Trends in the global, regional, and national burden of oral conditions from 1990 to 2021: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: The WHO Global Oral Health Action Plan has set an overarching global target of achieving a 10% reduction in the prevalence of oral conditions by 2030. Robust and up-to-date information on the global burden of oral conditions is paramount to monitor progress towards this target. The aim of this systematic data analysis was to produce global, WHO region, and country-level estimates of the prevalence of, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) attributed to, untreated caries, severe periodontitis, edentulism, other oral disorders, lip and oral cavity cancer, and orofacial clefts fr

Treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

Over the last three decades, the evidence on how to best treat the cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms of patients with Alzheimer's disease has increased. Although these pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies have significantly improved health outcomes for patients with Alzheimer's disease, many lack stringent evidence of efficacy. In this second paper of the Series, we provide practical and realistic advice on how to prioritise pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to ameliorate cognitive impairment and behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. In this clin

Outcomes of immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgeries (ISBCS) performed by trainees vs consultants: a two-armed cohort study.

PURPOSE: To compare outcomes of Immediate Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgeries (ISBCS) performed by resident doctors versus consultant ophthalmologists at Moorfields Eye Hospital and its satellite centres. METHODS: The study reviewed ISBCS performed by phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implant, comparing resident ophthalmologists (Gr1) and consultant ophthalmologists (Gr2). Outcomes examined included complications, refraction (spherical equivalent (SE) > 0.5D and >1.0D from predicted target refraction), and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA logMAR) at three months post-ISBCS.

New Perspectives on Non-Invasive Cerebellar Stimulation for Social and Affective Functions in Children and Adolescents.

Cerebellar dysfunction affects socio-affective abilities beyond motor control. Recent studies suggest that non-invasive cerebellar neurostimulation can modulate social cognition networks, offering potential therapeutic benefits for children with autism, ADHD, and mood disorders. However, its application in pediatrics remains largely unexplored. This review summarizes emerging pediatric research on cerebellar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). We discuss their mechanisms, potential benefits, and safety considerations, highlighting prelimi

Differential Effects of Cerebellar tDCS on Sequential Mentalizing.

The cerebellum has been increasingly recognized for its role in social cognition, particularly in mentalizing processes. A way to measure mentalizing is the picture sequencing task, a well-established measure of social action sequencing during mentalizing of other’s beliefs. Recent studies have shown that cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation can affect social sequence processing in adults, however, the effects of different types of stimulation remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effects of a novel and more focal montage of cerebellar tDCS on the picture sequ

Paclitaxel-coated versus uncoated devices for infrainguinal endovascular revascularisation in patients with intermittent claudication (SWEDEPAD 2): a multicentre, participant-masked, registry-based, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Drug-coated devices are widely used to reduce restenosis after lower limb revascularisation in patients with peripheral artery disease, but their effect on patient-centred outcomes remains unclear. We assessed the effect of paclitaxel-coated devices on clinically important outcomes in patients with intermittent claudication undergoing infrainguinal endovascular revascularisation. METHODS: The Swedish Drug-Elution Trial in Peripheral Arterial Disease 2 (SWEDEPAD 2) was a pragmatic, nationwide, multicentre, participant-masked, registry-based, randomised controlled trial conducted at

The acceptance of ophthalmic artificial intelligence for eye diseases: a literature review and qualitative analysis.

Thorough investigations of end-users' awareness, acceptance, and concerns about ophthalmic artificial intelligence (AI) are essential to ensure its successful implementation. We conducted a literature review on the acceptance of ophthalmic AI to provide an overall insight and qualitatively analysed the quality of eligible studies using a psychological model. We identified sixteen studies and evaluated these studies based on four primary factors (i.e., performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions) and four regulating factors (i.e., gender, age, experi

Comparative cataract-lens opacification across species.

Around 12 million people globally are estimated to be blind with age-related cataract and numerous studies have sought to evaluate the causes of this lens opacification, many of these complicated by the difficulty of determining the impacts of varying aetiological factors from daylight through diet, diabetes and many more. While various experimental investigations on laboratory animals have sought to unpick these influences on lens transparency to date none has sought to evaluate age-related cataract across different animal species kept as companion animals. Here we look at a number of studies

Implantable collamer lens sizing optimization based on the anterion AS-OCT biometric parameters.

OBJECTIVES: To develop regression formulas for determining optimal Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) size based on Anterion AS-OCT (anterior segment optical coherence tomography) biometric data. METHODS: In this retrospective interventional case series, 89 patients were included in the development phase and 57 patients were included in the (internal) validation phase. The study developed the SN (Salouti-Nowroozzadeh) formula, a multiple step-wise linear regression model, incorporating anterior chamber width (ACW), lens thickness, and anterior chamber volume (ACV) as predictors, to determine opt

Wide-field OCTA quantified peripheral nonperfusion areas predict the risk of subclinical neovascularization.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the capabilities of single-shot widefield swept-source OCT angiography (SS-OCTA) in detecting subclinical retinal neovascularization (RNV), quantifying nonperfusion areas (NPAs), and exploring the relations between NPAs and subclinical RNV in eyes graded as nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). METHODS: Eyes clinically graded as moderate to severe NPDR underwent SS-OCTA imaging. Expert graders identified subclinical RNV, defined as vessels with a flow signal above the internal limiting membrane on OCTA that are not visible on dilated fundus examination. This id

A thematic analysis of patients' experiences of receiving treatment for Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A positive patient experience is a key element of quality healthcare but data on the patient experience is rarely collected as part of routine care. This study analysed survey and discussion group comments from patients treated for neovascular AMD (nAMD) treatment to identify key elements of the patient experience. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Free text comments from an online Macular Society member survey and quotes from subsequent, local, in-person patient discussion groups were reviewed. Thematic analysis was used to code the responses and to identify major themes. RESULTS: An

Determinants of visual functions in patients with early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration: the PEONY study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although decline in visual functions have been reported in eyes with non-advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD), it is not known if visual functions in these eyes are influenced by structural changes on optical coherence tomography (OCT). We investigated the association between known OCT changes with photopic and scotopic visual functions. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants aged 55 years or over with early or intermediate AMD in at least 1 eye, and controls with healthy maculae and were included. Associations between visual functions and retinal structural changes
