Magnetically controlled growing rods in the management of early onset scoliosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Early onset scoliosis (EOS) presents in patients younger than 10 years. Magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR) were developed as an outpatient distraction system for EOS, allowing to avoid multiple surgeries. This systematic review investigated the efficacy and feasibility of MCGR in EOS. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Google scholar, Embase, and Scopus were accessed in May 2022. All the clinical trials which investigate the role of MCGR for early onset scoliosis were accessed. Only studies reporting data in patients

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Patients with Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia is a poorly understood pain syndrome. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation therapy and is commonly applied for the management of fibromyalgia. However, controversy about its efficacy remains. Therefore, a meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of rTMS for fibromyalgia syndrome. METHODS: Four medical databases and one physiotherapy database were screened for randomized controlled trials. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) score, Beck Depression Inven

Positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging as a research tool in musculoskeletal conditions.

Compared to positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), the uptake of PET- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been slow, even more so in clinical practice compared to the (pre-)clinical research setting. However, for applications in musculoskeletal (MSK) research, the combination of PET and MRI into a single modality offers attractive advantages over other imaging modalities. Most importantly, MRI has exquisite soft-tissue detail without the use of contrast agents or ionizing radiation, superior bone marrow visualization, and an extensive spectrum of distinct multiparametric a

Post-COVID-19 Myositis Based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Case Report.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes COVID-19, which is known to cause fever, dry cough, exhaustion, headache, and loss of taste and smell. Although fever, sore throat, and cough have historically been the utmost characteristic symptoms of the illness, published case reports have recently started to emphasize additional uncommon and unusual presentations of infection with the coronavirus. In COVID, the musculoskeletal system is seldomly involved. In addition to reviewing the causes and imaging characteristics of COVID-19-related illnesses of the musculoskelet

Clinical, radiological, and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of axial spondyloarthritis with late onset.

We aimed to investigate the clinical, diagnostic, and imaging features of patients with late onset axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) with initial symptom manifestation aged over 45 years. Participants with axial SpA were consecutively recruited. Clinical, demographic, blood, and imaging parameters were compared between the groups with early (≤45 years) and late onset (>45 years) at a cross-sectional level. Logistic regressions were used to determine the independent associations with axial SpA with late onset. A total of 455 participants were recruited. Among them, 70 (15.4%) had late onset disease

Predictive value of magnetic resonance imaging in outcomes of nonsurgical treatment of lateral epicondylitis.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis is typically made on the basis of clinical history and examination. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often used to supplement evaluation of the patient with a painful elbow and can identify extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon tears. The objective of this study was to determine if ECRB tear size on MRI could be used as a prognostic indicator for patients with recalcitrant lateral epicondylitis and partial ECRB tears. METHODS: Forty-one patients with recalcitrant lateral epicondylitis and a partial ECRB tear on MRI were ide

Functional magnetic resonance imaging activation for different vergence eye movement subtypes.

INTRODUCTION: Maddox suggested that there were four convergence subtypes, each driven by a different stimulus. The purpose of this study was to assess the neural correlates for accommodative convergence, proximal convergence (convergence stimulus provided), disparity convergence and voluntary convergence (no specific convergence stimulus provided) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Ten subjects (mean age = 24.4 years) with normal binocular vision participated. The blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signals of the brain from fMRI scans were measured when subject

Evaluation of Magnetic Resonance Findings of Circumventricular Organs in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Patients.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is the increased pressure with normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) composition, not due to a secondary cause. However, the need for lumbar puncture, an invasive method in diagnosis, leads to research on noninvasive diagnostic methods. This study aims to examine the role of the size of the pituitary gland and the previously unevaluated pineal gland in radiological diagnosis in patients with IIH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study retrospectively included 57 patients aged 18-80 years, who were followed up in our clinic with the diagnosis of IIH,

Differential symptom cluster responses to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment in depression.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can target specific neural circuits, which may allow for personalized treatment of depression. Treatment outcome is typically determined using sum scores from validated measurement scales; however, this may obscure differential improvements within distinct symptom domains. The objectives for this work were to determine: (1) whether a standard depression measure can be represented using a four symptom cluster model and (2) whether these symptom clusters had a differential response to rTMS treatment. METHODS: Data were obtained fro

Zoster neuritis of lumbar nerves: A clinical, magnetic resonance imaging, and electrodiagnostic evaluation.

Human herpesviruses, particularly the varicella-zoster virus, are notorious for affecting the central nervous system, especially when secondarily reactivated from a latent state. We present one such case of zoster radiculitis with an ensemble of typical dermatological and neurological features diagnosed on imaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies and encourage the consideration of viral (zoster) neuritis as a differential in patients presenting with radicular pain.

Magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities in encephalomyelitis due to paralytic rabies: A case report.

The diagnosis of rabies, a potentially fatal neuroinfectious disease, should be strongly considered in all patients who develop encephalitis following an infected animal bite even when they have received post-exposure prophylaxis. In the absence of confirmatory tests, typical magnetic resonance imaging findings help confirm the clinical diagnosis of rabies.
