BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells can be differentiated into muscle satellite cells. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) promotes the differentiation of satellite cells into muscle cells.
CASE REPORT: A 31-year-old male with a T4 complete chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) had fixation for a mid-shaft fracture of the left femur. The participant received transdermal testosterone patches (4 mg/day) daily for 16 weeks. Skeletal muscle and yellow bone marrow adiposity cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of both thighs were measured using magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Motor unit recruitment order and firing rate was investigated in healthy subjects, and in small numbers of patients 50years ago. We aimed to investigate firing rate in different disorders, testing the same target muscle with normal strength, to evaluate possible application in diagnosing upper motor neuron (UMN) lesion.
METHODS: We studied motor unit firing in the tibialis anterior muscle in six groups of subjects; normal subjects (n=45), patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (n=36), primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) (n=21), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) (n=14), vari

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional imaging study of young adults.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether severity of low back symptoms predicts atrophy in the paraspinal muscles of young adults.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although an increased fat content of the lumbar muscles has been observed among adults with chronic LBP, there is limited knowledge of this association in younger populations.
METHODS: The population-based study sample consisted of 554 subjects (321 females and 233 males) from the 1986 Northern Finland Birth Cohort. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was used to cluster the subjects accord

Following spinal cord injury, the expiratory muscles develop significant disuse atrophy characterized by reductions in their weight, fiber cross-sectional area, and force-generating capacity. We determined the extent to which these physiological alterations can be prevented with electrical stimulation. Because a critical function of the expiratory muscles is cough generation, an important goal was the maintenance of maximal force production. In a cat model of spinal cord injury, short periods of high-frequency lower thoracic electrical spinal cord stimulation (SCS) at the T(10) level (50 Hz, 1

We report the first case of a pregnant woman presenting with a paradoxical air embolism due to accidental removal of a central venous catheter. Secondary right hemiplegia associated with a confused state justified emergency hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which was followed by complete neurological recovery. The aim of this case report is to assess risk situations of gas embolism during pregnancy and puerperium, as well as indications and fetal effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Clinicopathological findings in X-linked recessive bulbospinal neuronopathy were characterized by loss of myelinated fibers in the fasciculus gracilis and depletion of neurons in the ventral horn throughout the same segments. Clinical profile of this rare motor neuron disease include sign and symptom of lower motor neuron involving bulbar and spinal level with minimal or no sensory deficit. Previous electrodiagnostic findings consist of electrophysiological evidence of anterior horn cell disease and decreased or absent sensory action potentials in the peripheral nerve. The role of somatosensor

Based on an analysis of potentials of motor units (MU) of the skeletal muscles of patients with the postpoliomyelitis syndrome (PPMS), tick-borne encephalitis and spinal amyotrophy, a conclusion is made about the common trend of changes in MU in the given diseases. The degree of changes in MU depends on the grade of physical and trophic load of the preserved nerve elements. As the reserve possibilities of motoneurons are depleted, the process gets aggravated, with the formation of compensatory innervation insufficiency and the rise of muscle atrophy. In patients with PPMS, the decompensation o

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease results in pes cavus or equinocavovarus deformity. An accepted surgical correction is triple arthrodesis of the foot. In a retrospective study of 45 Charcot-Marie-Tooth patients, two cases developed neuropathic ankle joint after triple arthrodesis. This procedure prevents mobility of the tarsal joint and consequently increases stress on the ankle joint. If coupled with decreased joint sensation, it may predispose the ankle to neuroarthropathy. This paper emphasizes joint position sense as an important consideration before triple arthrodesis or any other surgical pro

SMA is a genetically determined motor system disorder that results in muscle weakness, selective motor neuron death, muscle atrophy, and impaired functional mobility. In SMA model systems, long-term treatment with 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) has been shown to improve motor function. To assess tolerability and preliminary efficacy of 4-AP on walking ability, endurance and EMG in adult ambulatory SMA patients, we conducted a double blind, placebo control, crossover pilot study with dalfampridine (4-AP, 10 mg BID). The study is comprised of a short-term (2 weeks) treatment arm with 1-week washout and

The high level of complexity underlying the heterogeneous pathophysiology of neuromuscular diseases is a fundamental limiting factor in understanding the role of physical activity in their onset and/or clinical evolution. To overcome this difficulty, it is essential to rely on and deep knowledge of the aetiology and on the physiological adaptations to physical exercise, in order to predict how they can impact on the clinical history of each disease. This paper illustrates the possible strategies of intervention in some neuromuscular disorders, through the analysis of their supposed pathogenic

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal, neurodegenerative disorder caused by the degeneration of motor neurons in the CNS, which results in complete paralysis of skeletal muscles. Recent experimental studies have suggested that the disease could initiate in skeletal muscle, rather than in the motor neurons. To establish the timeframe of motor neuron degeneration in relation to muscle atrophy in motor neuron disease, we have used MRI to monitor changes throughout disease in brain and skeletal muscle of G93A-SOD1 mice, a purported model of ALS. Longitudinal MRI examination o

Poliomyelitis, though eradicated from most parts of the world, continues to occur in India. There is paucity of data on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes in poliomyelitis. We report a 3(1/2)-year-old boy who presented with subacute onset flaccid paralysis and altered sensorium. Stool culture was positive for wild polio virus type 3. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed signal changes in bilateral substantia nigra and anterior horns of the spinal cord. These MRI changes may be of potential diagnostic significance in a child with poliomyelitis.

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) play a key role in homeostasis of protein acetylation in histones and other proteins and in regulating fundamental cellular activities such as transcription. A wide range of brain disorders are associated with imbalances in protein acetylation levels and transcriptional dysfunctions. Treatment with various HDAC inhibitors can correct these deficiencies and has emerged as a promising new strategy for therapeutic intervention in neurodegenerative disease. Here, we review and discuss intriguing recent developments in the use of HDAC inhibitors to combat neurodegenerat
