In order to study the influence of repetitive episodes of ventricular fibrillation (VF) during defibrillator implantation on the electrical activity of the brain, we performed an electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring during implantation procedure in 18 patients. For defibrillation threshold testing 62 episodes of VF (1-6 episodes per patient) were induced. The mean duration of VF was 20 +/- 12 s; the mean duration of hypotension during an episode (defined as a mean arterial pressure of 50 mm Hg or less) was 33 +/- 16 s. In a series of 6 severely head injured patients, intraventricular as well as rectal, bladder and jugular vein temperature is recorded. The relationship between these temperatures in different conditions is evaluated. Intracerebral temperature is 0.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C (mean +/- SD) higher than bladder temperature except in conditions such as brain death. BACKGROUND: A late complication of pancreaticoduodenectomy is anastomotic ulcer, and the complication is lessened when pancreaticoduodenectomy is accompanied by preservation of the pylorus. The plethysmo time interval (PTI) is the time interval between the beginning of QRS complex on ECG and the upstroke of the pulse wave on the plethysmogram as measured by a pulse oximeter. We examined whether measuring the PTI has clinical value for evaluating neonatal peripheral circulation. Over a three-year period, 12 infants received dextrose/insulin infusions for severe hyperkalaemia from a mean age of 24 h. The infants were born after 24 to 26 weeks of gestation and weighed 730 +/- 172 g (mean +/- SD) at birth. The prevalence of periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) in a randomly selected elderly sample is reported. In San Diego, 427 elderly volunteers aged 65 yr and over were recorded in their homes. Fifty-five children had 64 external ventricular drains (EVDs) placed predominantly (95%) for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt infections. Infants presenting with pneumothorax within the first 24 hours of life were studied in an attempt to produce a reliable index of the severity of the disease. Findings are described in six patients with no clinical evidence of heart disease who had documented ventricular fibrillation (five patients) or ventricular flutter (one patient). Fifty patients with posttraumatic tibial nonunion complicated by chronic refractory osteomyelitis were treated with intravenous antibiotics.
