The unique phenomenology of sex-linked dystonia parkinsonism (XDP, DYT3, "Lubag").

Sex-linked dystonia parkinsonism (XDP, DYT3, "Lubag") is an adult-onset, progressive, debilitating movement disorder first described in Filipino males from Panay Islands in 1975. XDP manifests predominantly as torsion dystonia, later combined with or sometimes replaced with parkinsonism. Within the Island of Panay, the prevalence rate is highest in the province of Capiz, where 1:4000 men suffer from the disorder. There is a high degree of penetrance and generalization. While women often serve as carriers, XDP is not limited to men. An updated XDP Philippine registry (as of January 2010) has id

[Diagnosis and treatment of tics].

Tics are repetitive and sudden purposeless movements. Phenomenologically tics are differentiated as simple or complex, motor or vocal. Transient forms, which last less than 1 year, occur frequently in child hood. For Tourette syndrome, multiple simple and complex motor and vocal tics are present for more than one year. Frequently, additional symptoms of an obsessive-compulsive disorder or an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are present. There is no therapy for the cause of tics. For minor symptoms or if a transient tic disorder is suspected, the use of medications should be avoided. In

Ear-Worn Inertial Measurement of Sit-to-Stand and Sit-to-Walk Movements: Algorithm Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: Sit-to-stand and sit-to-walk are common functional movements that provide insight into an individual's functional mobility. Developing comprehensive measures of these movements using ear-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs), which are increasingly incorporated into widely used devices such as hearing aids and headphones, could provide a means of monitoring older adults and individuals with movement disorders with minimal additional burden. OBJECTIVE: This paper aimed to introduce comprehensive outcome measures for sit-to-stand and sit-to-walk movements based on data from ear-wor…

Quo vadis DSM-6? An expert survey on the classification, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis of body-focused repetitive behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Many conditions we now call body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) have been subject to research for several decades, most notably trichotillomania and skin picking. However, the American Psychiatric Association did not combine these conditions into a single category, body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBDs), until the fifth edition of the DSM (2013). Several aspects of the disorder remain uncertain and controversial. For example, ongoing debate surrounds which specific conditions fall under this diagnostic category and how to best differentiate BFRBs from conditions

Possible tics diagnosed as stereotypies in patients with severe autism spectrum disorder: a video-based evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The association of stereotypies and tics is not rare in children with severe autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The differential diagnosis between stereotypies and tics in this patient population can be difficult; however, it could be clinically relevant because of treatment implications. METHODS: A total of 108 video recordings of repetitive behaviors in young patients with stereotypies in the context of ASD were reviewed by a movement disorders expert and a trainee, in order to assess the prevalence of possible co-morbid tics. The Modified Rush Videotape Rating Scale (MRVS) was use…

Abnormal repetitive behaviors in zebrafish and their relevance to human brain disorders.

Abnormal repetitive behaviors (ARBs) are a prominent symptom of numerous human brain disorders and are commonly seen in rodent models as well. While rodent studies of ARBs continue to dominate the field, mounting evidence suggests that zebrafish (Danio rerio) also display ARB-like phenotypes and may therefore be a novel model organism for ARB research. In addition to clear practical research advantages as a model species, zebrafish share high genetic and physiological homology to humans and rodents, including multiple ARB-related genes and robust behaviors relevant to ARB. Here, we discuss a w

Abnormal repetitive behaviours: shared phenomenology and pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behaviour (SIB) is a devastating problem observed in individuals with various neurodevelopmental disorders, including specific genetic syndromes as well as idiopathic intellectual and developmental disability. Although an increased prevalence of SIB has been documented in specific genetic mutations, little is known about the neurobiological basis of SIB. This makes vulnerability assessment and pharmacological treatment incredibly challenging. METHOD: Here we review evidence that SIB and other repetitive, invariant behaviours, such as stereotypy, compulsions and tics

Hand movement span after mild traumatic brain injury: a longitudinal study.

