Exercise and vitamin E intake are independently associated with metabolic abnormalities in human immunodeficiency virus-positive subjects: a cross-sectional study.

We investigated the relationship among habitual exercise, diet, and the presence of metabolic abnormalities (body fat redistribution, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance) in a cross-sectional study of 120 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected subjects with use of bivariate and multivariate regression-analysis models. Total and aerobic exercise were significantly and negatively associated with fasting plasma triglyceride levels in the entire sample and in the fat redistribution group. Inverse associations between total or aerobic exercise and insulin resistance were suggestive but did no

T-cell epitope prediction with combinatorial peptide libraries.

T cell receptors (TCR) recognize antigenic peptides in complex with the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules and this trimolecular interaction initiates antigen-specific signaling pathways in the responding T lymphocytes. For the study of autoimmune diseases and vaccine development, it is important to identify peptides (epitopes) that can stimulate a given TCR. The use of combinatorial peptide libraries has recently been introduced as a powerful tool for this purpose. A combinatorial library of n-mer peptides is a set of complex mixtures each characterized by one position fixed to

Latent structure of DSM-III-R Axis II psychopathology in a normal sample.

The Personality Disorder Examination was administered to 302 normal controls in the New York High-Risk Project in order to elicit Axis II diagnoses (revised 3rd edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) and quantitative dimensions of psychopathology. LISREL confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate the Axis II hypothesis of 3 orthogonal factors. There was considerable overlap among personality disorders. The best fitting LISREL model was of 3 oblique factors that were different for male and female subjects. Given that

Epidemiological comparisons of sudden infant death syndrome with infant apnoea.

A unique opportunity to study proven infant apnoea (PIA) and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) occurrences epidemiologically in 12 Counties in north-western Washington State during the same time period during which 180,017 live births were recorded revealed markedly dissimilar distribution patterns. The overall incidence of SIDS exceeded that of PIA by a factor of 3. Five PIA babies subsequently succumbed to SIDS. Statistical analysis reveals that these five events cannot be explained as random coincidences; they represent 3% of 163 PIA cases but only 1% of 503 SIDS occurrences. Infant apnoe

Family history of psychiatric disorders and the outcome of psychiatric patients with DSM-IV major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is often comorbid with other heritable disorders. The correlates of a family history (FH) of mood disorders but not of comorbid disorders among MDD patients have been investigated. Since bipolar disorder (BD) is highly heritable, latent BD may bias findings. METHODS: The Vantaa Depression Study included 269 psychiatric out- and in-patients with DSM-IV MDD, diagnosed with semistructured interviews and followed-up for 5 years with a life-chart. The FH of mood, psychotic disorders, and alcoholism among first-degree relatives of 183 patients was investi

Effect on adult height of pubertal growth hormone retesting and withdrawal of therapy in patients with previously diagnosed growth hormone deficiency.

CONTEXT: GH replacement therapy in GH-deficient (GHD) patients is usually continued until adult height despite the fact that most of these subjects display a normal secretion when retested at the end of growth. Puberty is the most likely time for normalization of GH secretion. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study are to establish the characteristics and the percentage of the subjects with isolated GHD who normalized secretion at puberty and to compare their statural outcomes with those of the subjects with persistent deficiency treated also after retesting. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a

Neurobehavioral performances and brain regional metabolism in Dab1(scm) (scrambler) mutant mice.

As disabled-1 (DAB1) protein acts downstream in the reelin signaling pathway modulating neuronal migration, glutamate neurotransmission, and cytoskeletal function, the disabled-1 gene mutation (scrambler or Dab1(scm) mutation) results in ataxic mice displaying dramatic neuroanatomical defects similar to those observed in the reeler gene (Reln) mutation. By comparison to non-ataxic controls, Dab1(scm) mutants showed severe motor coordination impairments on stationary beam, coat-hanger, and rotorod tests but were more active in the open-field. Dab1(scm) mutants were also less anxious in the elev

Modelling the geographical distribution of co-infection risk from single-disease surveys.

