Diet-gut microbiota-immune-brain interactions in aging: mechanistic pathways and clinical implications.

With rising life expectancy and global population aging, cognitive decline has become a major and growing public health challenge. Advances in nutritional neuroscience highlight the gut microbiota-immune-brain axis as a key biological pathway through which diet may influence cognitive function during aging. The gut microbiota, a metabolically active ecosystem, responds dynamically to habitual dietary patterns and produces bioactive metabolites capable of modulating immune signaling, neuroinflammation, and neuronal function. Diets rich in microbiota-modulating foods (e.g., dietary fiber, polyph

Sagittal Plane Kinematic Deviations and Spatio-Temporal Gait Characteristics in Children with Idiopathic Toe Walking: A Comparative Analysis Using Statistical Parametric Mapping.

Background/Objectives: Idiopathic Toe Walking (ITW) is a pediatric gait disorder characterized by persistent toe-to-heel ambulation in the absence of neurological, orthopedic, or developmental abnormalities. While spatio-temporal parameters often remain within normal ranges, subtle but clinically significant kinematic deviations may underlie compensatory mechanisms that sustain gait functionality. This study aims to evaluate spatio-temporal and sagittal plane kinematic differences between children with ITW and typically developing peers using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM). Methods: A co

Design and rationale of the Botswana Smoking Abstinence Reinforcement Trial: a protocol for a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: With expanded and sustained availability of HIV treatment resulting in substantial improvements in life expectancy, the need to address modifiable risk factors associated with leading causes of death among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH), such as tobacco smoking, has increased. Tobacco use is highly prevalent among PLWH, especially in southern Africa, where HIV is heavily concentrated, and many people who smoke would like to quit but are unable to do so without assistance. SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) is a well-established evidence-based approa

Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating a Care Management Model for Patients With Neuromuscular Diseases: Protocol for a Participatory Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) are often progressive conditions that can reduce quality of life and life expectancy and require long-term caregiving. As patients age, caregivers face increasing demands, often resulting in significant caregiver burden. Treatment and care are complex, and a coordinated, family-centered approach is indicated. The current care situation for individuals with NMDs and their families in Switzerland is poorly understood, and there is no standardized NMD care management available. OBJECTIVE: The proposed study aims to assess the current care practices for i

Investigation of the Impact of Preoperative Swallowing Therapy on Swallowing Function in Partial Laryngectomy.

Partial laryngectomy can substantially compromise swallowing safety and efficiency, leading to reduced swallowing-related quality of life in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Although postoperative swallowing therapy is effective in managing dysphagia, postoperative pain, fatigue, and anatomical alterations may limit early rehabilitation adherence. This study aimed to investigate whether structured preoperative swallowing therapy enhances postoperative swallowing recovery in patients undergoing partial laryngectomy. Thirty patients with HNC were included. The study group (n = 16) recei

Psychosocial and Demographic Characteristics of Children and Adolescents With Headache Presenting for Treatment in a Headache Infusion Center.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of pediatric patients have recurrent headaches, with migraine being the most common headache type. If untreated, migraine may progress to status migrainosus, a debilitating condition of prolonged duration, high pain severity, and significant disability. There is high variability in the treatment of status migrainosus including medications used and treatment setting, which may occur in the emergency room, as an inpatient admission, or, less often, in an outpatient infusion center. The paucity of research on the treatment of status migrainosus is a limitation to tre

Chronic myeloid and lymphocytic leukemias in the elderly: public health challenges in early detection and long-term care.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) predominantly affect older adults, presenting unique challenges in early detection and long-term management. The growing elderly population globally has intensified the public health burden of these chronic leukemias, particularly in low-resource settings. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the epidemiology, clinical features, early detection, and long-term care of CML and CLL in elderly populations, with a focus on public health implications and region-specific considerations. A structured literature sear

Counting costs and carbon: A decision model for greener healthcare policy.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare systems contribute approximately 5-8% of national greenhouse gas emissions in high-income countries, yet current evaluation frameworks seldom include environmental externalities. While many nations have committed to decarbonizing healthcare, operational tools that integrate environmental impacts into decision-making remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility and implications of a "health-economic-climate" model that incorporates monetized carbon emissions into conventional cost-utility analysis (CUA), using depression care in France as a case study. Rapid Diagnosis of Bacteremia in Febrile Pediatric Oncology Patients via Host-Response Infrared Spectroscopy of Blood and Machine Learning.

Bacteremia is a life-threatening complication and a leading cause of sepsis and septic shock in patients. Conventional diagnostic methods, such as blood culture, remain the clinical gold standard but require 24-72 h, often necessitating the empirical use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, which significantly contribute to the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We hypothesized that the host immune system mounts a specific, detectable systemic metabolic response to bloodstream infection, biochemically distinct from that elicited by focal bacterial infection (FBI) or viral etio

Atomically engineered Fe/Mn catalysts enable ultrafast self-sustaining water purification via oxidant-free Fenton-like electron-transfer reaction.

Green Fenton-like reactions based on monometallic single-atom dual-reaction-center systems have emerged as promising strategies for sustainable water purification owing to their oxidant-free operation and low energy demand. However, their practical deployment is often hindered by limited degradation kinetics and unresolved mechanisms. Here, we report a carbon nitride-supported Fe/Mn bimetallic catalyst composed of Fe nanoclusters and adjacent Mn single atoms (FeMn-CN) that enables ultrafast and self-sustaining pollutant degradation under oxidant-free conditions. The catalyst achieves 99.5 % re

Establishment and validation of a dual-analyte high-performance liquid chromatography method for detecting thimerosal and phenol in veterinary vaccines.

Preservatives such as thimerosal and phenol are essential for preventing microbial contamination in veterinary vaccines; however, their concentrations must be tightly controlled to minimize toxicological risks to animal health and to ensure formulation stability throughout shelf life. To meet stringent regulatory requirements for batch-release quality control and safety, precise quantification of these preservatives is critical. Accordingly, this study developed a dual-analyte high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for determining thimerosal and phenol in veterinary

Interesterified palm oil-induced maternal metabolic dysfunction programs early-life insulin resistance and inflammation in mouse offspring in a sex-specific manner.

Interesterified fats have become a common source of fat for the food industry, however, their role in metabolic programming remains poorly understood. This study investigated whether maternal consumption of a normocaloric diet containing interesterified palm oil, starting prior to conception until the end of lactation, could trigger metabolic impairments in young offspring. Female C57BL/6J mice were fed a normocaloric diet containing either palm oil (P) or interesterified palm oil (INP) for four weeks before mating and throughout gestation and lactation. After the preconceptional period, the d

Attention-Adaptive BCI-AOT System Enhances Motor Recovery and Neural Engagement After Stroke.

Stroke frequently results in long-term motor deficits that impair quality of life. Action observation therapy (AOT) has shown promise for motor recovery through engagement of the mirror neuron system (MNS), yet its passive nature and lack of attentional tracking limit its neuroplasticity efficacy. To address these limitations, we developed a closed-loop Brain-Computer Interface-integrated AOT (BCI-AOT) system employing real-time Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP)-based attention monitoring to dynamically control therapy delivery. In a within-subject crossover study, 22 individuals wi