This study examined whether memory span was impaired during the acute and post-acute phases following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Twenty-two adults with mTBI were compared with 22 controls on computerized tasks of immediate memory for verbal, spatial, and hand movement sequences under no interference (baseline) and articulatory suppression conditions. Groups were assessed within a month and followed up 3-12 months post-injury. In the acute phase, there were no group differences across tasks under either condition. At follow-up, all spatial and verbal span scores and associated practice

Ocular motility and visuo-spatial attention in children with periventricular leukomalacia.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is known to cause visual, motor, and cognitive impairments varying in their severity. Most studies focused on impairment at early ages. Little is known about the PVL's later outcome. Effects of neural plasticity are for instance insufficiently known to prognose precisely their behavioral outcome. It is even hard to determine the consequence of one defect on global development over time. Because of the established neural link between eye motion and space perception, 5-to-9 year-old PVL's were tested in visual detection, postural control, and space attention ta

The median preoptic nucleus is a key site for estradiol regulation of sleep-wake behaviors in females rats.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Women experience more sleep disruptions than men, particularly during hormonal transitions such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. This study investigated the role of estradiol (E2) in regulating sleep-wake behavior in female rats and identified the brain regions involved. METHODS: Using an exogenous E2 replacement model in ovariectomized rats, we assessed changes in sleep-wake patterns via electroencephalographic/electromyogram telemetry. The effects of E2 and progesterone, selective estrogen receptor agonists, and direct brain infusions of E2 and receptor antagonists we

Gene supplementation therapy restores motor deficits in Gnao1[C215Y] mice and proves broad efficacy in C. elegans model.

The heterotrimeric G proteins are ubiquitous membrane-bound complexes specialized in the transduction of receptor-mediated extracellular signals into intracellular responses. Mutations in the G protein subunit alpha O1 (Gαo), encoded by GNAO1, have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by prominent movement disorder with or without epilepsy. The Gnao1[C215Y]/+ mouse model recapitulates key features of the human disease, with a relatively mild phenotype, normal viability and late onset movement abnormalities, detectable in specific motor tasks. Here we report functiona

RETRACTED: Optimizing the impact of time domain segmentation techniques on upper limb EMG decoding using multimodal features.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Neurological disorders, such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, result in significant motor function impairments, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. To address the need for innovative and effective interventions, this study investigates the efficacy of electromyography (EMG) decoding in improving motor function outcomes. While existing literature has extensively explored classifier selection and feature set optimization, the choice of preprocessing technique, particularly time-domain windowing techniques, remains understudied posing a significant knowle

Quantitative assessment of dynamic movement reveals deficits due to hemiparetic stroke.

The absence of sensitive tools for quantifying movement dysfunction hinders our ability to study the underlying causes of motor impairments and makes it difficult to demonstrate the effectiveness of therapeutic approaches. Consequently, it slows down progress in developing novel treatment protocols, including personalized impairment-targeted interventions. While there exist well-established metrics of static and quasi-static motion, such as reaching range, little emphasis has been placed on quantifying dynamic response-controlled and timing-sensitive movements where the continuous modulation o

Effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation on balance, strength, cognition and ADL'S IN elderly - A randomized control study.

BACKGROUND: A common and significant worry for people in their later year falls. Falls are frequently caused by residual impairments, including decreasing strength, poor sensory processing, balance issues, and cognitive gait inadequacies. Deficits in movement and balance can persist for years and are associated with a high fall rate (>6 months). Neuromuscular re-education by proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation involves stimulating sensory receptors to provide feedback on incorrect movement and posture. OBJECTIVE: To Identify the effects of PNF on Balance, Strength, cognition and ADL. M

Dynamic Digital Radiography in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Visualizing Diaphragm Motility Impairment and Its Influence on Clinical Management.

A 40-year-old woman with a known diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) began experiencing progressive shortness of breath and reduced exercise tolerance following her second pregnancy. The patient underwent an unenhanced computed tomography (CT) scan that showed a marked elevation of the left diaphragm. Suspecting diaphragm dysfunction, the patient underwent Dynamic Digital Radiography (DDR) that confirmed a reduction in left diaphragm motility, indicative of impaired diaphragm function. Based on the DDR findings, which demonstrated reduced but preserved diaphragmatic motion without parado