BACKGROUND: The need to deliver interventions targeting multiple diseases in a cost-effective manner calls for integrated disease control efforts. Consequently, maps are required that show where the risk of co-infection is particularly high. Co-infection risk is preferably estimated via Bayesian geostatistical multinomial modelling, using data from surveys screening for multiple infections simultaneously. However, only few surveys have collected this type of data. METHODS: Bayesian geostatistical shared component models (allowing for covariates, disease-specific and shared spatial and non-spa

Adherence to treatment in children with epilepsy: who follows "doctor's orders"?

PURPOSE: The goal of the present study was to examine sociocultural, medical, family environment, and individual cognitive factors that predict adherence to treatment in children with epilepsy. METHODS: The study subjects (4-13 years old) were enrolled in a longitudinal seizure study at the first visit to the seizure clinic, attended at least 6 months, and had at least two appointments. Baseline predictors, which were obtained by interview, chart review, and psychometric testing, included sociocultural and family environment, seizure and previous treatment history, child behavior, cognitive f

Flexible Bayesian inference on partially observed epidemics.

Individual-based models of contagious processes are useful for predicting epidemic trajectories and informing intervention strategies. In such models, the incorporation of contact network information can capture the non-randomness and heterogeneity of realistic contact dynamics. In this article, we consider Bayesian inference on the spreading parameters of an SIR contagion on a known, static network, where information regarding individual disease status is known only from a series of tests (positive or negative disease status). When the contagion model is complex or information such as infecti

Machine learning for detection of regional wall motion abnormalities on transthoracic echocardiography: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Regional wall motion abnormality (RWMA) assessment is fundamental in transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) for diagnosing ischaemic heart disease, yet visual interpretation is subjective and variable. Machine-learning (ML) models may offer a more objective and reproducible RWMA evaluation, but their diagnostic accuracy has not been comprehensively synthesized. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the diagnostic performance of ML algorithms for detecting RWMA on TTE. METHODS: PubMed (MEDLINE) and EMBASE were searched from inception to 7 December 2025 for studies applying ML to RWM

Gene interaction in DNA microarray data is decomposed by information geometric measure.

MOTIVATION: Given the vast amount of gene expression data, it is essential to develop a simple and reliable method of investigating the fine structure of gene interaction. We show how an information geometric measure achieves this. RESULTS: We introduce an information geometric measure of binary random vectors and show how this measure reveals the fine structure of gene interaction. In particular, we propose an iterative procedure by using this measure (called IPIG). The procedure finds higher-order dependencies which may underlie the interaction between two genes of interest. To demonstrate

Hyponatremia with intracranial malignant tumor resection in children.

OBJECT: Intracranial neoplasms are the second most common childhood cancer, and lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Hyponatremia is a complication associated with neurosurgical procedures, but children undergoing intracranial tumor resection have not been selectively studied. In this study, the authors aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors associated with hyponatremia among children undergoing intracranial neoplasm resection. METHODS: A retrospective cohort was compiled using the 2006 Kids' Inpatient Database to identify children younger than 21 years of age who underwent

The Relationship between VEGFC Gene Polymorphisms and Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), representative autoimmune diseases, mainly consist of Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). In this passage, we investigated the association between vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGFC) gene polymorphisms and AITDs. METHODS: A total of 1084 patients with AITDs and 794 healthy controls were tested for VEGFC gene genotypes in four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by high-throughput sequencing, and the correlation between VEGFC gene polymorphisms and AITDs was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The genotype distributi

Independent, joint, and temporal associations of social, intellectual, and physical leisure activities with cognitive decline in older Chinese adults: a longitudinal analysis from CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether engaging in different types of leisure activities leads to cognitive decline and whether participation in multidomains offers additional benefits among older Chinese adults. METHODS: We analyzed 6,847 participants aged ≥ 60 years from four waves (2011-2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, with a mean follow-up of 6.1 years. Leisure activities were categorized as social, intellectual, or physical. Linear mixed-effects models examined associations between baseline activity and cognitive change. Temporal dynamics of psychosocial risk and resilience pathways in adolescent depressive and anxiety symptoms: a three-wave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical neurodevelopmental stage marked by heightened sensitivity to psychosocial influences and increased risk for emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety. Although multiple psychosocial risk and protective factors have been identified, their interrelations and temporal patterning remain insufficiently understood, especially in Chinese populations. METHODS: We analyzed three-wave longitudinal data from 907 junior high school students in Northern China to examine associations among psychosocial stressors, contextual resources and mental health across ad
