is a complex adaptation leading to multidrug antibiotic resistance and virulence factor production in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Here, we expanded previous studies to demonstrate that under swarming conditions, P. aeruginosa PA14 is more resistant to multiple antibiotics, including aminoglycosides, β-lactams, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, trimethoprim, and macrolides, than swimming cells, but is not more resistant to polymyxin B. We investigated the mechanism(s) of swarming-mediated antibiotic resistance by examining the transcriptomes of swarming cells an

Sequences of 105 Aeromonas species plasmids were probed for acquired anti-microbial resistance (AMR) genes using a bioinformatics approach. The plasmids showed no positive linear correlation between size and GC content and up to 55 acquired AMR genes were found in 39 (37%) plasmids after in silico screening for resistance against 15 antibiotic drug classes. Overall, potential multiple antibiotic resistance (p-MAR) index ranged from 0.07 to 0.53. Up to 18 plasmids were predicted to mediate multiple drug resistance (MDR). Plasmids pS121-1a (A. salmonicida), pWCX23_1 (A. hydrophila) and pASP-a58

We determined the immediate impact of exposure to antibiotic-treated animals on housing soil microbiome and resistome. Fecal (n = 36) and soil (n = 108) samples from dairy calves (n = 6) treated with and without florfenicol over 30 days were collected. There were temporary changes in the gut microbiome of antibiotic-treated calves as measured by Shannon diversity (16S rRNA gene sequencing; P = 0.03), but not in the housing soil microbiome (P > 0.05). Droplet-digital PCR demonstrated that floR gene increased by 1-log in soil exposed to treated animals (P < 0.001), but it remained relatively sta

INTRODUCTION: A large number of antibiotics are used for the treatment of uncomplicated cystitis owing to its high morbidity. As the administration of antibiotics for uncomplicated cystitis may be considered an example of inappropriate use, outpatient antimicrobial stewardship for this condition is important. We evaluated the current pharmacoepidemiology trends for the treatment of uncomplicated cystitis in Japan to predict stewardship strategies.
METHODS: This descriptive observational study analyzed data from an anonymized claims database of employees and their family members covered by the

Impetigo, scabies, cellulitis and abscesses are common in Australian Aboriginal children. These conditions adversely affect wellbeing and are associated with serious long term sequelae, including invasive infection and post-infectious complications, such as acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis and acute rheumatic fever, which occurs at the highest documented rates in the world in remote Aboriginal communities. Observational research in remote communities in northern Australia has demonstrated a high concurrent burden of scabies and impetigo and their post-infectious complications. Few d

We studied a commensal colistin-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from a swine cecum sample collected at a slaughter, in Portugal. Antimicrobial susceptibility phenotype of E. coli LV23529 showed resistance to colistin at a minimum inhibitory concentration of 4 mg/L. Whole genome of E. coli LV23529 was sequenced using a MiSeq system and the assembled contigs were analyzed for the presence of antibiotic resistance and plasmid replicon types using bioinformatics tools. We report a novel mcr-1 gene variant (mcr-1.9), carried by an IncX4 plasmid, where one-point mutation at nucleotide T1238C lea

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem resistance is defined as in vitro non-susceptibility to any carbapenem and/or documented production of a carbapenemase. This feature has rapidly spread worldwide among clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae, mostly Klebsiella spp., and is associated with diverse molecular mechanisms. Carbapenem resistance is often associated with resistance to all traditional β-lactams and other classes of antibiotics, denoting a typical example of an extensively drug-resistant phenotype.
OBJECTIVES: To summarize and interpret in a balanced manner the most clinically relevant data in t

Despite universal susceptibility to β-lactams, resistance to second-line antimicrobials (e.g. erythromycin) is increasingly common among group A Streptococcus (GAS). To better understand the frequency of regional GAS antimicrobial resistance, we screened a previously described GAS strain collection from Houston, TX, USA, for resistance to commonly used antimicrobials. A total of 100/929 (10.8 %) showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial. Tetracycline resistance was identified in 52 (5.6 %) GAS strains. The cumulative frequency of erythromycin and clindamycin resistance [macrolide (M) and

Resistance-nodulation-cell division multidrug efflux pumps are membrane proteins that catalyze the export of drugs and toxic compounds out of bacterial cells. Within the hydrophobe-amphiphile subfamily, these multidrug-resistant proteins form trimeric efflux pumps. The drug efflux process is energized by the influx of protons. Here, we use single-particle cryo-electron microscopy to elucidate the structure of the Acinetobacter baumannii AdeB multidrug efflux pump embedded in lipidic nanodiscs to a resolution of 2.98 Å. We found that each AdeB molecule within the trimer preferentially takes the

The presence of antimicrobial and pesticide residues in products sourced from peasant family farms selected from eight regions of Chile was determined. A total of 204 samples were analyzed from family farm products, including honey, lettuce, tomato, strawberry, raspberry, lamb meat, and cow's milk. Pesticide residues were found in 43 of 107 samples tested for them, but only 4 samples had concentrations that exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by Chilean regulations. As for animal products, 2 of 15 cow's milk samples tested positive for permethrin residues; however, these concentrati

Since the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), an increase in the incidence of disease attributable to serotype 15A-ST63 (sequence type 63) pneumococci has been observed in many regions worldwide. We conducted a nationwide pediatric pneumococcal infection surveillance study between 2012 and 2014 in Japan. In the surveillance study, we detected multidrug-resistant serotype 15A-CC63 (clonal complex 63) strains (resistant to macrolides, penicillin, cefotaxime, and meropenem); in this study, we analyzed these resistant isolates to determine the dynamics and mechanism of resistan
